Ikioi, Naoe and Hokuo also won't make it to the next edition, but at least they're all saying goodbye on a high note. And who knows, perhaps Ikioi has indeed turned a corner and it won't be too long until we see him in the sekitori ranks, even if we won't get to celebrate it in this thread. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted November 14, 2010 Oops...I prepared the update almost two weeks ago and completely forgot to post it. Well, here's the Kyushu edition of Heisei Hopefuls, now with a severely imbalanced pair of tables thanks to Masunoyama's ascent to juryo. The up/down movements are in comparison to hypothetical Aki versions of the re-assigned lists, not the actual Aki lists. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted November 28, 2010 Kyushu summary: Not the most overwhelmingly great basho for our youngest section with 5 MK and only 2 kachikoshi. Our oldest trackee Ryuden turned 20 years old before the basho and is celebrating his age of majority with his first 5-2 in a year, albeit also at his lowest rank in a year. Still, he'll be claiming the top spot for the first time since this thread started. Rookie entrant Sasakiyama may actually grab second place thanks to his successful 5-2 makushita debut...I haven't looked at the makushita banzuke in detail yet, but it could be close between the Chiyoarashi/Kotoyuki pair and him. Sasakiyama's fellow Hatsu 2010 high school debutant Saishin appeared to be a wee bit overwhelmed in makushita however (far from unusual for those who come in with a 6-1 jump), and will go back to sandanme for a bit more seasoning, as will Chiyomaru. Gonna be a major test for the very promising youngster who has made it to makushita at extremely high speed, despite missing nearly his entire first year with injuries. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted November 28, 2010 And the extended list: As mentioned at the start of the basho Nionoumi's 24th birthday is coming up, and he gave himself the best present imaginable as he's set to make his sekitori debut in January. List #2 Fujiazuma may also be exiting the list in an upward fashion - we'll have to wait and see whether he's in fact taking Tosanoumi's juryo spot outright, or perhaps can profit from a retirement by the veteran. All in all, it was a very successful basho for the upper-rankers in this part of our tracking project. 7 of the top 8 rikishi finished kachikoshi, and the two 6-1 playoff participants Kumagai and Chiyonokuni will also find themselves above Ms20 on the next banzuke. Well-hyped Kyokushuho will be getting his first shot at earning a kesho, most likely from Ms4. The Kyushu list rookies won't have much to write home about after this basho; Chiyozakura, Amatsu and Ryuonami finished 3-4 (taking some shine off the two collegiate guys), Asabenkei even followed up his 6-1 with a 1-6 and will head straight back to sandanme. Daikamifusa hasn't really registered much at all with me so far, perhaps some other forum members can enlighten us. Randomitsuki 2,904 Posted November 28, 2010 I seem to recall that Matsumoto got very favourable projections from Randomitsuki's Prospectatron early in his career - perhaps we can get updates? :-) Indeed he was. When my lower division obsession started in 2007 with some crude career predictions, Matsumoto was one of the chosen six (I bet with Kintamayama that I'll name six lower-division rikishi, four of whom will become sekitori; meanwhile, two have made it). Before Kyushu basho, the prospectatron had Matsumoto scheduled for a career high of Juryo 12. With his Makushita debut in Hatsu basho the predicted career high will be around Juryo 7. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted December 29, 2010 Hatsu 2011 update: Surprising to me, Ryuden has not ended up as the leading rikishi after 5-2's in his banzuke area weren't worth quite as much as I expected them to be, so instead the top spot is claimed by thread debutant Chiyootori (who's the very youngest makushita rikishi, to boot). Sasakiyama was also caught by the less-than-generous promotions and ended up 5th instead of 3rd. Still, he's the only rikishi not making his list debut who's at a career-high rank. Kotokensei finds himself down in jonidan after he was docked another rank on top of the customary 60-rank demotion for his Kyushu absence. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted January 23, 2011 (edited) Hatsu 2011 summary: Much better results than last basho, with 7 kachikoshi among our 10 hopefuls, three of them even scoring 6 wins. Chiyoarashi will be taking back the top spot from his stablemate Chiyootori and should find himself somewhere north of Ms20 on the next banzuke. Sasakiyama ran into the wall hard and might fall far enough that he'll need 5 wins to return to makushita right away. Or he could go one better like his Haru 2010 classmate Saishin did, who followed up his own wall encounter in Kyushu with a strong 6-1 bounceback performance. Chiyomaru also returns to makushita right away. