Preparations of the Y/O-Aki 2017

Kisenosato has started light training today at his heya in Tokyo-session closed to the public. He did some light stuff and perspired well. He now has a left ankle injury as well which he suffered on day 5 of last basho in his bout against Ikioi. "I've still got a long way to go," he told reporters after the session.

Hopefully he will sit out Aki and come back for Kyushu. I hope Kakuryu will do the same. It sure would be nice to have 4 mostly healthy yokozuna competing together. I say mostly healthy because I am not certain a rikishi over the age of 30 is ever completely healed.

And with Harumafuji needing possible surgery on his elbow, that's all we need to have four yokozuna on the banzuke but only one possibly finishing the basho if the injured ones decide to come back prematurely in Aki and then have to withdraw again. That's one thing the NSK doesn't need right now for sure.

It seems they'll let Kisenosato slide by with that, but from what the YDC said, it's probably better for the others to just not show up at all than show up and go kyujo.

Hakuhou is worried. "I'll be facing  the bouts day by day. In my case it  may seem obvious that I get the yusho but it's not that simple. My targets at present  are the 40 yusho mark and the 1000 Makuuchi wins record- 44 more wins." he said.  Regarding his knee injury: "If I train, it's painful. If I rest, the pain is there. It's complicated."  He intends to resume training tomorrow. He usually starts going for degeiko a week after the Banzuke is published and may not be able to do that this time around. "I'll do what I am able to do at this point and see how I am on a daily basis," he summed.

Kadoban Ozeki Terunofuji has started training today. He faced heyamates Takarafuji and Homarefuji and was 7-15. When pushed back, he did not offer resistance needlessly just to be on the safe side. "I just wanted to see how my knee responded to pressure. I'm mostly cured. I still don't have  my ring sense back, though. I am definitely in for Aki. I'm going for the yusho!!" he declared.

Kisenosato: "I'll take things slowly and prepare accordingly. I can only do what I can do.."  He was at Tagonoura beya this morning but did not do any sumo. He practiced using a left otsuke with some Makushita guys there. "Will I be doing some sumo tomorrow?  I'll see how I feel," he answered the journalists.

I'm worried too, about Hakuho. If any of the other three yokozuna turn up healthy I'll be perfectly happy, but I don't believe they will. So if Hakuho starts getting the sniffles we'll have four yokozuna and yet none of them will actually be fighting at full strength...

Takayasu went for degeiko at Tokitsukaze beya and said he had 25 bouts against Shoudai and others. "I will go out with all my might and gambarize," he ad-libbed.

Kakuryu today at butsukari-geiko - he went to Shikoroyama-beya but did no sumo himself, only the basics: "It (the injury) is definitely better, but I'm at a slowdown. Doing it halfway leads nowhere."

Hakuhou intends to skip tomorrow's YDC soken. Today he just did the fundamentals- shiko etc at home. "My knee is in bad shape. I won't be able to do anything even if I did show up at the soken. If my feeling and my body aren't as one I can't do any sumo.." he explained. 

As for Kisenosato he will see how he feels tomorrow morning and will decide if he appears at the soken or not. "I prefer to rebuild my body without hurrying things. I want to mount the dohyo at my best, " he broken-recorded.

Yokozuna Kakuryuu went to Shikoroyama beya yesterday for degeiko. "It's my first training session since my injury," he explained. He trained with the lower rankers and was positive. 10 days ago, he said he could barely walk. Soken? "I guess I can't go.." he said. He did not do real serious training and it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon. Aki entry unclear.

More on Takayasu's degeiko to Tokitsukaze beya yesterday. He faced Shoudai, Yutakayama and Nishikigi and was 19-6. "Not enough bouts.." he said. He usually goes for the upper left hand grip at the tachiai. "I'm gonna try some new stuff like going for the left underarm grip.. If I fail, I'll try to get the over arm grip quickly. It's still a work in progress.." he added. He will be at the soken tomorrow.

Kyujo situation:

Kakuryuu: "I still can't do any sumo. I can't do any serious first step. I'll wait till the beginning of the week and see what's what and then decide." His Oyakata has declared that the next basho he appears in is really important. "If I will be in perfect condition it will be OK. I'm at 60-70 percent," added Kakuryuu.

My guess- Kisenosato and Kakuryuu out, Hakuhou in, but after he gets his second loss after Day 5, out as well. Terunofuji yusho.

Finally, it is about time for Terunofuji to start his tsuna-run.

I was getting impatient about this.

I picked Terunofuji to win in Nagoya. I am picking Harumafuji to win the Aki basho. This would be his 9th and, probably, final yusho. Go Ama!

Hakuho in the yusho interview last basho mentioned that he was really impressed when as a 6 year old he met Wakanohana I, who on his tour around the world to research sumo roots came to Mongolia, and that he got an umaibo from him. Maker Yaokin was delighted about that PR and sent Hakuho an ample supply of it - Hakuho revealed the truth though: "I didn't eat it then and gave it to the horse (uma), umaibo and uma" - with the usual smile of delight about his dajare. http://www.chunichi.co.jp/chuspo/article/sumo/news/CK2017083102000157.html

You should have left out the "picked Terunofuji to win in Nagoya" part and just predicted that Harumafuji would win the Aki basho. One's credibility as an expert prediictor is severely damaged by preceding one's prediction with a statement of  your most recent error--which in this case was a pretty bad one.

I'm no expert. Just a hunch. The only non-injured Yokozuna. Takayasu and Mitakeumi not yet ready for prime time. Terunofuji injured. Ama in Aki!

Are we so sure? Harumafuji didn't opt for surgery for his inflamed elbow after the last basho.
