Preparations of the masses- Kyushu 2019

Recommended Posts

Mitakeumi went for degeiko to Kasugano, where he faced Tochinoshin and others for 14 bouts. "What? That many? I may have overdone that.." he quipped. It was his first moshi-ai since entering Fukuoka. "Good start. I hope to continue this.." he summed.

Sekiwake Tochinoshin was looking good at training today, facing visiting Mitakeumi and others going 9-6 and even tsuridashi'd Mitakeumi. It was a warm sunny day today, which is good news for his battered body. "This kind of day is good. My body is moving well. I just hope my knee  gambarizes during the basho," he said. He is facing a second return to Ozeki, the first since ex-Tochiazuma. "I'm feeling OK. The pressure on me to win is stronger when I'm Ozeki. I feel I will be able to go all out this time!!" he proclaimed.

Some more news on Tochinoshin and Mitakeumi courtesy of Chris Gould in this video. Tochinoshin 10-4 on friday against his stablemates (Aoiyama and Tochiozan probably) and looking good. He apparently lost 10 kg since last tournament.

Mitakeumi felt disconfort on his left knee ( that he injured earlier this year ) so rested for the past few days.

I wonder if Tochinoshin and Takayasu will trade places this time. There seems to be a ‘one in, one out’ Ozeki door policy at the moment.

It might happen.  Tochinoshin's probably in the best health he's been in since Tamawashi hurt his big toe, and Takayasu's elbow just isn't healed enough.  If Tochinoshin can get eight wins by day 10, I think he'll do it.  I don't see Takayasu doing better than 8-7.

Hopefully they both achieve their goals, but both are quite uncertain.  Especially because there's a lot of talent in the rare four komusubi slots and in maegashira 1-6 this time around.  If Takakeisho doesn't compete or pulls out, their chances look much better imo.  Doubly so if Mitakeumi and one of the yokozuna also go kyujo partway through.

M12e Ichinojo is heading for juryo - his back pain has become more severe and kyujo for Kyushu is imminent. He had  continued  rehabilitation in Tokyo so far,  but still is in no condition to train. He'll arrive in Fukuoka on the 4th and continue with rehabilitation there. The weight  of 224kg was the main cause of the problem - he's down to 190kg now. Severe back pain started 3 years ago, and this time he wants to devote himself to recuperation, though entering later is still under consideration.

Minato-oyakata:"We'll look at his condition and decide. I don't want him to act unreasonable. A powerful rikishi will certainly make it back to makuuchi, once properly cured."

That's a heck of a drop. I'd prefer to see Ichinojo focus on losing fat, gaining muscle and strengthening his lower back and core (amateur hour here, ignore my rubbish assessment, please). Better to sit out, rehab and go to juryo and still get paid, than to try and compete and potentially suffer a career-ending injury. He's got plenty of years left in him, so looking after his back now will really help.

An Ichinojo who has been suffering ever-increasing pain makes so much sense given how his attitude has seemed at times.

Here's hoping he rests, heals up, and we see only the beast in his future!

Sekiwake Mitakeumi, Sekiwake Tochinoshin and his stablemates Aoiyama and juryo Tochiozan as well as Komusubi Asanoyama all trained together today with just less than one week to go before the start of the basho.

Mitakeumi fought 12 bouts and was 3-9. Still, he didn't seem too worried about the result insisting that the point of focus was the number of bouts rather than the win rate. He wants to be more careful with the way he manages his body at this period of the year because the temperature changes are difficult to adapt to and he failed many times in the past.

Tochinoshin continues to look good, he was 10-4, 4-1 against his "nemesis" and fellow yotsu specialist Asanoyama. "My knee is better and it's been a while since I last felt this good" he told the press.

Shin Komusubi Asanoyama was just 2-8 "I'm so weak !" he was heard saying disapointed with himself. He apparently trained a lot this past few days and looked tired. He was just 1-4 against Tochinoshin but looked good in that win " This is the kind of sumo I want to produce. Overall I couldn't do my own sumo today, I need to identify the things I need to solve" he commented. One of the things he wants to improve is his Tachi-ai, he thinks his chin and jawline are too high.

