Last call for Migikataagari whose right shoulder will continue to rise without our attention after Natsu basho.

Back when I started doing these posts about two years ago there were about 50 rikishi who fit the criteria; right now there are 60, and chances are the number is going up again after this basho.

Last call for Migikataagari whose right shoulder will continue to rise without our attention after Natsu basho.

(Applauding...)

Random late night bleary-eyed comment. Ryuden of Tier 2 has previously slipped completely under my radar, and I've only now gone and looked at the bouts of his that I didn't see during the Haru basho. Great result and he looked pretty solid, though not spectacular, which probably goes some way to explaining his long-serving presence in Makushita (21 consecutive basho). He could well make it to Juryo, but unless he's keeping an extra gear or two in reserve I'm not sure he'll progress beyond the four or five basho mark, or maybe bounce up and down the same number of times during a few year period. I'd be pleased to see him disprove that though, I do like such solidly consistent rikishi. (And, he's from Kofu-shi as well...)

Good to see that a few of these young thrusters are also featuring in your longest kachi-koshi streak edition for Natsu, as well (albeit only Sadanoyama from Tier 1). Hopefully Hakuyozan won't take too much longer to reach Makushita so he can join this thread as well, and if he stays in the KK game too, so much the better.

Time for the Natsu basho roundup, let's get started with Tier 1:

A pretty successful basho for our most promising youngsters, with one notable exception.

D'oh, never posted the roundups for the other tiers. Let's rectify that...

Natsu basho Tier 2:

Unfortunately no kachikoshi for highest-ranked Ryuden, who will have to wait a little longer for his first true juryo promotion opportunity. He'll be replaced in the top spot by promising youngester Chiyomaru who had a bit of a disappointment of his own, finishing only 4-3 after a 4-1 start. Still, kachikoshi at a career-high rank is always good news.

The rest of the makushita-ranker results are the usual mishmash of good and not so good, highlighted by further career-high KKs for Chiyoo (4-3) and Wakamisho (5-2), as well as a strong 6-1 performance by heavyweight Kawanari, albeit nearly 30 ranks removed from his own career high. A not so happy Natsu basho was had by long-struggling Kotokensei whose makushita return after three years ended in a 1-6 drubbing.

Down in the sandanme ranks most second-tier members performed quite well, with a 6-1, three 5-2's and a 4-3 on display, marred only by lanky Kotoeko's 3-4 record.

Onami is the rather skinny older brother of hard-charging Goshi, who will probably feature in this thread (but in Tier 1) before long himself. Onami actually looked undersized to me even for mid-sandanme, so his recent 4-KK run into makushita has been quite impressive. He's the speedy type who tries to overwhelm his opponents with a quick oshi/yori victory before they can get a hold of him, but is also pretty adept at the tricky stuff (pretty much by necessity), with already 7 katasukashi and 3 hikkake wins on his tally.

Kinunonami hasn't made too many waves so far, but on a closer look he's actually had an almost-prototypical career for a good middle-school prospect. No trouble breaking out of lower jonidan, entry to sandanme in two and a half years just after turning 18, establishing himself in the higher division right away, and then up and into makushita in another two years. So here he is now, not quite 20 yet. However, the mid-makushita rank his 6-1 will send him to will probably prove a bit too steep for now.

Lastly, I don't really have anything about Chiyosakae - all those talented Kokonoe kids are starting to look alike. ;-) Perhaps noteworthy, he's never scored outside the 3-4 to 5-2 area. He's also living proof that maezumo records can be misleading; he only scored 2-6 there, but he had the misfortune of starting in the star-studded Hatsu 2009 class, and consequently had to put up with Takatoshi (twice), Aoki/Tokushoryu, Azumaryu, Naoe/Kimikaze and Takanoiwa in his bouts. Talk about being thrown in the deep end.

And Natsu Tier 3:

Second basho in a row that a Tier 3 rikishi moves up to juryo! Congrats to Takanoiwa for converting his kachikoshi opportunity on Day 13. Pint-sized Kei followed him on senshuraku but wasn't quite ranked high enough to also get promoted. Perhaps in Nagoya.

