Akinomaki 41,840 Posted January 18, 2017 Last year Mainichi had a series about the okami-san of several heya. I always wanted to post from that, now an article with several of them appeared http://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20170118_484645.html so here is the gallery so far Takanohana-beya - Keiko Hanada, west yokozuna on the Shukan Post okami-san banzuke that also got an article last year, but was not published in full on the net. Akinomaki 41,840 Posted January 18, 2017 In Japan everything gets a banzuke - and this isn't one of women, but of the 2nd half of a heya top - a job occupied by women.

Akinomaki 41,840 Posted January 18, 2017 Isegahama is likely top because she manages such a hot bunch of sekitori, esp. 2 yusho winners - and Terunofuji was still hot to become the next yokozuna when they made the banzuke.

Akinomaki 41,840 Posted January 18, 2017 Remember, this is Shukan Post that produced the banzuke They go for looks of course. But okami-san get evaluated by their skill to manage the heya, for beauty contests we have the sekitori marriage threads.

Especially since the primary ranking point is based on "looks" or "hotness"? Edited January 18, 2017 by Fukurou

inhashi 2,363 Posted January 18, 2017 I'm glad to see some recognition given to the okamisan. They play a major role in heya operations and to keep these ladies hidden away in the shadows only for the men to take in the glory is not fair (Then again, this is Japan we are talking about). I do question this media's ranking based on looks though That is just downright silly. To hold down a building full of relatively young men can not be an easy task.

You can argue the value of it but it is in fact sumo related.

Especially since the primary ranking point is based on "looks" or "hotness"? We are not posting rankings here at all, I have just mentioned that Shukan Post has published such a banzuke - which is NOT based on looks, but simply includes that as well: rikishi popularity is also influenced by their looks: why do you think Okinoumi and Endo got chosen to do the hugging? I only mentioned that Hanada Keiko was put on the west yokozuna spot because that was the title of the article - and mentioned the east yokozuna - for all other okami-san no rankings are mentioned. And that ranking is not for looks, but for ability to manage the heya and make it successful.

Speaking as a teacher, no it's not, but you wouldn't think so from certain students' attitude. I know where your coming from.
Akinomaki 41,840 Posted January 19, 2017 (edited) 14 hours ago, Fukurou said: Rating the okami by their looks is sumo related? It is - it is heya related. The okami-san is not only managing the heya, but also an outward representative: at heya parties, facing the koenkai members, and we see her in that function at the promotion to ozeki and yokozuna or in the yusho pictures. You can't compare looks with looks. I guess you would object to both of these as a ranking of women, but in a ranking of all US first ladies since 1900, looks will have a different meaning than in a ranking of female bodybuilders. Looks for okami-san means to look good in Japanese clothing and have a good style and conduct - in her working dress for official heya occasions. orandashoho 720 Posted January 19, 2017 (edited) Also, the okami-san might be acting as surrogate mother to the very young rikishi who enter the stable, supporting them when they have an emotional crisis, etc. After all, the stable is not also their collective house, but also a home.