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted January 23, 2011 And the guys on extended assignment...not so good results by the two top-rankers Kyokushuho and Kagamio, but Kumagai finished with a respectable 3-4 after his big jump up the rankings, and Chiyonokuni did even better, finishing 5-2 to take over first place for Haru (most likely at a single-digit rank), and let's not forget he's one of the youngest rikishi who isn't making the cut for the first list. Well-regarded high-school standout Tochiyashiki will stay right on his heels, and the top three will likely be rounded out by Tochihiryu (in his last basho before he turns 24), unless the banzuke makers are very lenient with Kyokushuho (or perhaps very generous on Byakko and his 7-0 yusho). Araumi and Takakiho already have turned 24 this month and won't be returning to this thread, but at least they're going out on a high-ish note with 4-3 records. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted May 6, 2011 (edited) Natsu 2011 update: As with everything in Ozumo it's been a while since the last time we've had something to update here. Of course, the sudden availability of many sekitori spots (and the likely subparness of their early claimants) may well kick this thread into overdrive in the next year. After Chiyootori in January it's now his stablemate Chiyoarashi who takes over the top spot and, depending on just how generous the banzuke makers will (need to) be, duplicating his 6-1 effort from four months ago could even see him reach juryo. Saishin's strong bounceback performance after his unsuccessful makushita debut saw him jump right into the middle of the division, even ahead of last basho's darling Chiyootori. At Ms11w Tochihiryu would have ranked #3 if he was still in. The actual top 4 are ranked right in that area, too, and they have an excellent chance for a surprise juryo promotion, possibly needing just a 5-2 record. Of course, for last basho's sandanme yusho winner Byakko this may be a bit much to ask. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted May 28, 2011 (edited) Natsu 2011 summary: A pretty successful basho for our young prospects with nobody scoring below 3-4 (Saishin's absence excepted), with the only makekoshi records being posted by Matsumoto and Akinokawa at their highest ranks. Chiyoarashi turned out to be ranked just a bit too low to figure into the juryo promotion decision, but his 5-2 record - also at a career high! - will still see him make a huge jump (I have him pencilled in at Ms3w), and with another four sekitori spots to be added back any kachikoshi should send him into the sekitori ranks just three years into his career. In fact, he'll probably have to contend with Kotoyuki (Ms5e in my guess) who topped his previous best performance in a big way, scoring 6 wins near his career-high rank. And even Chiyootori whose 6-1 was no less impressive may have a shot, although he'll probably be a bit too low around Ms10. Kasugayama-beya's Hakunishiki has been having the classic unheralded career of a middle school starter and still lacks the one big result - he's never scored 6 wins in a basho - but also has never gone MK in back-to-back tournaments, nor scored less than a 2-5 in any appearance. He has now strung together five small KKs in the last year to go from low sandanme to his upcoming makushita debut at only 19 years of age. He may be joined by Kotofukuju - known until this basho as Kotookuyama - whose 6-1 at Sd58e (in which he unsuccessfully challenged for a playoff spot on Day 13) would normally be a bit too low to reach makushita directly, but with about 24 excess spots to fill in the third division the banzuke makers were probably forced to expand the usual promotion corridors quite a bit. Kotofukuju's advance has been completely unlike Hakunishiki's slow and steady rise; this basho's 6-1 is already the second time he has achieved this impressive result, but he has also posted a 1-6 before and gone back-to-back MK on three different occasions (even back-to-back-to-back recently), dropping 50+ ranks on the banzuke each time. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted May 28, 2011 (edited) And a look at the extended club which has produced the biggest news of the basho - congratulations to 20-year-old Chiyonokuni for reaching juryo! (Showing respect...) The highest-ranked rikishi of this section took the opportunity by the horns and has claimed one of the 13 free Nagoya juryo spots with his 5-2 record. He'll become the second-youngest active sekitori after Masunoyama, and join him and Takayasu as Heisei-born kesho wearers. Kyokushuho narrowly missed the promotion with his 4-3 record at Ms12e, but reports are that the last spot was decided between him and Arawashi, so he's very likely to be Ms1 on the upcoming banzuke and will only need to duplicate his 4 wins to follow Chiyonokuni into juryo. Also with an excellent shot in Nagoya will be collegiate deshi Chiyozakura who posted the sole makushita 6-1 of the rikishi tracked here, and who should also