Other than that, this was a pretty meh basho in the lowest tier of prospects, at least by pure results; we have to go down all the way into the Ms40's to find a rikishi with more than 4 wins. So let's celebrate small victories, namely the pair of 4-3's scored by Seiro and Tamadaiki at career-high ranks. Haru yusho winner Kairyu picked up the expected makekoshi in his first trip to the promotion zone, while joi mainstay Tochiyashiki finally managed to post back-to-back KK, even if we're just talking about two 4-3's.

Sasayama is also the older brother of an active rikishi, but he's already been passed by him; even less attentive readers should have no trouble spotting him in Tier 1. ;-) Already 22 on his makushita debut now, he's probably a longshot for future sekitori status.

Hmm, four months and nobody told me I should've added Yamaguchi to Tier 3 when he debuted as tsukedashi...Nagoya table corrected.

We trust your work :-D

It has called my attention how slow their progress is. Tochinohama, who I considered a while ago as almost stagnated climbing up the banzuke at a snail's pace, has managed nevertheless to have his name on a propects' list - tier 3, but still.

And the reason I stumbled upon Yamaguchi...yet another thread extension. Rikishi who are 25 and under (= at most 2 years past Tier 3) and have reached the makushita-joi zone to prove they actually have a (sort of) credible shot at becoming sekitori.

Incidentally, Ms3e Shosei and Ms7w Fujimoto would have been part of this tier until Natsu basho. Teraomaru has barely made it back in after two years now, though, and will be departing again soon.

It has called my attention how slow their progress is. Tochinohama, who I considered a while ago as almost stagnated climbing up the banzuke at a snail's pace, has managed nevertheless to have his name on a propects' list - tier 3, but still.

Keep in mind that Tier 3 has rather permissive entry criteria. There are a lot of rikishi in there that really won't get anywhere near juryo, not by age 23 and not by age 30. Especially those that only made their first thread appearance directly in Tier 3 - reaching makushita for the first time at age 22/23 isn't terribly impressive, unless it's a college rikishi who didn't have the opportunity to get there any earlier. But I've got to make a cutoff somewhere, and I'd rather not get into subjective judgements of who deserves to be on the list and who doesn't. Father Time will take care of the no-hopers soon enough anyway.

I hope the new Tier 4 will help correct those issues with Tier 3 to some degree. Just like it's probably a bit silly (but can't be helped) to have guys like Otakayama on a prospect list, I also wasn't happy to be sending somebody like Kagamio into the void even though he actually is a very good prospect for sekitori status right now. And it's not like a rikishi has to be in juryo before he turns 24...getting there at age 24/25 is often also good enough to allow a shot at a pretty good sekitori career.

Time to catch up on Nagoya basho...starting as always with Tier 1:

A strong performance in Tatsu's second appearance in upper makushita ended in a 5-2 record, with one of the losses coming against a particularly lame henka no less. Sasanoyama finished "only" 4-3, but was KK already after his 5th bout to stay MK-free for his career. Akinokawa also had a not so good second week, going one worse by dropping from 3-1 to 3-4 - still, he continues to demonstrate competetiveness in the middle of the division, which bodes well for the 19-year-old.

Masunosho and Tsurubayashi are still pretty new to makushita, and will put some distance between themselves and the bottom of the division after going 4-3 and 5-2 respectively. Masunosho is riding a 5-KK streak at the moment and may well be the #2 prospect in Ozumo now (after Tatsu) in terms of age and career advancement.

Terutsuyoshi, arguably the previous holder of that title, bounced off the makushita wall again - though unlike his first shot in March when he simply looked too small to be competitive, his Nagoya bouts seemed to be more a matter of being ungenki, losing easily to pulldowns and the like. I think he'll be back in makushita before too long. Kotokawazu probably will, too, as he looks to have found his level again after the 7-0 overpromotion from half a year ago. Aonosho's own 7-0 promotion from Haru basho probably needs some more correction though.

