Andreas21 183 Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) Takayasu is now on the brink of Sanyaku, he's in if he wins against Tochiozan and Mogiryu loses. At least he is at a career high at M1. Edited January 27, 2013 by Andreas21
Asashosakari 18,959 Posted February 4, 2013 (edited) Hatsu results... Tier 1: Another good basho for our top talents even if we're no closer to finding a new youngest sekitori. The top performance of Hatsu was obviously Masunosho's 6-1, an impressive turnaround from the 3-4 in Kyushu that ended a 6-KK streak, and it's now safe to say that - barring injury - we're looking at a future makuuchi regular here, if not even more. Masunosho still isn't especially heavy, but he has a confident, measuredly aggressive style (think Goeido on his good days) that may well play even in the makushita-joi already despite the lack of weight. If you haven't watched his Hatsu bouts yet, I highly recommend it. Tatsu is likely losing his top spot on the list to Masunosho after his 3-4, but his basho performance did have a silver lining: In my impression, he has now overcome one of his two major issues, namely his previous lack of sheer horsepower compared to the upper makushita regulars (which always looked odd for somebody with such a huge frame). He's no longer getting overwhelmed in the Ms10's, but on the flip side that has served to highlight his other problem: He frequently looks a bit clueless out there. Perhaps it's just a lack of experience - after all, he was always able to rely on his size in his amateur junior days and didn't need much dohyo smarts - but I suspect it may also be a case of him not being a particularly intuitive sumotori. It remains to be seen how quickly ex-Akinoshima can fix that in his deshi. Moving on to the other two rikishi high on the list who went MK...Daieisho had an okay makushita debut in the middle of the division, and 2 wins is probably what was to be expected at this level. The one-year rookie ought to have found his station for now and the hard work starts here; he does look pretty raw to me despite his extensive high school amateur background as a Saitama Sakae grad, so he's probably not headed further up straight away. Akinokawa went 3-4 to continue his mid-makushita holding pattern of the last 12 months, ever since he jumped to this level in last year's Hatsu basho. On the upside, anything that's not regression is good news at this young age. The remaining five makushita denizens of this tier went 4-3 all around, and as four of them were at or near their career-high ranks that's certainly good news as well. Particularly nice here were Meisei's division debut KK and Mitoyutaka's sophomore KK (after already KK'ing in his own debut last time). Sasanoyama's minimum KK was a bit disappointing at this low rank, but following an injury absence there's of course always the question of how recovered he really is and/or how much practice time he's managed to get in after recovering. Aonosho will be staging his return to the third division for Haru basho after going 5-2, which is nice to see as the previous promotion was of the non-standard type with a zensho from the Sd90's and it's always a bit questionable how good such a rikishi really is. In fact, Kotodaigo seems to be having exactly that issue as he's struggling to return to makushita after his initial move to the division (after Sd43w 7-0Y in Hatsu 2012) didn't work so well. Goshi also looks to need a bit more sandanme time even if his own trip to makushita came "only" after a 6-1. Much heavier and much more technically limited, Akinoyama was left behind by his brother in mid-sandanme three years ago and is only now catching up to him again (and in fact will likely take the slightly higher ranking for Haru). I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he's in for a rude awakening next time and goes 1-6 or something, there are just too many holes in his sumo to be exploited by established makushita denizens. But he's 20 and in makushita so it's certainly possible for him to turn into something. Kaidonami is almost exactly the opposite type of rikishi, a short but fairly well-built rikishi (probably more like 115-120 kg now than the DB's 108) who engages in aggressive Yoshikaze-in-his-prime type tsuki-oshi in nearly every bout. Fun to watch and should be able to hold his own in lower makushita before too long, although perhaps not yet in March. