Heisei Hopefuls - prospect watch

Tier 4:

Seiro wasn't deterred by his unlucky non-promotion after Haru and takes the well-deserved step into the salaried ranks now. Tier newcomer Dewahayate also produced a KK performance, but the rest was a case of the less said, the better - Ryuonami's 3-4 at his career-best rank has to rate as a success in that context, although it's slowly becoming a case of too little, too late for the Mongolian who already turns 26 in September.

Nagoya 2013, Tier 1:

For the first time in 10 months some top talents are ranked in the extended promotion zone. Sasanoyama might even be a darkhorse for a 7-0, there are a lot of Kise rikishi in the top 7 ranks which could make Sasanoyama's schedule easier from 4-0 on if one of them also starts with a winning streak. Top-ranked Daieisho on the other hand will probably find things to be tough going at this level.

Tatsu is on a three-basho slide and has dropped halfway through the division in the course of it. About time for a turnaround...

So, Takayasu finally is the first Heisei born Sanyaku! I'm happy for him.

He also broke his pattern in-and-out of Jo-i, and got a very respectable score which would have got him directly to Sekiwake in luckier circumstances. He seems very far from reaching the next level, but also very far from a one-hit-wonder.

I just noticed that he did not miss a single bout in his carreer, very unlike other Heisei contenders like Masunoyama and Chiyootori. Avoiding injuries may be the main reason for his success as he is not the man of any signature winning technique/trick. He is good at several things but none of them is outstanding. In fact, his recent run is inconspicuous as it can be, and so is his fighting style. It can be said to be the absence of any major weakness coupled with fighting spirit. He is so gradually improving that it is not easily noticed. That can bring him very far.

In fact he is very far above other Heisei born rikishi. Chiyonookuni, Masunoyama and Chiyootori are highly talented as well but hampered by their own conditions/injuries. Kotoyuki will be the number two next time (among Heisei born), but will find it very hard to climb higher with his weaknesses, he is so vulnerable to throws and pulls which the stronger guys can easily utilize. Endo and Osunaarashi will come next but it is in the stars how they can survive in Makuuchi - Takayasu has learned that for two years. Takanoiwa hit the wall in top Juryo, he will need time to figure out how to fight the stronger guys there. He has obviously a high spirit so he may eventually find out.

Wakamisho will have his Sekitori debut. He is tall, strong and heavy and has learned to use that better recently. He has a great streak - we will see where it ends. I reckon that it be the top of Juryo very soon - I guess there will be a big accumulation of Heisei born rikishi in this region, together with Asahisho and Daikiho.

Another accumulation will probably in bottom Juryo/top Makushita: Chiyomaru, Chiyoo, Chiyoarashi, NIshikigi and Kawanari.

Playing catch-up again...

Tier 1:

As has become the norm here, the best performance of the section came from an unexpected corner - Arashio-beya talent Goshi walked away with a low-rank makushita yusho, even beating a makushita-joi opponent in the final bout. Meanwhile, the highest-ranking five rikishi all went MK. All of them were at or near their career highs, so it's not entirely surprising, but disappointing regardless. Personally, I'd have to rate Daieisho's 3-4 (after a big 7-0 jump from upper sandanme) as the most encouraging result among these, while Sasanoyama's 2-5 fell far short of what I expected. (See "darkhorse yusho contender" prediction above...) There wasn't a whole lot to celebrate elsewhere either, with Mitoyutaka's 4-3 near his career high already the second-best Tier 1 result after Goshi.

A bit disappointing for me Kotodaigo, I expect much more from him. Next basho fingers crossed and high expectations for him and Meisei.

Tier 2:

The second talent level was headed both in rank and in performance by Wakamisho whose 6-1 secured his long-awaited juryo debut, henceforth to be known as Terunofuji.

Kawanari was the only other one in the upper half of makushita to score a kachikoshi, but three lower-ranked talents (Kotoeko, Tochimaru and Tomisakae) did enough to secure new high ranks.

