Just wanted to see who the esteemed folk of the sumo forum think is going to put a stop to this Mongolian machine we call Terunofuji, or at least put the brakes on him for a day.

I'm sure that if you comment your reasoning below we can figure this one out before he zensho's his way into retirement (Sadgoodbyes...)

(To take it a little more seriously, @RabidJohn said he was surprised we don't already have a poll up for this, so here it is.)

It looks like the poll cut off some options but surely nobody wanted to vote for Kotoeko or Oho so it doesn't matter, right?

(if you did, terribly sorry, please just comment it instead)

Even if he doesn't look great so far, Takakeisho might do it.

Of course I pick a guy and few hours later he goes kyujo....

Well, I already know I picked wrong...

He's given Terunofuji a fair bit of trouble twice now. If he can stay up where he keeps getting opportunities, I reckon Ura will eventually get a kinboshi from the big fella.

Well, Teru certainly isn't looking unbeatable but who can actually pull it off remains a mystery. Mitakeumi and Meisei are probably both smart bets, but personally I'd be thinking someone with an explosive start and long thrusts would be his weakness. Gotta avoid the clamp.

if the right Ichinojo shows up tonight he could. But I think it will likely be Abi. Terunofuji handled Ura poorly . Ura almost pushed him out and Abi is a way better pusher than Ura.

Ura got both arms inside doing crouching Ura sumo, was holding onto Teru, and would've won by yorikiri there if anything. Very different from Abi's style.

Though I would say Abi has a better shot than many on the list of beating Teru. When would an M6 be facing him in this basho?

Onosho and Endo have done relatively well against Teru in the past, they could be worth a bet too. I chose Meisei because I think with his strong technique he is likely to at least get himself into a good position, and he's done that several times vs Teru. Finishing is another matter, but he did beat him recently.....so go Meisei.

Would be nice if Terunofuji was to break that one record Hakuho always coveted but never achieved.

Abi is not within the top 15 opponents available for Terunofuji (only those among Endo/Daieisho and Okinoumi/Hokutofuji who did not face Takakeisho).  The earliest Terunofuji's last normal maegashira match would be is Day 11*, scheduled after Day 9, and I would guess if Abi is at least 8-1 he'll face Terunofuji instead of Hoshoryu, but that's partly predicated on Hoshoryu not doing similarly well.  They might skip Chiyoshoma instead, but that would have to be obvious another day in advance.  It's possible that they skip Terunofuji's match with, say, Takanosho or Meisei instead if by the time those were scheduled the aite was clearly not going to be in sanyaku next basho.  Skipping Shodai seems unlikely since that would be the last match, while skipping Mitakeumi would only be reasonable if the latter were to implode starting today.

Thus, it's reasonable to think that Abi will not face Terunofuji this tournament, and if I were betting on Abi to break the streak, I'd almost be betting on a Terunofuji zensho this basho.

*It's possible they schedule Meisei someday earlier than Day 12 and/or Mitakeumi before Day 13 because of the one-per-day intrasanyaku bout schedule going forward, which would put the last maegashira match off until later.

I could just change my post above, but it's been awhile since I made it.  I did it from memory at work and there's a lot of things that are off since I didn't have my spreadsheet to make it easier to see how the matches will shake out, but the basic idea is the same: there's a very good chance that Abi will not face Terunofuji this basho.  There's one more maegashira in the gap (so Abi is #17 on Terunofuji's list, not #16), and Terunofuji's last maegashira match is at earliest Day 12.  I don't know whether this makes it harder or easier.  It will depend on how Abi does and a small bit on Hoshoryu and Chiyoshoma do.  Okinoumi is too early to be skipped despite his 0-5 now, Hokutofuji should likewise not be in a bad enough of a hole by the time his match is scheduled, and Onosho is doing well so probably won't be skipped even if he loses his next few.

I don't think Hoshoryu is a real chance of fighting Teru this time round, but I think if Abi maintains a top 3 presence in the standings then the association will find a way to include him in the Yokozuna's schedule in the last third. They skipped opponents so he could fight Ura for ratings before from the same rank, why not skip now so the most dangerous-looking opponent can take a shot?

Well yes, I did click that option. Looks like that was the correct choice.
