Kintamayama, about those extra shoves: when you get slapped in the face it really pisses you off.

Extra shoves are :

A) Frowned upon by the Kyokai and may cause punishments.

B) Dangerous and can cause unnecessary injuries, since the bout is already over.

Slaps are:

A) Legal. No one will be reprimanded, punished or banished.

B) in the course of a bout, not after.

If every rikishi who gets slapped would counter with an extra shove, we'd have 4 rikishi left by Friday.

Hakuho really seems to be taking his feud with Kisenosato seriously. It seems that Harumafuji will be our first even-tempered Yokozuna in quite a while.

Re. Extra shoves. There are many instances, though, were the "extra shove" is probably perceived as "necessary" by the one dealing it out. Border of the dohyo situations, were things just go too fast to pull back the most recent attack. I think that in at least one third of such situations the culprit didn't realize that he had already won.

I love the way Kaisei checks that his fallen opponent is okay. It seems to me that he is a great role model for how rikishi should behave.

Harumafuji, even-tempered? Don't bet on it...

I ain't sayin' it's right, I'm just saying getting punched in the face makes you dizzy, but getting slapped stings like a mo-fo and makes you furious. Not that everyone will do it, but if you take a nice full-handed one to the face, you'll be fighting extra hard to say the least.

Like Charlie Murphy said :" I'm standing there I'm thinking, "This nigga really has lost his fucking mind." First of all, you don't slap a man. Ok. I mean, even when slapping was fashionable, ya know, they did it in Paris, some guy would come up, *whack* ,"I challenge you to a duel." They would have a gunfight after that, somebody had to go! "

Hak's fighting style is simply changing from what it once was...At one time, the "go with the flow" worked and Hak was the most patient of guys at the tachi-ai, waiting for his opponent's first move. As with Asa, Kaio, Chiyo and a lot of the older guys, techniques and strategies change as things go along. Might be that Hak can no longer be the Passive Yok he was before, rattling off all those yushos. Maybe he's becoming a more Pre-emptive Yok who's beginning to use his shoulders as opening weapons, like Asa used to.

What Im seeing lately is less yotzu and more tzuppari bouts. I think. Certainly the lockups that used to be more comon are giving way to shoving and more active dances. Am I wrong in seeing this? Does anyone else notice this as well?

*puts up hand*

Me too Lex! In my limited sumo watching career, I haven't seen a break and stare down in the midst of a match but in this basho it has happened more than a couple of times.

It seems to also be more throw attempts rather than force outs. ( sorry didnt do the stats just perception ). Hadn't seen the head throw before but then the next day the non sanyaku were attempting them as well.

Sumo seems a static sport in the sense that there are fixed methods of winning but there does seem to be trending fashions on popular techniques. Like courtiers folllowing in the wake of rising power.

As for Hakuho, I seem to remember he had the opening face slap at tachi-ai for quite a few bashos and then switched to something else. In this age of tech, with slo- mo and the rewind button, perhaps he has to change it up cause of the other rikishi "knowing" his moves. Adapt or die neh?

As an aside, loved this basho. Homasho is no longer just absorbing defensively but moving forward. Yay!

Grateful thanks kitamayama. Really like your monoii comments.

*waving to YBF and ronnie * that wormhole was dark. Love this basho.

I'm not sure if you really understand the joke. You even might be interested in joining the parallel universe to this one. Just make a Google search for "Meet Japanese girls and cupids." and enjoy that universe (I'm sure those keywords won't distract you of all people in finding the true meaning).

That was a lifetime's worth of sumo in one bout for me.

The passion heart and elation at the end.

The touching of the dohyo with his forehead movingly symbolic and that grin.

Great basho .

Hey Ajisen, I wondered where you'd gotten to. Wormhole eh?

Great basho .

No doubt, you'll be having your own little Ama party now that your man has taken the biscuits (Band playing...)

Interesting to see that just before the last final "fling", both men, but particularly Hakuho, were breathing really heavily. Never, ever saw the Big Guy do that before. Nor have I ever really seen Hak ever taken to the limit. That was perhaps the best "yusho-deciding, final bell" match I have seen in years, and ranks higher than most of the Hak-Asa and Hak-HF dances.

Thank you so much for the video's Kinta, it has been a real pleasure to watch them, i really enjoyed the Masunoyama-Takayasu and Homasho-Kaisei bouts, sad for kaisei that he did not get his eighth win, the more i see of him the more i like him.

That was a truly epic last bout! I agree, it' been really a while since Hakuho has been put to test so much. Well done and omedetou to the shin-yokozuna!

Thank you for the videos too Kintamayama, you should be made this forum's honorary yokozuna for your efforts ; )

Edit: I also noticed that Aran did not henka once this basho, like it was mentioned in the video. If I was really cynical I would ask if that was the reason for his lousy result, but I guess in reality he was just outmatched at this rank.