After starting his career 14-0 Wakayama has taken an interesting route from sandanme to makushita, with 6 MK and only 4 KK, but all of those were 5-2 or better. Nevertheless he has yet to kachikoshi above Sd42, so his chances for immediate makushita success probably aren't the greatest. In both physique and style he's reminiscent of Takekaze on his good days (i.e. minus the pulling tendencies), although he's already nearly as heavy as the makuuchi veteran and will probably end up more in Toyonoshima's weight range eventually.

Tier 3:

And here, too, we have a brand-new juryo denizen after Chiyomaru secured his kachikoshi from the top makushita rank. Kairyu almost followed him with a low-ranked zensho, but wasn't able to beat Tier 1 Goshi in the yusho decider. Everybody in between them went MK so we're not going to have a lot of promotion contenders next time.

Kyokutaisei posted an impressive 6-1 record as the former judo practitioner's sumo continues to mature, while heavyweight Kansei posted a 5-2 to continue a 4-KK streak and former top prospect Sasakiyama (freshly back from being banished to sandanme) also collected 5 wins. Tochinosato, the former Ms4-ranked Kasugano prospect, posted his first big score since returning from injury three tournaments ago and will finally be back to makushita competition.

Lots of changes coming in this tier as well: Five rikishi have turned 24 during the summer, and while Hamaguchi, Higoarashi, Byakko and Tochinosato had already done enough to buy themselves two more years in Tier 4, Kansei needed his Nagoya 5-2 to make it. In addition, Mihogaseki-beya's Masumiura decided to end his career, potentially beating the demise of his stable by only a few months.

Two newcomers will reinforce the depleted ranks:

Not much to say about Ishiura, I'm sure most people reading this thread have followed his exploits since he turned pro in January. His reportedly excellent work ethic notwithstanding, it remains to be seen how far his extremely unorthodox fighting style will take him.

Shibahara on the other hand comes in with rather less fanfare, and will only have two basho here on the prospect list as he already turns 24 in November; unlikely enough time to reach the top 15 ranks (and I doubt he'll make it into Tier 4 later either). I'd say something about his preferred techniques as a courtesy here but the DB has taken a leave of absence while I was typing this...

Aki 2013, Tier 2:

It has finally happened, Tier 2 has shrunk below the size of Tier 1. One year left until both levels merge, unless somebody in the top group finally gets himself to juryo...

No major storylines in here this time around, I guess of the most interest might be how Wakayama does in his debut, and whether Tomisakae can continue his 5-KK streak.

Aki 2013, Tier 3:

Probably the section with the most credible promotion contender for Aki basho. Kairyu has been resident in the upper half of makushita for the last year and a half, posting a 7-0 and two 6-1's in that span. He's kept us waiting for the final breakthrough though; in two previous attempts at the single-digit ranks he finished twice 2-5. Will this be the time he takes the next step?

Aki 2013, Tier 4:

Now featuring a dirty dozen of still-hopefuls. Top-ranked Dewahayate is riding a 5-KK streak from the bottom of the division, and I'm rooting for him to keep going. Irie has also put together 4 KKs on the trot and makes his debut in the single-digit area. Tochinosato further down will merit attention as well - if his 6-1 last time was an indication that he's fully healthy again, the former makushita high-ranker should prove too strong for the middle of the division.

It's the last call for Ryuonami who is 26 years old as of today and "officially" ends his time as a prospect. He wouldn't be the first Mongolian to achieve a late-blooming juryo debut if he makes it, but I for one can't see it happening. He just doesn't seem to excel at anything (charitable interpretation: doesn't have any really obvious weak spots), so would likely need to improve across the board and that's difficult to do at this stage of a sumo career.

Among the Heisei born sekitori ...

Takayasu Sanyaku debut was not particularly good, now at M3 he takes a step back

Endo half-injured at M7 is now seriously challenged

Kotoyuki at M10 looks very solid

Masunoyama at M11 even great, can he be the top heisei next time?