be in the Ms1-Ms5 promotion zone, possibly as high as Ms2e. Time is running out for him, at least as far as this thread is concerned, as he'll be reaching the age cutoff after Aki basho. Noteworthy results were also posted by the Ms21 pair of Asahisho and Hishofuji who achieved 4-3's at their career-high ranks, by often-injured Onomatsu youngster Kei who went 5-2 near his highest rank, and by Okinofuji who scored the only other 6-1 of the list in mid-sandanme and may (with the same caveats as Kotofukuju above) return to makushita for the first time in two years. Nishiuchi is also taking the birthday exit, but unfortunately followed up his own Hatsu catastrophe (0-7 in his makushita debut) with another 3-4 makekoshi. Here, too, the upcoming number of debuts is in question. Guaranteed to join us is Mihogaseki prospect Masumiura whose birthdate just barely misses the Masunoyama cutoff between the two lists and who will consequently become the youngest entrant here in the second tier. His career thus far has followed more the Kotofukuju model, even featuring back-to-back missed tournaments that sent him down into jonokuchi a year and a half ago. Since coming back from that apparent injury break he has posted 8 straight KK and a combined 36-19-1 record, battering (and bettering) his old career-high rank of Sd86 five times, with the sixth coming up in makushita for Nagoya. Although he has posted five 4-win records in this KK streak, he didn't have to rely on his final bout to secure the KK at any time. Possibly joining him on the way into the thread is frequent shikona changer Otakayama (his fifth name since starting in 2004). If so, he's reaching makushita with the peculiar career record of 147-147. Turning 23 right before Nagoya basho he's not the greatest prospect ever, but hey, we'll take 'em as they come. In fact, he's still a year up on qualifier #3 - Kotokino, perhaps still better known (or at least remembered) as Kotoshimoda, is turning 24 next week, and so only joins us in a very ephemeral sense. Still, even if he's not making the thread, earning his makushita debut for July must surely be a nice birthday present to himself. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted July 11, 2011 Nagoya 2011 update: The hopefuls return to regular action with two members in the promotion zone - and with four available juryo spots guaranteed Chiyoarashi and Kotoyuki might not need anything more than a simple 4-3 to give us the first sekitori born in 1991. Ryuden dropped two spots in the standings despite a kachikoshi, but he does return to the top 15 makushita ranks for the first time since Haru 2010; let's hope he continues his resurgence. Also in the promotion zone, but for the first time, is Chiyootori who just continues to race up the banzuke - in his last four basho he has gone 20-8 and moved up more than 80 ranks. Hakunishiki and Kotofukuju join the list as expected, and last basho's absent Saishin has returned to action, so we're competing at full strength this month. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted July 11, 2011 And the extended list - here I underestimated just how agressive the Kyokai would be in promoting rikishi from sandanme, so I missed two upcoming debuts in my Natsu roundup. Joining Masumiura and Otakayama for Nagoya are 21-year-old Komanokuni, the first Shibatayama-beya to reach makushita in eight years, and Otake-beya rikishi Genkaiho who at 23 years of age doesn't have quite that much prospect shine left. Here, too, we have two rikishi in the running for promotion with perennial prospect Kyokushuho and last year's college entrant Chiyozakura, both sitting at Ms2. The similarly-named, similarly-aged (born 7 days apart) but otherwise completely different (weights: 119 kg and 193 kg) pair of Asahisho and Hishofuji have also set new high ranks in the promotion zone, surrounding Ms11e Tochiyashiki (another 7 days older) who nearly held his rank following a Natsu 3-4. With the juryo upheavals likely to continue for a few more basho, a strong result this month could open up a good promotion opportunity for the next few tournaments. Skinny Mongolian Torugawa and bottom-ranked Ota will turn 24 after the basho and leave the list, so here's hoping they get to exit on a high note. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) Nagoya 2011 summary: Nobody except injury returnee Saishin exceeded five wins this time, but also nobody except struggling Kotokensei fell below the 3-win mark - and most importantly, our top two members Chiyoarashi and Kotoyuki are set to graduate! (I am not worthy...) (A yokozuna...) We're still about 24 hours from the official announcement, but with all the juryo spots on offer due to the divisional re-expansion it's a certainty that they'll be promoted. Chiyoarashi being the younger of the two, he becomes the new yardstick for this thread, leaving only 6 incumbents in the major prospect list. It's even more impressive for a middle school starter like Tatsu of course - he'll be the youngest rikishi with