GROUP E, ROUND 2, DAY 11 results (includes standings and observations).

First, a mono-ii was called and the refyoji appreciates the catch and made some adjustments to remedy the Day 10 results. Please check again.

Furanohana vs Chijanofuji was a great back-and-forth match with 3 lead changes and Furanohana getting a 3-2 win. It took all 10 slots in the line up to determine the final outcome. In victory, Furanohana re-orders the food and dancers from his Round 1 win and adds Croatian, Ecuadoran, Nigerian food (pršut, encebollado, asaro) and dancers (kolo, sanjuanito, egwo amara) to the celebration. Chijanofuji reflects on the 10-pick battle with shots of šljivovica from Bosnia-Herzegovenia, palm wine from Cameroon, and kirsch from Switzerland.

As you can see, Kotononami has a commanding lead in the run-up to this last round. It is conceivable that he could be knocked out, but very unlikely. It would require a severe drubbing from Leonishiki, and for Kaiomitsuki to crush Kintamayama. It is possible, but would require a 5 point goal difference swing. Kintamayama is down but not completely out. But with a gap of 9 points between him and current second place... it doesn't look good.

Maguroyama: I feel I'm in a position to gamble a bit and so it's time for the Elephants to step up their game. In this WC of shockers you can't really trust anyone, but "normally" Argentina and Portugal should be stronger than their African opponents. Japan plays Colombia who are ensured of advancement and thus may slack off a bit. But what do I know...
shimodahito: my high M pick Greece roster plays league in Spain, Italy, Germany, Turkey, England, Scotland. This round faith pick: Switzerland. This round no-faith pick: none. Maguroyama is my last opponent. Our #1, #2, #3 (ARG-BEL-POR) teams are the same so the mid line-ups will decide. I look forward to the match.
Refioji Pregame: Maguroyama is gambling big with Ivory Coast who need only need a draw - seems reasonable. But having possibly demotivated Portugal and Bosnia so high is a real risk - and he has Belgium quite low, maybe fearing a B-team? Shimodahito's lineup is comparatively risk-free.

Jejima: What a nightmare of a World Cup... I actually expect Germany to draw with the USA (would benefit both sides), but I don't imagine they would lose, so they can have top slot. At number 3, England really need to pull off at least a draw to give me a chance in this match.

Pandaazuma: While my ® team is likely to beat Jejima's, he has six likely winners in his line-up to my three, meaning I'm going to need luck big time here. My only option is to go for it and put my ® team a little lower than I would normally in the hope of breaking my opponent's chain against one of his less-likely-to-win teams...and hope that my top lads win and keep my chain intact. With Portugal's draw the last slot has been filled and we have the final results.

I hope I counted the goals well.

SInce Portugal didn't lose, chain of chishafuwaku broke only in Slot 6. With Ecuador's win he scored 1 more goal.

Fujiko has her chain broken in Slot 6, too, but didn't have enough fortune to score any goal.

I had problems with copy-paste from e-mail to the forum, more like problem in the forum. It pasted it bold and underlined, and swithing to regular and not underlined didn't work.

So I had to delete it, post it and then edit it and re-do it again. It was a fight, but I succeeded.

You are very inpatient, Ando, give the Refioji at least 10 min. :)

You have used Saruyama's Round 1 lineup for his Round 2 match, and your lineup for Terarno is a strange mix of his actual R1 and R2 lineups.

Thanks Asashosakari, for catching my errors. I don't know how I copied the wrong line-up for Saruyama from Jejima's posting (may be I did the previous one).

I removed the Tables not to cause confusion.

I have no time to fix them because I have a lot to do at work before leaving on vacation this Thursday.

I shouldn't respond to Chushafuwaku's posting, but if I hadn't do that I wouldn't know that my Tables are messed up. :)

Furanohana put a real hurting on the rest of the field, winning all 31 games and averaging nearly 5 goals in the process. He's followed by the trio of shimodahito, Kotononami and Achiyama who only lost to the dominator and drew against each other. (Achiyama had another draw against Chijanofuji to fall slightly behind the other pair.)

Pandaazuma already bemoaned his bad luck a few posts up, and it's borne out in these results, too, as he's the highest-ranking player to walk away from his BWC matchup with a loss. Chijanofuji can join him in commiserations as he's another player who averaged more than 2 points overall but lost the match that truly counts, and Kaiomitsuki and Fujiyama aren't far behind.

The lower parts of the standings are a veritable draw festival, with the last one-third of the players all posting at least 6 tied scores. That was slightly good news for the bottom quartet who weren't able to win anything, but at least avoided the disaster scores posted by the Round 1 bottom-dwellers. Nevertheless, they all did finish without scoring any goals. KikoCookie can count herself lucky that her BWC match was one of those draws.

Looking at the individual results, it's a very weird mix of low- and high-scoring matchups, with 0-0 alone accounting for more draws than seen in Round 1 altogether. One of them stands out by lasting through more than half the chains:

Actually, before I post the overall standings, I'd like to request comments on a tricky issue. So far I've always simply summed up each round's results. That's straight-forward if (like in Bench) the number of players is the same in each round:

Player 1:

25 W, 0 D, 6 L = 2.42 / 3

13 W, 0 D, 18 L = 1.26 / 3

----

38 W, 0 D, 24 L = 3.68 / 6

Player 2:

22 W, 0 D, 9 L = 2.13 / 3

16 W, 0 D, 15 L = 1.55 / 3

----

38 W, 0 D, 24 L = 3.68 / 6

Both players are obviously tied, and it doesn't matter whether you sum up the wins and losses, or you sum up the average points per round.

However, with the BWC field getting cut after the 4th round, this will not be nearly that easy. For instance, take a group round (31 opponents) and the final round (9 opponents):

Player 1:

25 W, 0 D, 6 L = 2.42 / 3

3 W, 0 D, 6 L = 1.00 / 3

----

28 W, 0 D, 12 L != 3.42 / 6

Player 2:

22 W, 0 D, 9 L = 2.13 / 3

They still have the same number of wins and losses, but the sum of the round points is quite different now, favouring the player who did better in the short-handed final round.

I'm actually not sure which way to calculate it - straight wins and losses obviously makes different players directly comparable, but it also means that the later rounds of the competition become more and more meaningless - it will be hard to catch up to the leader if you only have a few games in which to do it. Somebody could put up big scores in the first 4 rounds (= 124 matches), and be very difficult to beat through the final 3 rounds (= only 47 matches).

That wouldn't be a problem if we simply sum the averaged scores, because that would mean 3 "average points" are up for grabs in each round, no matter how many games actually go into calculating those 3 points. However, it could mean that somebody could win with a pure W-D-L record that's worse than that of some other players. That's not really in keeping with the MCP idea, but on the other hand the MCP was never meant to be applied to a two-tiered (group stage -> knockout) competition anyway - in Bench Sumo, all 15 days are equal, that's not the case here.

So, I wouldn't have any problem with the knockout stages receiving equal weight (option #2), but I'd like to know how everybody else feels about it.

Group G Final Round Scoring Update

The final round has begun and there have been no surprises so far, and this is reflected in the line-ups. In our first match, Kuroimori has a slight advantage in that Mexico is quite high up his order while Cameroon is safely at slot 10 for both players. Both had Brazil top so it is so far so good.

Well, I'm not proposing to overthrow Jezz's plan for the main competition; the active players will get cut after the Last 16 round, so in the end only 10 players will be competing for the MCP title, too. I'm just wondering if players prefer the easier-to-follow scoring, or the more meaningful scoring.