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted February 4, 2013 Tier 2:It didn't happen this basho, but it sure looks like we'll see at least one sekitori debut out of this group soon. Kawanari's first foray into the promotion zone went better than expected and he will probably be only another 4-3 away from juryo on the next banzuke. He'll be getting company in the top five ranks by the talented Kokonoe pair of Chiyoo and Chiyomaru who confirmed their qualification for the high makushita ranks with KKs...a Kokonoe trio actually, as injury returnee Chiyoarashi would also be part of this tier if he didn't already have juryo experience. The most noteworthy result underneath the top 3 was posted by Osunaarashi who continues to search for his personal wall. Also encouraging was Tochimaru's 4-3 in his division debut, especially as he's the youngest in this section. On the other hand last basho's surprise zensho scorer Daijo, the third tier debutant besides Osunaarashi and Tochimaru, found makushita to be the expected tough going and went 1-6.Promising high school grad Saishin continued his holding pattern in the Ms10's with another 3-4, and hopefully he'll be spurred on to a breakout by stablemate Masunosho catching up to him. Wakamisho went 5-2 and will return to near his previous career high, while Kotokobai and Chiyoshoma had okay 3-4's at their highest ranks. Kotoeko scored a 5-2 in high sandanme and will return to makushita to hopefully follow up on the two good tournaments he had there in Aki and Kyushu (where he lost his bid to stay in the division only in the final bout).Kotokensei sadly didn't do much in his final basho here and will drop to Tier 3 as somebody who already looks like he won't merit much attention during his last two "prospect years" on that list, either. Maybe he'll surprise us. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted February 25, 2013 Oops, time to finish up with the rest.Tier 3:A very good basho for our third-level prospects with many KK and very few scores worse than 3-4. Kyushu yusho winner Nishikigi acquitted himself admirably, collecting three wins while facing 6 rikishi with recent juryo experience. A strong 6-1 performance also by another former makushita yusho winner, Kairyu, who looks like he's going to settle in the makushita-joi now and perhaps will even be in juryo before too long.6-1's were also scored by Hokaho, continuing his steady rise of the last year and a half into the top 15 ranks for Haru basho, as well as lanky Dewahayate (in his last basho at Tier 3) and rather differently-sized Mankajo (in his first good basho in 12 months).Kyushu sandanme champion Takageppo found upper makushita tough going again, just like a year ago, and will have to regroup closer to the middle of the division. His twin brother Takatoshi on the other hand posted his 4th KK in a row and will be ahead on the next banzuke again. MK-free collegiate Iwasaki started hot with three wins but ended up just 4-3, albeit with the losses coming against Hokaho, strong Osunaarashi and unorthodox Kyokutaisei, which is no shame.Speaking of the latter, he finished with a good 5-2 near his career-high rank and while he's still a bit of a longshot, I would no longer be surprised to see the former judo practitioner in juryo in a few years as he slowly seems to be adopting a more traditional style, and is managing to demonstrate he doesn't need to rely on crazy legtrips and throws to survive in mid-makushita.Lastly, worth highlighting are the 4-3's by recent makushita debutants Sasayama and Nogami, their first in the division (Nogami even achieving it at his career high), and by Byakko who is riding a 5-KK streak. Dewahayate had a fine departure basho and he'll probably return as part of Tier 4 in the future, while the other three makushita inhabitants Mugendai, Asabenkei and Tochinohama all finished 3-4 in Hatsu. All four are longshots for juryo, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of them makes it after all - I won't wager a guess who. Down in sandanme Okoryu and Kenho are also saying goodbye, but with KK scores. I'm reasonably sure they're not sekitori material, though.Speaking of rikishi carrying question marks, there's one new arrival for Haru basho: Rikishi Heya DOB Debut HiRk 2012.03 2012.05 2012.07 2012.09 2012.11 2013.01 Hamaguchi Kise 1989/07/11 2012.05 Sd7 Jk16w 7-0 D Jd10w 7-0 D Sd18e 4-3 Sd7e 7-0 Y I've voiced my opinion on Hamaguchi before (1, 2, 3) so...either I'm right and this sandanme 7-0 will turn out to be a massive fluke, or I'm wrong and Hamaguchi is the second coming of Sakaizawa, looking unimpressive in most bouts but winning anyway. Either way, Haru basho will be a huge test for him.