makushita experience by more than a year and a half on the Aki banzuke - but even for a high schooler like Motoi such rapid progress is nothing to sneeze at. Looks like the introductory accolades for both were justified. Kotoeko took only eight basho as well, albeit to sandanme. Following that it has now taken him three full years to go one division higher, but that might have to be expected for a guy as undersized as him (barely over 100 kg at 175 cm). Kokonoe-beya's Mongolian Chiyoshoma weighs even less while being taller, so being in makushita after two years is quite a feat. People looking for the next Takanoyama, perhaps here's your guy. His competitive profile seems to be what Randomitsuki would term an all-arounder - throws are prominently represented as should be expected from someone of his size, but yori moves, slapdowns and a gaggle of more exotic techniques all feature on his kimarite list to this point. Lastly, Kotokobai may have been at it for over 5 years already, but with a birthday of March 31 he was the youngest shindeshi of his class, debuting in maezumo before turning 15. As such taking two and a half years to sandanme and the same time again to reach makushita isn't a big problem as he's still just 20 years old. His weight has come along nicely, going from an initial (and probably not fully athletic) 111 kg to about 15 kg more, which ought to be enough to hold his own in low makushita soon. Given the yardstick shift from Masunoyama to Chiyoarashi only Kotoeko, Tatsu and Chiyoshoma will be making it into the first tier, while Kotokobai and Chiyoo will go into a reconfigured second tier, but more on that after the next post. BTW, are all these majorly talented Kokonoe deshi with debut dates of 2006 and later Chiyotaikai recruitings? Edited July 25, 2011 by Asashosakari
Asashosakari 20,276 Posted July 25, 2011 And speaking of talented Kokonoe rikishi, here's the extended club where yet another of them has earned his juryo promotion this basho. :-D Collegiate entrant Chiyozakura will be joined on the way up by forum hype recipient Kyokushuho - how coincidental that aderechelsea has returned just now ;-) - and most likely also by heavyweight Hishofuji from underrated Nakamura-beya. (Is Hoshifransu still around? He'll like this kid - over 190 cm tall, over 190 kg in weight.) I've been tracking his career since back in the day when Kinta was cracking wise at his surname, so seeing him make it is personally satisfying, too. :-) All in all, the list is fairly devoid of extreme results, besides Hishofuji's 6-1 only two more rikishi scored outside the 2-5 to 5-2 corridor: list debutant Masumiura found the makushita air a little overwhelming and punched an 0-7 ticket to end a string of 7 straight KK, while formely impressive Tamadaiki (makushita debut for his 20th birthday, but not much progress in the three years since) returned from missing the May basho with a 6-1. Due to the success cleanout likely none of the remaining guys from this list will be ranked in the makushita single digits, so there's no immediate contender for promotion next time. Paging Gusoyama, you're his adopter from back then. ;-) I think I'll start rooting for him, although getting to makushita at age 22 will make it an uphill battle to reach the kesho'ed ranks. In any case, with the two lists getting more and more lopsided in size due to the many very young sekitori debutants of the last year, I've decided to reconfigure things a bit. Tier 1 will continue to be the kids who are in line to become the reigning youngest sekitori, Tier 2 will be deshi age 21 and under, and Tier 3 the rest at age 23 and under. I think that's also going to make it a little more apparent which guys among those on the currently huge second list are still big-time prospects (which they surely are before they turn 22), and which rikishi have already lost a little bit of their shine. Thanks for reading if you are, back with the updated Heisei Hopefuls before Aki basho. (Bye, bye...)
Randomitsuki 2,904 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) Kokonoe-beya's Mongolian Chiyoshoma weighs even less while being taller, so being in makushita after two years is quite a feat. The comparison between Chiyoshoma and Takanoyama is quite apt, but I would rather term them both nage specialists. Actually, there are only a handful of rikishi on the banzuke with more than 10 wins in their career and a higher percentage of throwing kimarite. Here are the top 7: Yamanaka 86% Kamei 81% Kyokutaisei 72% Hakunishiki 68% Daitoken 67% Takanoyama 66% Chiyoshoma 57% Thanks for the updates! Fay 1,677 Posted July 26, 2011 I'm extremely happy about the promotion from Chiyoarashi. I follow his career from the very beginning. Every time I was at Kokonoe I saw him working very hard and he impressed me. He is a very short guy, I hope he can stay in Juryo or get even higher. And here he is in his beginnings ... Asashosakari 20,276 Posted August 30, 2011 Heisei Hopefuls for Aki 2011: I'm pretty happy with the revised 3-tiered