Kumagatani-oyakata arrested

Recommended Posts

Is there some chance the Kumagatani name gets changed at this point?

No. The names are effectively treated like public offices are - the incumbent may be disgraced as a person, but the position lives on.

Have any names left the list over the years?

Short answer: Only those that are expressly time-limited in nature, when rikishi are permitted to continue to use their own name for a while - either for life as Taiho was (and Kitanoumi and Takanohana are), or during a two/three/five-year grace period immediately after retirement.

Long answer: here. Yes, some other names have lapsed, but always due to highly special circumstances, and none in the last 50+ years.

Next day of the trial. The victim was heard, with a partitioning screen between him and Yamamura. He repeated the same things that were reported before, adding that he wants the accused to never do the same again - and refusing to accept a settlement out of court.

Next time the accused will be questioned.

There are bad apples in every barrel, but this one truly gives me the creeps. As does the idea that such behaviour could have gone on for so long without NSK putting a stop to it.

Will the sentence make a difference? I hope so.

A caption reads Futagoyama beya. Isn't that Takanohana(I) doing the beating?

Yamamura pays the victim 1.53 million yen - and that's it: he showed repentance, the best way to get treated kindly at court and in society in Japan, and members of the sumo world obviously still get special treatment.

The judge (who apparently knows nothing about ex-Kanechika's deeds in that world - or was a Kanechika fan) : "The world you've been in was a gorgeous world, your life there brought many obligations and I think was full of stress. Now you have been freed of that stress and should think about why you committed those crimes. Your shisho Kitanoumi died and you were dismissed from the sumo world. I want you to go on in life not with the shikona Kanechika but as the person Kanechika, proceeding on a new path."

Yamamura, standing to attention: "Hai-!"