Asashosakari 18,959 Posted February 25, 2013 Tier 4: It's old news by now, but for the second basho in a row this tier came through to provide us with a reasonably promising juryo debutant. Tochihiryu is already turning 26 in two months (which would have spelled the end of his tenure on this thread), but I do believe he'll be a worthwhile addition to the salaried ranks, given that his development had progressed pretty quickly and he merely struggled to take the final step. He first reached the upper half of makushita in Haru 2010 (at age 22) and never fell back out of it, and likewise never fell back out of the top 15 ranks after first reaching them for Natsu 2011. In fact, going back to Hatsu 2011 he somehow managed to alternate KK and MK scores every basho, which naturally makes it difficult to reach juryo. ;-) The 6-1 in Hatsu basho impressively broke that streak. The rest of the tier was a very mixed bag, from Seiro collecting a good 4-3 kachikoshi to earn a second stab at the promotion zone, to Watanabe scoring an unprecedented second consecutive 0-7 (certainly looking injured this time around though). Karatsuumi also looked rather terrible, beating only Watanabe during the basho. Tier debutant Fukugoriki's 3-4 was expected at his career high, as was Ryuonami's 5-2 (well off his career high). Asashosakari 18,959 Posted May 18, 2013 And I still owe the Haru results...sigh. Well, here we go in abbreviated form:Tier 1:Not the most stellar basho for our top prospects, although Masunosho's 3-4 at a rank far beyond his previous range has to rate as encouraging. The star performance of the basho was arguably Kaidonami's 5-2 in his makushita debut, coming off a big 6-1 jump no less. Terutsuyoshi finally produced a breakout 6-1 performance in lower makushita. Other than that the most notable results were probably Akinoyama's 3-4 in his debut (also after 6-1), and Goshi securing a makushita return in style with 6 wins. Sasanoyama improved on his Hatsu 4-3 in his second basho back from injury, but for a rikishi who was already competitive around Ms20, a 5-2 at Ms50 is little more than an expected step in the right direction. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted May 18, 2013 Tier 2: An extremely mixed bag here. The good: Chiyoo securing his juryo debut and needing only two appearances in the promotion zone for it, and Wakamisho and Osunaarashi heading for the single-digit ranks with strong performances. The bad (and also ugly): Kawanari getting completely bombed at Ms1 after looking quite good in January, and once highly-regarded Sasakiyama continuing to stall in mid-makushita, this time even going 2-5 at some distance from his highest rank. Chiyomaru going 3-4 was also a bit disappointing, no less because the MK-clinching loss at 2-3 came against craptacular juryo demotee Hochiyama. Could have been worse for a first zone appearance though, so let's just hope he bounces back quickly. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted May 18, 2013 (edited) Tier 3: Lots of 'meh' here, at least at first glance, the big exception being Endo's debut 5-2 to demonstrate that he's got what it takes (unless you're somebody who expected him to zensho, I guess). On the good side of meh-ness we have 4-3's at career-high ranks for Hamaguchi, Takatoshi, Kyokutaisei and Nogami, and arguably also hefty Higoarashi's 5-2 (however, he's bounced around this area for a year and a half already) which will bring him above Ms10 for the first time. Hokaho's 3-4 after a 6-1 boost into the extended promotion zone also was one of the more encouraging results. Very much meh were the 2-5's by Nishikigi and Kairyu though, both continuing to struggle as soon as they're hitting the single-digit ranks. Noteworthy KKs further down include Mankajo's 4-3 (near career high) and Kansei's 5-2 (at a re-attained career high). These two have also been bouncing around for a while though, so these results are more of a "well, it's about time" thing. (Over-?)Hyped collegiate rikishi Iwasaki ran into the wall in mid-makushita with a 3-4, perhaps showing that his at the time disappointing 4-3 in January wasn't just a fluky bad (well, mediocre) result but actually indicative of his current level. Takamisato would probably score highly on Randomitsuki's "rikishi averageness" measures at about 180 cm / 130 kg and a kimarite profile that's almost exactly average other than being a bit higher on nage and a bit lower on oshi than the mean rikishi. Tokushuzan by contrast is more the short and stocky oshi type, winning his bouts with oshidashi more than half the time. He already turns 24 during Natsu basho and will be with us for only one basho. Toyononami only took a little over two years to makushita (never scoring worse than 3-4), but he was already 20 when he turned pro so this kind of progression is also needed if he wants to go for a sekitori career. Equipped with a body that was already pretty well developed on joining and hasn't changed much since then (except for more muscles, one would hope) he's another rikishi with a fairly well-rounded arsenal, though his main approach from what I've seen is to put pressure on his opponents with forceful oshi, supported by well-timed slapdowns and defensive throws if the pushing doesn't do it. Not the worst combination, actually. He might be one to watch, despite entering only in Tier 3. And last not least there's Oazuma who was probably expected to get here much earlier, having been in upper sandanme already 4+ years ago, but repeated injuries did him in and so he's appearing in makushita only now, turning 23 right before the Natsu shonichi. His talent is undeniable and he still has an excellent framework at 196 cm of height, but one does have to wonder how much mileage the various injuries have put on it. He's big on both yori and and uwatenage, so should appeal to fans of classical sumo. Edited May 18, 2013 by Asashosakari
Asashosakari 18,959 Posted May 18, 2013 Tier 4: Well, we already know that Seiro didn't make it through the banzuke committee (I'd rather have had him than Homasho...), but his result still makes me hopeful that he's going to get to juryo eventually, perhaps as soon as Natsu basho. Good results for Fukugoriki and Ryuonami as well, each scoring well enough to (spoiler warning ;-)) narrowly make it to new high ranks. On the other hand, Karatsuumi's 4-3 well below his career high isn't much to write home about, and Watanabe continues to sink like a rock. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted May 19, 2013 Natsu 2013, Tier 2: This is pretty much the Osuna & Waka Show now as the two foreign prospects occupy the top spots after the departures of Chiyoo (to juryo) and Chiyomaru (to Tier 3). I sure hope somebody up in Tier 1 will make it to juryo before Chiyootori turns 22 and this section becomes just a void...

