Shimekomi - silk mawashi news

Recommended Posts

Since we just had another discussion about mawashi never washed and lately 2nd hand shimekomi (the silk mawashi for the basho used by sekitori) are in the news, I make a thread not just for new shimekomi - unlike kesho mawashi, the only thing to tell about them is the color - and the donor.

Tochinoshin presently wears the last mawashi used by his oyakata, he had a very worn out black one before.

he showed for the first time his new shimekomi for the basho: aubergine deep blue, the color the shisho had preferred as Tochinowaka - and he got it as a present from Kasugano-oyakata, his 3rd shimekomi mawashi overall

it wasn't just the same color that the shisho loved when active as Tochinowaka - it IS the old shimekomi the shisho used in his last days.

This basho Akua uses the shimekomi of ani-deshi Rikishin, who had his career cut short by repeated injuries: lime green, and never used by Rikishin, so it is actually a brand new one.

Kisenosato today did keiko with a (quite) new purplish red shimekomi, he first used at Harumafuji's danpatsushiki.

Kisenosato used to wear that colour years ago. His Wikipedia page has a pic from 2009 of him in a purple/red mawashi.

His first shimekomi he got from his first shisho (Takanosato) for juryo promotion Natsu 2004 was dark red, this new purplish/wine red is his 2nd in that colour - back to the roots? http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20181229-OHT1T50160.html

Still Hagiwara then

He used it till Nagoya 2014

MItekeumi for the new era gets a new 3rd silk shimekomi, from 12 fan supporters, mainly Agematsu locals and from Tokyo. He selected the color himself: bright light tea brown - so far he got one purplish red and one in indigo color. Length 9m and width 80cm approximately, with 15 sagari, to wish for 15 safe, injury-free days at the basho. He'll put it on at asa-geiko to make it fit and get used to it. http://www.shinmai.co.jp/news/nagano/20190429/KT190427SFI090008000.php

the Kyoto artisan started with the sagari part, the weaving of the main part  will begin with the start of the new era

Mitakeumi uses again the kaki-fruit colored shimekomi he first used at the Natsu-basho - after continued losses he had changed back to the old one mid way - light purple is the usual for him, but now he says he's grown accustomed to the one with maybe bad luck. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/11/09/0012862046.shtml

The "3 Onami Brothers" local Fukushima koenkai presented Wakatakakage with a new shimekomi. The koenkai top two were at Arashio-beya today. https://www.minpo.jp/news/moredetail/2021101591212

Unfortunately the mawashi in the box has no colour information attached, hopefully later articles will mention it and show WKTKKG breaking it in. Else we'll have to wait for the basho to start.

A new silver shimekomi this basho for Atamifuji from the Atami koenkai, Homarefuji and Harumafuji had used that color. Since new juryo a year ago he wanted red or silver for the shimekomi, after red now silver for his 2nd one.

After having used a silver shimekomi from Nagoya till last basho, Wakatakakage today was training in the blue one again he used when he got his first yusho - which one he'll use this basho is not decided yet - maybe both

The colour suits him. Wonder if the holdup is due to the bottleneck on shimekomi production, although there were only 3 shin jūryō this time.

well, Hoshoryu also got a new dark-blue shimekomi, and Meisei is fighting in a black one, which I am not sure if I have seen before, so it might be new as well?

Onosato - and Takahashi as well - first time in the white keiko mawashi of a sekitori

he showed his deep blue new shimekomi, the colour suggested by the shisho, but also that of Kaiyo high and Nittaidai

Onosato's ocean blue shimekomi o

Takahashi also new blue o - kachikaeshi, traditional kimono colour- a blue deeper than dark brown so-bien.com/kimono/色/褐返

Asakoryu - the crimson dragon of the morning showed his muscles and his new deep green - not red - shimekomi "I thought I make it a red one, but everybody expected it to be red, so I purposely went for a green one." https://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2023/09/08/kiji/20230908s00005000356000c.html

New makuuchi Shimazuumi has a new dark green shimekomi, like former shisho Wakashimazu, from whom he received part of the shikona - both are from Tanegashima: "I wanted to change to the shisho's trademark green when I make it to makuuchi." o
