Nishonoseki (Kisenosato) activities

Hanafusa has been given a shikona for the next tournament.

Hananoumi (花の海 - はなのうみ), not following the apparent trend of using -nosato that could have started with Onosato. Probably Nishonoseki doesn't really like shikona traditions then? 

Edit: Actually, I think the Umi part comes from his first name Kai (海).

I'm still pretty clueless about naming conventions. Some, like Kononoe and Sadogatake, make it easy to understand; others seem opaque to me.

Does he get maybe more options having that ichimon head kabu, or can he just do whatever he likes?

I always got the idea that the oyakata can do whatever he likes, but if you are simply picking up a spot from a deceased or retired stablemaster, you probably feel forced to keep the old traditions of the stable, but at a new stable? I think there is no code of conduct for oyakata for that, lets put it that way.

Another one! Nishonoseki is on a rampage.

Rinko becomes... Rinko. First kanji change, from 林 to 麟, same sound but the second comes from the fantastical creature Kirin (麒麟). Kirinryu (麒麟龍) is from the same stable.

NOW I think the trend seems to be the same as the old legendary Nishonoseki stable (the one that closed in 2013) that fairly regularly used real and mythological animals' kanji in shikona, I think this was even said by Nishonoseki himself on a twitter post quite some time ago iirc.

Maybe he is gonna keep the -nosato suffixes for super strong recruitees/makuuchi debutants?

I think it's too soon to place a particular pattern of shikona changes in Nishonoseki-beya, not only is the heya itself still young but a significant chunk are survivors from Oguruma-beya. Two of those received shikona with Nishonoseki links, either historical (Kirinryu) or to the current shisho (Wakenosato), while the others Aron and Ryuo are more ambiguous. Among the direct Nishonoseki recruits, Soseizan's middle kanji is from the shisho too.

Nishida will make his Makushita debut on the new banzuke, I wonder if he'll get a shikona to mark that promotion.

Aaaaand another one! 

Juryo Takahashi is going to be known as Shirokuma (白熊 - しろくま), Polar Bear. Nishonoseki explains that he is training him to do similar sumo to the late ozeki Hokutenyu, who was known as the Polar Bear of Hokkaido, thus the origin of the shikona.

The animal shikona trend seems to continue.

Yes, but Rinko has the kanji for the -rin in Kirin, a mythological beast and the kanji for Tiger. Hayashiryu has 'Dragon', Kirinryu has Kirin and Dragon, Ryuo etc.

Nishonoseki seems to want to continue the old Nishonoseki's tradition is what I was pointing at.

I thought I'd point out that when I was learning kanji, the one on the right had the description "bear".  It was a bit before I determined which English word "bear" was meant.  In contrast, I think there was another animal kanji where there's also a common English homonym (maybe "swallow"?), and they included (animal) to be clear.  But not on this one, so I assumed that it *wasn't* the animal, and was wrong.
