Kintamayama 47,171 Posted April 15, 2013 Injured Chiyotairyuu promises to enter the Natsu basho. He fractured his right foot on day 6 of the last basho and went kyujo, not before beating one Yokozuna and two Ozeki the first time he ever faced them. "I was told I would be in a cast for a month, but I tried to remove it as quickly as possible.." he said. He is now walking and doing some suriashi. At the keikoba he sees 4 other up and coming sekitori training furiously (Chiyonokuni and probable new-maku Chiyoootori having 20 bouts and Juryo Chiyoarashi and new Juryo Chiyoou chucking in the salt and joining the fray). "That is a great incentive for me to get going!!", he said.
Benevolance 2,534 Posted April 15, 2013 When it comes time to do the banzuke, does it factor in that Chiyotairyu beat the two ozeki and a yokozuna and concerned Hakuho enough that Big H henka'd? Or does it only matter that Chiyotairyu went 3-4-8 for the tournament?

Kintamayama 47,171 Posted April 15, 2013 Only the record counts. Always. It's a 3-12 for all intents and purposes and should land him around the M10-11 mark.

Any time I have seen him being interviewed as well he always seems comfortable and lingers a lot longer than other rikishi who just want to get out of there. Any time I have seen him being interviewed as well he always seems comfortable and lingers a lot longer than other rikishi who just want to get out of there. Frankly, I would expect all collegiate rikishi to be a bit more talkative and interesting, having a broader education and not having entered the secluded world of sumo until their 20s should count for something... In any case, Chiyotairyu is a good rikishi, and I think that with his decent fighting abilities and good media skills he has it in him to be a great asset to the NSK once he reaches the upper ranks. If he can manage to beat his bad luck and his injuries and show us his full potential that is...

shumitto 418 Posted April 16, 2013 I like sumo pictures in general but those from keiko sessions capture something about the aura of the sport. Very nice !
Asameshimae 220 Posted April 16, 2013 It's more than just his background. Tairyu says what he thinks. I recall a time in front of Kokonoe where he was talking very freely about what he thought of a number of his stablemates - good and bad. It was quite an education. :)

Kintamayama 47,171 Posted May 3, 2013 Dewanoumi Ichimon rengo keiko day 2 today at Kitanoumi beya. 18 sekitori arrived, although it was not mandatory. Baruto had the most bouts- 35 in all, against the likes of Tochiouzan and Goueidou- solid, serious keiko. "I just did them one by one, concentrating on each one. Great keiko!" he said later. It's the first time Dewanoumi ichimon actually holds an ichimon training session. In the past, they held a one-day thing on New Year's day. The place was buzzing. "They all decided to come on their own so that was good. I'd like to continue this, even if it will happen only during the Tokyo bashos," said an approving Kitanoumi Rijicho.

Akinomaki 41,730 Posted May 4, 2013 Dewanoumi Ichimon rengo keiko day 2 today at Kitanoumi beya. 18 sekitori arrived, although it was not mandatory. "They all decided to come on their own so that was good. I'd like to continue this, even if it will happen only during the Tokyo bashos," said an approving Kitanoumi Rijicho. Baruto 26-9, Goeido 16-5, some utter defeats against Baruto, who also was strong against Tochiozan. Combined keiko, open to all, will be held till the 6th. On the 4th Goeido 22-3, Tochiozan 17, winning 3 against Baruto, against whom he usually performs poorly. Visiting Kitanoumi-rijicho claimed that Goeido should be much more overwhelming - in 20 bouts in a row - and that Tochiozan needs to have a wider range in his sumo. New makuuchi Azumaryu took part as well, against Goeido, Ikioi etc.: "They are really strong. The tachi-ai is also quick and heavy."
Akinomaki 41,730 Posted May 6, 2013 Last day of the Dewanoumi-ichimon goudou (instead of rengo) keiko today at Chiganoura-beya, with Baruto, Azumaryu etc. - 11 sekitori were there. Baruto was there 3 days, having about 80 bouts in all: "Anyhow, the only thing is doing it with utmost effort."
Benevolance 2,534 Posted May 6, 2013 Ikioi fierce keiko with Okinoumi on the 30th at degeiko in Hakkaku-beya: 22-10 I hope that Ikioi manages a better showing this tournament. I have a standing bet with my wife that Ikioi will hit Sanyaku before Chiyotairyu that I'd rather not lose... 22-10 with Okinoumi isn't bad; Okinoumi is no slouch. Ikioi needs a little more training, a little less singing boat tours this time around.
Kintamayama 47,171 Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) Houmashou is steadily getting better and preparing for Natsu. He had 12 bouts with Sandanme rikishi from his stable today. He was also checking out his tachiai. "It's all about the tachiai..You've been gone for awhile and only did shiko, so you should remember that.." said Shikoroyama Oyakata to his deshi rather loudly at some point. Houmashou is still not ready yet and has yet to do any keiko with sekitori. OTOH, he was not favoring his injured shoulder at all, so that's good. He had surgery last December, returned for the one day tournament in February and aggravated the injury, so he's being extra careful this time around. Akinomaki 41,730 Posted May 7, 2013 Big eater Masunoyama tries a diet cutting on carbon hydrates, his favourite foods. He was at the Dewanoumi-ichimon keiko on the 6th and afterwards at the chanko he first went for salad.Rice after the salad and only one bowl, as his blood sugar level was up recently after being in 3 eating competitions on TV.Eating slowly, chewing a lot.He recently dropped on the banzuke and takes new measures to get his body in better shape: "Now my body feels light enough to do a backward somersault. In reality I can't do one though." Okinoumi, basically said to hate keiko, was on degeiko at Kasugano-beya, energetic 17 with same basho entry Tochiozan (3-3) and others.
