I am a big fan of Hiromasa (1:17).  When I went to the Kokugikan back in September of 2015, I wandered over beside the western hanamichi during the morning bouts on Day 13.  He gave me a friendly smile as he went about his various duties.  But this video features his flowery fan twirl, which makes me an even bigger fan.

This NHK special came up on my YouTube account after viewing the Shide Kou clip posted by Akinomaki.  It dates back to July 2016.  Perhaps it will be of interest.

Too bad there’s no Kunio on those. Kunio is the best, it’s been empirically proven.

The new yobidashi Yuuta Miya for Tagonoura-beya has a unique background: he's 3rd year in the Kaiyo High School sumo club in Niigata. Yobidashi usually start directly after middle school - and are not quite of rikishi built: Yuuta was at over 160kg, went to 148.8 in the documentary, and when the program was aired Nov. 24th had reached 129kg. His job application is a central part of the documentary, with a comment of Tagonoura-oyakata and Takayasu, as Yuuta came to greet him. Yuuta didn't make it to the team for the kokutai and had given up on the path of a rikishi, but wanted to be part of ozumo. He got accepted and will start after graduation.

I'm very surprised that no one has singled out Makuuchi Yobidashi Shigeo for his incredibly beautiful singing.  He's brings tears to my eyes.  He sings like a male angel!  I could listen to him all day!!  Does anyone know of a video with him singing in it?  I think he's in Kokonoe Beya.

Yuuta Miya has started the yobidashi training in Tagonoura-beya on Feb 11th, he returned home on the 27th for the graduation ceremony today at the school. He's now given as 174cm, 123kg - and he'll continue to slim down. The heya has handed in  to the NSK the application to employ him as yobidashi, as soon as he gets the approval, he'll start as newbie yobidashi. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201903010000162.html

Again a yobidashi with plenty of not only female fans, like topic/yobidashi-keisuke/- also musicians on the forum like the young (21) and shy Hiromasa from Yamahibiki-beya.

Yobidashi Hiromasa- how it should be done.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSQ62XNKHhU

In his 7th year as yobidashi, still the 5th from the bottom in the hierarchy - sumo fans are thrilled by his voice - regular HQ video provider Shide Kou has a Hiromasa collection search?q=呼び出し+大将.

His mother had told the story that at age 3 or 4, he sat in seiza gazing at the sumo broadcast. When his favorite Dejima lost, he banged weeping on the TV like smashing it. As a present for his 5th birthday, his mother took him to watch Dejima at asageiko in (the old) Musashigawa-beya. Hiromasa read out loud and smoothly the shikona of the rikishi from the wooden tags on the wall, to the surprise of the sekitori group. It was during the Aki basho and they also went to the kokugikan. Hiromasa couldn't take his eyes off a yobidashi preparing at the hanamichi: "Cool!" -  he got called to his room and when he returned smiling to his nervous mother with a manju he'd got from the yobidashi, he had it in his grip like a treasure. Before entering primary school he declared: "I'll become a yobidashi." With middle school graduation he entered Kitanoumi-beya on the spot.

His mother, a nurse who had raised him alone, died in his 3rd year as yobidashi, summer 2015. In autumn the shisho Kitanoumi died - he had times where his heart was in turmoil.

He always sleeps with a mask to protect his throat. "I want to call out so that it can be heard in the last row of the 2nd floor. To cheer up the spirits of the rikishi, so they can give 120%"

His dream is to call out a yusho deciding bout - and at as his home Kyushu basho it would be the best (he's from Omuta town, Fukuoka).

Since I already necroed the tokoyama thread last month and I can't think of a better place to put this yobidashi news:

It was pointed out by an eagle-eyed fan on X today that Ajigawa-beya's Akitaka has apparently moved to Oshima-beya. As far as I can tell from cached versions of the Kyokai's list, the change was posted sometime this week. Akitaka was an original recruit by Ajigawa, not somebody who moved as part of the branch-out two years ago, so this is somewhat odd.

A new yobidashi (...) will start from the Natsu basho.

Yobidashi: Akitaka (安希隆,  あきたか), Ajigawa-beya, 16 years old.

Akitaka was present during the Haru basho, learning the ropes before the day's action started.

An Abema on-screen graphic during a break in the Day 2 action helps get things really correct:

NikkanSP premium today with the story of tate-yobidashi Jiro, he with the hated voice - he retires after the basho, to the delight of the fans of harmonic voices. He turns 65 on day 8, but continues till day 15 of course. Fan of Kitanoumi, he joined Mihogaseki-beya for Haru 1978.

When will Kunio get to Makuuchi?

I expect the yobidashi to be included in this year's round of urakata promotions after the Aki basho. While predicting individual moves is partly guesswork, I'd be surprised if Kunio doesn't get the nod this time, as by then it would be four years since his immediate senior Mitsuaki went up.

There'll be no functional difference yet though, he'll still be working Juryo torikumi for quite a while.

Pictures of various Oshiogawa-beya members were making the rounds on social media recently (1, 2) that include a new yobidashi trainee referred to as 風一, presumably to be read Kazeichi.

(I'll just copy-paste the wording from my gyoji post a few minutes ago...)

Assuming he's eventually hired, this will max out the yobidashi capacity of 45 until the next retirement; the next scheduled departure is that of sanyaku yobidashi Shiro (second in seniority behind younger fuku-tate yobidashi Katsuyuki), who turns 65 in December 2027.