setup, and I hope you will, too. At the very least it'll be easier to focus on individual performances when each table holds at most around 25 names, instead of nearly 50. Starting off with the top tier of those who are younger than our newest sekitori yardstick, Chiyoarashi: With nobody in direct contention for a juryo debut, Aki will be somewhat of a consolidation and regrouping basho in all three tiers, so the most exciting reason to watch the top table is surely the arrival of the Great Japanese Hope, Takadagawa-beya's Tatsu. Now aged 17 years and 3 months he's the youngest makushita debutant since Hagiwara (now Kisenosato), who of course serves as a bit of a cautionary tale about having extremely high expectations of teenage rikishi. In fact, the next-youngest debutant in between does, too: Tatsu's stablemate Ryuden was only a few weeks older on his own debut three years ago, and due to a combination of injuries and lack of physical development (read: weight gain) hasn't come nearly as far as was expected at the time. FWIW, I've watched most of Tatsu's matches in the last two basho (hurray for the lower-division stream), and even at nearly 150 kg he has looked downright skinny compared to many older opponents. In other words, he seems to carry his weight really well on his 193 cm frame and ought to have lots and lots of room to grow his body. I think (well, I hope) that bodes well for a steady progression through the makushita division - perhaps we'll see him in sekitoriland by early 2013? Tatsu is joined in newcomerdom by representatives of the two big sources for young talent right now, Sadogatake's Kotoeko (until recently named Kotokashiwadani) and Kokonoe's Mongolian Chiyoshoma. Both hovering around the 100 kg mark they're nevertheless quite different rikishi types, with Chiyoshoma seemingly following the nage-centric Takanoyama mold (see discussion above), while Kotoeko's competitive profile reminds me more of Kotonishiki - he's about the same height (around 175 cm), and his kimarite distribution features large numbers of both yorikiri and oshidashi, indicating a high-speed approach to his sumo. The tier is headed by another rikishi from the Kokonoe talent factory in Chiyootori. Coming off a respectable 3-4 record after a big 6-1 jump, this basho should provide a better indication of whether he's already competitive at makushita-joi heights. #2 Saishin will also be interesting to watch in his second go-around in mid-makushita after the first one was stopped short by injury. He's 18-3 in his last three sandanme appearances, so it ought to be time for his first makushita kachikoshi. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted August 30, 2011 Tier 2: Speaking of Ryuden, he has now dropped into the second age bracket after Chiyoarashi's promotion, and finds himself in the lead position here despite scoring a makekoshi in July. It remains to be seen how much longer he'll be able to hold off the charging Tatsu. Of particular interest here should be the (you might have guessed it) two Kokonoe rikishi - Chiyomaru comes off three straight kachikoshi that have brought him from sandanme to near the makushita high ranks, while heralded high schooler Chiyoo (formerly Motoi) is in just his 9th professional tournament and already in mid-makushita. And Takanoiwa could be worth keeping an eye on; if his ligament injury is fully healed he might be able to run roughshod over the upper sandanme crowd. Other than that, just pick your favourites. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted August 30, 2011 (edited) And lastly, Tier 3, featuring the overall highest-ranked Hopeful of Aki basho in Asahisho. This tier looks very competitive going forward, and currently no less than 11 rikishi are ranked inside a 20-rank corridor (Ms12 to Ms31). Two of them won't be part of the festivities much longer, however, as Ryuonami and Nankairiki are turning 24 before Kyushu basho and thus make their final appearance in this thread. With the 21-and-under crowd separated from these guys now, nobody really stands out on this table, but I guess that's the nature of the beast when we look at a bunch of rikishi who have already lost a bit of their prospect shine but who could still turn themselves into servicable sekitori mainstays. (I kind of wonder what such a list would have looked like 5 years ago and how the various rikishi went on.) My two picks for attention are Higoarashi who's on a 5-KK streak, and Dewanoumi's lightweight Mongolian deshi Dewahayate who, after bouncing around in high sandanme for two years, has suddenly found a new gear and bumped himself up to the upper makushita ranks with a combined 14-7 record this year. Should be interesting to see if both rikishi can keep things moving in the right direction. Asashosakari 20,276 Posted August 31, 2011 I'm also watching Dewahayate, but ... a little nitpicking .. he's not mongolian. Oh, wow...I'm sure that's not the first time I've made that mistake, at least in my mind if not in writing. Thanks for the correction!