Asashosakari 18,959 Posted June 25, 2013 Late again...here are the Natsu results. Tier 1: It's a cavalcade of 4-3's and 3-4's here in the top section, the notable exceptions being Sasanoyama's accelerating return from injury and Daieisho's impressive bounceback from getting demoted out of makushita. Pretty good results as well by the top two in the list though, regardless of the unspectacular numbers, with Terutsuyoshi collecting three wins after a big 6-1 jump and Kaidonami achieving four victories after only a slightly smaller 5-2 promotion - KK at a new high rank is always a good sign, and Kaidonami has done it back-to-back now. Goshi also reached the three-win mark after a large promotion, but having started the basho late he profited from a softer than usual schedule. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted June 25, 2013 (edited) Tier 2: Osunaarashi made short work of his time in upper makushita, earning his kesho at the first opportunity. His frequent keiko partner Wakamisho also produced an impressive 6-1 performance to put himself in spitting distance to juryo as well. All in all an excellent basho for this tier, marred primarily by Saishin's 2-5, his first in nearly three years - so much for my hope that he might break out of his KK-MK alternating pattern. Also rating on the unpleasant side is Kotofukuju's MK, his third in a row. On the other hand, Kawanari bounced back strongly from his disappointing makushita-hitto showing in March, and Sasakiyama did what Daieisho did one level higher, channeling his demotion frustration into an excellent basho in high sandanme. The other one is Matsubayama who is the occasional example of somebody who qualifies in the framework of one tier but doesn't get to join it due to an intervening birthday, so he'll make his thread debut down in Tier 3 as well. I don't quite know what to make of the Kasugayama youngster anyway - his kimarite profile is pretty average in the "popular" techniques, but he has augmented it with a penchant for tsukidashi (that's not so unusual), tsuridashi (!) and utchari (!!) - although this might just be a historical artifact from his low-ranked early days as his last lift-out win was in Hatsu 2011 and his last utchari even further back in Hatsu 2009. He's coming into makushita off a 6-1 and he just went 1-6 in high sandanme right before, so he might not be too ready yet in any case. The prospect who's actually going to join us up here at the second level is Isegahama-beya's Tomisakae, who has to deal with the least fixable disadvantage in Ozumo, namely being pretty darn short. Like many untall rikishi he compensates for it by being a hyperaggressive pusher, oshidashi+oshitaoshi accounting for an astounding almost 75% of his victories. When finding himself on the other end of a bout he's unsurprisingly very vulnerable to slapdown techniques with those being responsible for about half of his losses. He's pretty fun to watch, at any rate, although I have my doubts as to how far he'll be able to go. More weight will definitely be needed, otherwise he'll eventually run into opponents who are both larger and know what to do with their size, and will simply neutralize his pushing. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted June 25, 2013 Tier 3: Collegiate top prospect Endo can count himself lucky to have earned promotion to the sekitori ranks with the unusually crunched situation in low juryo and high makushita, but the records of his first two professional basho leave little doubt that he's ready. Chiyomaru continues to show that he's pretty close to juryo-worthy as well and will probably be going up sooner rather than later. Tier 3 is lacking the spectacular results of the upper two sections, but Natsu was still an extremely profitable tournament for these guys with those ranked in the upper half of makushita going 10-for-13 in KKs, and no less than 8 of them will be at new career-highs in Nagoya. Among them Hamaguchi and Higoarashi are the most noteworthy for now as they'll get to make their promotion zone debuts. Few results really stand out below Ms30 with most KK rikishi being quite a way off their high ranks. The sole exception is massive Komanokuni who needed almost two years to get back for his second shot at makushita after a debut 3-4, but made the best of it with 5 wins. From among the others I'd like to highlight Chiyosakae, the "forgotten" prospect from the star-studded Hatsu 2009 class who nevertheless continues to move up steadily and might well be joining Azumaryu/Takanoiwa/Tokushoryu/Takarafuji/Kimikaze as a kesho owner eventually. (And that class includes Nogami and the Taka[geppo|toshi] twins as well...oh my. 5 sekitori already ties it for the best post-1973 Hatsu class with 1996 and 2007, and there's a realistic chance it'll break the post-WWII Hatsu record of 6 sekitori set by the 1952 and 1957 classes.) (The latter was in line for an exit from the thread anyway, and Tokizakura after Nagoya.) Iwasaki will probably make a reappearance in Tier 4 at some point.
