Kintamayama 47,184 Posted December 2, 2017 Hatsu basho tickets have gone on sale today, amid worries of the Harumafuji affair and how it may influence it.
rhyen 1,858 Posted December 2, 2017 Sellout, because Kisenosato is still on the banzuke. 1
Rocks 1,810 Posted December 2, 2017 I doubt Harumafuji's affair and intai will effect anything much. I doubt the affair will hurt sumo because I think your average Japanese fan will put most of the blame on Harumafuji and not sumo in general. His retiring quickly will take care of that. Now, had Harumafuji been super popular it might be a different story. Harumafuji was great, and good for sumo, but he didn't bring fans into the sport who would not have been otherwise. At least not on a significant scale. The absence of a Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods effects so much because there are millions upon millions who had no real interest in the sport but followed because of them. Now had Harumafuji fought this and Hakuho had "let the pus out" it may have hurt sumo badly. But it would have been pointless because Harumafuji did what he was accused of doing for the most part. Harumafuji's loss will hurt some in the long run though as he was the only Yokozuna who is actually personable and good at PR IMHO. He was great on the tv shows, etc. Hakuho is the greatest ever but he is not good with publicity or PR IMO. Kakuryu is even worse. Kisenosato isn't much better but being Japanese his only real requirement is to show up.
Kaninoyama 1,879 Posted December 3, 2017 Not sure if it was due to any ill effects of the Harumafuji scandal, but was able to score two front-section tickets for Day 7 through the telephone lottery system. First time ever succeeding after many failed attempts trying.
Kintamayama 47,184 Posted December 3, 2017 Sold out in four and a half hours. 400 tickets were set aside to be sold daily. In Aki, it took 50 minutes to sell out, Natsu-an hour and a half.
Gurowake 4,150 Posted December 3, 2017 So yes, tickets were slightly easier to come by. But there's still easily more people that want seats at the prices they charge than there are seats, so it's not an issue.
Tsuchinoninjin 1,290 Posted December 3, 2017 Maybe some people who want to go are actually getting the tickets instead of guys punting them over to resale sites immediately.
since_94 650 Posted December 3, 2017 Good morning everyone. Despite the January basho being referred to as a sellout, I see chair seat tickets are still available for many days on the ticket Oosumo site. What then is the criteria for calling it a sellout? 85% sold? 90% sold. I am genuinely curious. I will attend 4 days of the basho, and I am already excited. Akinomaki 41,757 Posted December 4, 2017 (edited) The buyers can abandon their ticket - not go to the convenience store to really buy it, or also give it back (a bit more complicated) - and it gets available again - initial sell-out is 100% Edited December 4, 2017 by Akinomaki
CT3* 331 Posted December 4, 2017 I made my usual January trip for sumo this year (was there for Kisenosato's first yusho), but will likely skip it for 2018. Glad I already bought a Harumafuji tegata.
Botanjiri 2 Posted December 7, 2017 (edited) I was delighted to get three 'A' seats in January. (I love the fold up table for sake .) In 2004 I was honored to be in the Kokugikan when the Emperor and Empress visited. I must write Akihito with my attendance plans for Hatsu basho. Tsuchinoninjin 1,290 Posted December 7, 2017 I don't have a permanent address in Japan but you gotta put one buying the tickets through the NSK site, so I always use the emperor's palace in Tokyo. Once they showed up and I was thinking "awkward..."
since_94 650 Posted December 20, 2017 As soon as tickets went on sale at 10am on Dec. 2,the ticket Oosumo site was overloaded with people trying to get tickets at that time. Since the initial offering, however, it has been possible to get individual chair seats up until now. As it stands, it appears there are only reserved chair seats left for one day, so those wishing to attend the basho without lining up on day-of-event should act now and not sleep on it. damarankai 0 Posted January 7, 2018 I have 3 arena B seats for the 15th and 16th but unfortunately have had to cancel our snowboard/sumo trip. Lucky I have NHK Premium!!! If anyone is interested in my tickets and knows a way around the Kokugikan ticket machine 'original credit card used for ticket purchase' requirement, pm me

Based on my meagre one-bout experience (I had tickets, but the people in my hostel who wanted to go didn't). It was May and there was a huge Kisenosato hype. You could try a little later, but if you really want to be sure... ...Scalpers? No idea.

Edwardoho 23 Posted January 16, 2018 In case anyone was wondering, general admission tickets were available at 11am today. When I next went past the ticket office at 2pm it was closed.
