Nishonoseki (Kisenosato) activities

Recommended Posts

Since Otokonoyama had taken over my thread, I cannot change the title anymore, so I post a new one

On 11/09/2020 at 14:27, Akinomaki said:

Araiso gets his own weekly radio program, on Mondays 19-19:15h JST, except during the basho. Start on October 5th, at the Nagoya based station Tokai Radio www.tokairadio.co.jp: "Araiso-oyakata yokozuna life-way 人生道"

With a corner "Ask Araiso-oyakata" and presenting his favorite "yokozuna-life cheering songs" from his active day.

The new episode that appeared on the net today announced the name change also of the program (and the channel)

He used words like for Y/O promotion: "Not defiling the name of Nishonoseki, properly devoting myself, properly preserving tradition .."

He got the Araiso kabu already at age 19, at the moment he sees it just as a name change, he can't tell about the future.

Nishonoseki told recently on radio that construction for the proper new, now from the start Nishonoseki-beya, is planned to be complete end of May, at least for the Aki basho the heya will do the preparations there. The temporary heya is at a Tsukuba university location. o

At the construction site mid December in Ami town, Arakawa-Hongo, adjacent to Ushiku, his hometown: o

The temporary heya is at Tsukuba university, the proper one is a 10 minutes walk away from JR Hitachino-Ushiku station (elsewhere it's said 5 minutes), with 2 dohyo under construction. Construction is going on and Ami town wants to use it as PR to become a sumo town, Nishonoseki cooperates of course. The town made an advisory contract with Kazuki Maeda (Daikamikaze), heya manager since February, and has 5.84 million yen in the budget this year for the cooperation, with members of each town department working out plans for the cooperation: trips to the heya as a sightseeing spot etc. The town has a "Nishonoseki's heya" corner on their site https://www.town.ami.lg.jp/promotion/category/12-5-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0.html

The official homepage of the heya has a 3rd heya address as part of Ushiku city, in Hitachino-Higashi, just next to Arakawa Hongo

You might mean "temporary".  I was jarred by the first sentence, as it suggests that this heya is merely "of the world" (temporal), while his real heya is in heaven ... no, wait, it's near Ushiku.  I know that his fans really, really like him, but maybe that's a little too much.

I'm losing my language abilities, get careless - that can happen when you turn my age

The town publication for March on the heya already lists the 4 new recruits and a new tokoyama, the heya page not yet

Edit: the tokoyoma is fittingly 床二, Ni from Nishonoseki, not yet on the NSK page, so the reading may not be Tokoni

Well, it's certainly working; considering Nishonoseki-beya is almost guaranteed to be up by the time Japan allows tourists back in, it's definitely going to be on my to-visit list when I can go to Japan again.

Nishonoseki on the 16th in Yachiyo was appointed cheerleader of the PR project for the keisui nashi pear, Ibaraki local produce. A PR video was recorded, to be published on the net. http://ibarakinews.jp/news/newsdetail.php?f_jun=16553854963096 16553854963096_photo1_001.jpg

Nishonoseki with Nakamura had a talk-show in Ami town yesterday, talking about the support by the citizens of Ibaraki that made him reach yokozuna, showing pictures from inside the heya etc. There was space for 250 people in the venue, about 15 times as many had applied for those places. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/06/19/kiji/20220619s00005000114000c.html

Nishonoseki also seems to be building a sideline as a sumo commentator; he had a guest appearance on a sumo program before the basho, and now he was invited to contribute a piece to Sponichi:

Nishonoseki's column in Sponichi for the Nagoya basho as a regular invited contributor (see Akinomaki's clarification below):

Not sure whether this is a one-off or going to be a regular column.

He's doing it for a long time now

Araiso-oyakata from the Haru-basho on will start as sports commentator for the Sponichi paper, joining Tamanoi-oyakata.

At a visit to the Sponichi headquarters today, ex-Kise declared that he plans to adopt American football NFL training methods to rear his (future) deshi. His plans for after the danpatsu-shiki end of September: "The NFL uses the latest training methods. I'd like to go to learn." "Sumo builds the body with keiko, but the built of the Japanese has become like the people from overseas, so we should be able to use these methods in sumo as well."

He's feeling good: "My condition is terrific. With the stress having disappeared, my body feels light."

Thanks. Should have checked the old Araiso-oyakata thread...

Nishonoseki is really fond of talk shows: he had another on the 2nd in Naka, Ibaraki, in front of about 250 people. To questions he told that while active he ate 100 plates at the kaiten sushi with ease and that he did 40 minutes of stretching each morning to prevent injuries (apparently that was not enough).  http://ibarakinews.jp/news/newsdetail.php?f_jun=16599575045727

Wow. I hope that's while he was active (because of the reference to stretching).

Both eating and stretching while he was active - those questions are always about the active time for at least the first 10 years as oyakata

Until his fateful injury the stretching seemed to work though -- iirc Kisenosato was almost never injured.

That was the painful irony of it. He was an ironman and always resistant to injury, then his very first yokozuna tournament he suffers a debilitating one.

At least he still got a yokozuna yusho though. That basho was quite something, all that drama near the end with the injury, the Teru henka, and the Kise comeback on day 15.

Nishonoseki invited 6 students from Todai to the heya for a sumo experience stay - only to watch keiko. Most of them never visited a sumo-beya before. It was part of a project at Todai to have students widen their field of vision -  this event likely was inspired by Suyama joining the sumo world.

Someone ought to have a chat with Nishonoseki's barber. The Kim Jong Un cut isn't exactly in vogue these days.