Tier 2:

Does anybody know what prompted Chiyomaru's kyujo in Nagoya? A shame to see him derailed this close to juryo. Other than his tumble down the banzuke, the upper reaches of Tier 2 won't be changing too much after the next 5 rikishi all finished 4-3 or 3-4. Kotofukuju and Nishikigi posted strong results (5-2 and 6-1) to put forward their names for increased observation. Nishikigi already did something very similar two years ago (6-1 from Ms37e in Kyushu 2010) but he didn't manage to be competitive in the extended promotion zone; perhaps he's more fit for the top 15 ranks now, though he'll have to show it in the next tier.

The three newcomers Kinunonami, Onami and Chiyosakae all finished with 3 wins. For Kinunonami that's a pretty impressive performance following a 6-1, let's hope he manages to ahead the sophomore slump now. The other two will be going back to sandanme for the moment.

Daishoiwa will also drop down as he went just 2-5 for his 3rd straight MK and didn't much look like the dominant rikishi who burst into makushita half a year ago. Hopefully he can straighten himself out and take another stab at makushita competition soon. In more positive news the sandanme Sadogatake trio of Kotokobai, Kotokensei and Kotoeko all posted 5-2's to secure a makushita return.

Aiyama has had a near-prototypical career for a middling prospect so far with some ups and some downs. After nearly two years of false starts he established himself in sandanme at age 18 and has now taken about two years to reach makushita, which is pretty good but not spectacular. How much he'll be worth watching now depends on how quickly he proves his mettle in makushita - it shouldn't be as long as he needed to stick in sandanme.

Nogami on the other hand got into sandanme just fine, but struggled big-time in the upper ranks there, including an injury derailment that sent him back into jonidan briefly. I honestly have no idea if his Nagoya 6-1 is a fluke or a sign that he's back on track. In any case, his arrival in Tier 2 is of a purely virtual nature as he turned 22 after Nagoya basho and will get passed down right to Tier 3 for his actual thread debut.

Tier 3:

The best news of the basho came out of this tier, courtesy of the successful juryo challenges of Kei and Yamaguchi. It's the third basho in a row that Tier 3 entrants have earned their kesho-mawashi.

The rest of the section wasn't that hot, with nearly everybody ranked in makushita finishing no better than 4-3. At least in Tochiyashiki's case it means he's going to make his first appearance in the immediate promotion zone, and for Seiro it was the 4th KK in a row. Irie even posted his 7th straight KK and remains free of makekoshi in his career, but as a collegiate entrant he also has a bit more to prove. The only two results better than 4-3 were posted by Higoarashi and Byakko, both of whom were more than 30 ranks below their career-bests.

Nagoya newcomer Sasayama hit the ultimate wall in his makushita debut, finishing 0-7. The opposite result complete with yusho was achieved by Watanabe, bouncing back from his own makushita debut MK in convincing fashion. Not sure how much he can do in the elevated heights of makushita-joi now, should be interested to see.

Also earning returns from sandanme to makushita were Mugendai and Tokizakura, while heavy makushita regular Mankajo has suddenly gone into freefall, combining for a 5-16 record over his last three tournaments.

Aokishin was already in excellent position for a makushita promotion over a year ago, but went 0-7 at Sd1w. That was followed by a three-basho absence that sent him down to jonokuchi. He has now returned with a combined 22-6 record to earn his makushita debut. At 23 years old he's essentially in the same position as a collegiate rikishi, so he'll need to keep moving up quickly to continue looking like a prospect.

And closing it out with the short Tier 4:

Azumaryu and Tochihiryu will be on the outskirts of the promotion zone for Aki after KK's, while Kagamio has experienced a small setback, and Teraomaru and Ryuonami demonstrate why they're probably not such hot prospects despite inclusion in this tier.

Watanabe will age out of Tier 3 after the basho, but his Nagoya yusho already assured him qualification for Tier 4 so he'll get another two years on our watch. Notoazuma and Hokudozan won't be so lucky, barring a 7-0 performance in Aki.
