He was an ironman and always resistant to injury, then his very first yokozuna tournament he suffers a debilitating one. At least he still got a yokozuna yusho though. That basho was quite something, all that drama near the end with the injury, the Teru henka, and the Kise comeback on day 15. That... was the basho that got me hooked on regular sumo watching. I was staying somewhat close to his heya some weeks ago, too bad no chance to visit it. Maybe next time...

Akinomaki 40,814 Posted August 27, 2022 Waseda today in front of about 1000, including those watching online (only for Waseda apparently). Nishonoseki wants to have some kind of Kisenosato cup in Ibaraki pref., in Ami town where the heya is. A national wampaku tournament to find the best kids in Japan, of course he wants to have a pool of future prospects for his heya, like Miyagino has with the Hakuho cup. At this the latest of his regular talk events he also mentioned plans to support the making of a dohyo at schools all over the country, which the NSK regularly does. Asked for his goal as a shisho he said he wants to bring all of his deshi to sekitori, and make some of them into y/o. https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2022/08/27/kiji/20220827s00005000516000c.html

Among the highlights: A basketball court on the grounds of the heya so the rikishi can stay active and have fun moving around even after training His strong belief that developing a powerful lower-body foundation through the fundamentals (shiko, suriashi, etc.), which he realized was essential after stopping Hakuho's winning match streak having withstood his opponent's fierce attack His shisho, ex-Yokozuna Naruto Oyakata, was developed by another ex-Yokozuna, Wakanohana; so there's pressure on him to keep the tradition alive of Yokozuna developing Yokozuna His shisho and his shisho's shisho were ultra-strict, but Nishonoseki Oyakata seems to be taking a kinder approach; lavishing praise when his rikishi improve and making sure to talk with them directly every day to boost their confidence and self-belief He makes extensive use of video feedback; his reasoning being that his young deshi have grown up on YouTube and that's how they learn When his deshi Nishihara suffered a knee injury, he drove him himself to a hospital specializing in the injury 180 kilometers away He feels the added pressure of adopting the Nishonoseki name; but the pressure will drive him to focus and work harder He was determined to defy convention and open his heya in his home prefecture of Ibaraki--far from Tokyo--after the hometown reception he received at his yusho parade His dream is to give birth to homegrown Ozeki and/or Yokozuna from Ibaraki Edited August 30, 2022 by Kaninoyama 6

Seiyashi 4,108 Posted September 8, 2022 This is probably a very spicy joke for multiple reasons, but good thing they didn't get Kasugano to do the PR or it'd have sounded like a BDSM commercial. "I love the bend in this shaft as it curves around a rikishi's back..." Not that I think he'll go down that road ever, but this CM is also going to be harsher in hindsight if Nishonoseki ever gets hauled up for anything hazing-related.
Kaninoyama 1,818 Posted September 8, 2022 Golf Video Highlights: Nishonoseki says he averages around 82 per round. He generates a driver ball speed right around Japanese pro tour average. He cranked a few launch monitor drives over 280 yards. He's excited at the prospect of his new set of custom clubs enabling him to break 80 consistently.