Some news on Komusubi Abi who was 7-4 against sekitori opposition today but lost 9 straight times to Hakuhô to finish 7-13. "When I was able to extend my arms I could really push well. I could learn a lot from this session" he explained. Mitakeumi and Asanoyama are currently leading the race to get the most wins this year but Abi said he is aiming at that record as well " To get more wins than Mitakeumi and Asanoyama I have no choice but to get the yusho right ?" declared a fired up Abi. The race is on. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201911040000597.html

Abi is co-leader - nobody of the 23 here who voted so far believes Abi will get to most wins in the end

Asanoyama can aim for most wins of the year - he has 44 wins now and is 1 win behind the leaders Mitakeumi and Abi. So another year with below 60 wins for the winner of this award is practically guaranteed, but who will it be? And will he dig under the record of Hakuho, who holds both that for top and bottom there with 86 and 56 ?

The list of the top 8 plus the 2 with the best outside chance looks like we're in for a whole new sumo era in the new era. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&columns=6&n_basho=6&sum_wins=38&sum_range=6&show_sum=on&form1_year=2019&form1_month=1&form1_m=on&sort_by=sum_wins

Thank you so much for correcting my mistake ! I looked at the article and the sentence says exactly that, I messed up aha (今年45勝は御嶽海と並ぶトップで、小結朝乃山を1差リード)

It makes perfect sense since he is in the race as well !

Why does that list have Kakuryu at 41 wins and further down at 39 wins (which omits January)?

Are there any recent pictures of him with this weight loss? I'm sure that losing some weights is good for his body in the long term but 75 pounds in 2 months is insane!

Because the DB now has included the Kyushu basho and the search results have changed with that - I need to modify the query to get the same result as before

I notice the plasters (Band-aids) have returned on Tochinoshin’s arse. Hmm.

I seriously doubt he's suffering from bad ass-ne or sitting down on glass-shard cushions.

This might signal the return of pink Tochinoshin, the Georgian Majin Buu.

Ura will be back for Kyushu, restarting from jd106, after 5 basho: "I only prepared" - during the long rehabilitation he trained his muscles - upper and lower body. He resumed keiko end of October in Fukuoka, and also this day he did 20 bouts. Already 2 times he had surgery - there mustn't be a 3rd time, thus his focus is to do sumo "So there's no injury" https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/11/06/0012852196.shtml

The possibility of Ichinojo going kyujo has gone higher now. 'He hasn't been doing keiko. Right now the situation is resting is best for him' explained Minato Oyakata.

In the last basho Ichinojo hurt his right shoulder and went kyujo. After that, he got the deep pain in his lower back it was said by somebody. He arrived in Fukuoka on the 4th (as planned), but was leaning on his tsukebito's shoulder to walk around. Going completely kyujo is a certain drop into Juryo. 'Can't be in a hurry. Important to completely heal' Minato Oyakata added.

Mitakeumi and Enho were on some talkshow in Fukuoka city. The host asked Mitakeumi about the possibility of Ozeki promotion with good results this basho. 'You could say that's becoming my goal' he responded with a bit of fire in his eyes. Enho said 'Its a bit cold in Kyushu but I hope for a hot basho', somehow enthusiastically.

They were then queried about their thoughts on marriage. 'Cooking is important' said Mitakeumi wishing for a lady excelling at home cooking. Enho added on top of being a good cook she must 'be reliable at managing the finances'

Terunofuji declared he wants to be back in makuuchi before the Olympics.Today he went with the heya's sekitori  for degeiko to  Tokitsukaze-beya. The now ms10 did 6 bouts in a row with Yutakayama, Shodai, Nishikigi and juryo Azumaryu and won them all, a break and then 4 more wins in a row. He needs a 7-0 (makushita yusho) to get back to juryo for next basho. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201911060000424.html