Osunaarashi gets beaten at M15 with a slight injury

Takanoiwa at J1 has another shot at Makuuchi debut

Chiyootori at J2 looks healthy again and may return to Makuuchi

Terunofuji at J3 could take a break in upper Juryo before rising further

Chiyonokuni at J3 since his bright Makuuchi debut he was injured and is not the same

Asahisho at J4 has recovered well and may return to Makuuchi

Chiyoo at J8 is rising steadily

Daikiho at J9 has lost the good momentum and is tumbling down

Chiyomaru at J13 needed last basho to get accustomed and is doing great so far

Long overdue catchup posts for the Aki basho results...

Tier 1:

A great result for Daieisho in his second basho in the makushita high ranks, while Goshi wasn't so fortunate after his big jump up the rankings. Sasanoyama whom I'd tabbed for a big basho instead struggled badly. Other noteworthy results: Mitoyutaka's KK at his career-high position, Terutsuyoshi's 5-2 (at Ms35 his highest-ranked KK so far) and Akinokawa's impressive 6-1 record.

Top prospect Onosho becomes the youngest rikishi in makushita and above. It's probably only a matter of time until he's a sekitori, although his somewhat height-challenged stature remains a question mark on his upside in my opinion. Hakuyozan is an already quite polished oshi-zumo rikishi and at just 18 years of age himself he too has to be counted as a big-time prospect - if it wasn't for the big knee support he's already sporting on his right leg. Last not least Takakasuga is a lanky Mongolian in the Ama mold, although with rather erratic sumo at times - I think he'll need some more seasoning before he's able to become a makushita mainstay.

Tier 2:

Not much to say here - Aiyama's first makushita KK and Kotoeko and Tomisakae's narrow 3-4's (final bout loss each...) at their career highs were arguably the highlights. Wakayama found makushita the expected tough going in his divisional debut.

Tier 3:

Big Kawanari had an excellent basho as he tries to go for another shot at the juryo debut. Even bigger Mankajo also posted his arguably career-best result. And on the other end of the physical spectrum Hakuho protegé Ishiura collected 5 wins as well as he continues to evade the wall.

Kairyu's second appearance in the promotion zone ended with him missing out on the promotion only in his final bout. Unfortunate...

He's a fairly small rikishi in the Takekaze mold, with the same "overwhelm or evade" mix of yori, oshi and hiki techniques. A longshot for a sekitori career, it's probably fair to say.

Tier 4:

5th straight KK for both Irie and Kansei, while Dewahayate didn't fare too well in the promotion zone. Fukugoriki continues the ranking recovery from his Natsu disaster.

Ryuonami said goodbye with a kachikoshi, but it wasn't the type of performance that should make one hopeful of a late-blooming sekitori career.

Collegiate semi-prospect Iwasaki narrowly reached the top 15 ranks with his 4-3 record. I still think that he'll become sekitori eventually, but won't be making any big waves. Nankairiki achieved the necessary result to join, but has turned 26 after Aki basho and so immediately aged out again.

Kyushu 2013, Tier 1:

Daieisho takes over the top spot and on his recent results he's probably the best bet as the next youngest sekitori now. Terutsuyoshi ties his career-best rank, Mitoyutaka and Akinokawa achieve new highs.

Kyushu 2013, Tier 2:

The second level is set to shrink again as Masunoumi, Kotoeko, Onami and Kotofukuju all turn 22. We're less than a year away from yardstick Chiyootori's own 22nd birthday, so unless somebody up in Tier 1 finally takes the step to juryo, we're eventually going to end up with Tier 2 completely empty.

Masunoumi heads this section for the first (and obviously also last) time.

Kyushu 2013, Tier 3:

Kawanari hopes for a better outcome than back in March. Besides him, Ishiura is probably the rikishi demanding the most attention again.

Daishoryu and Shibahara turn 24 and will have to hand in their prospect badges.

I have to say that the fact that even a year and a half after Chiyootori's promotion, he's still the youngest sekitori, speaks volumes about how extraordinary his achievement was.

And it seems that he'll remain the youngest for at the very least half a year or so (even more probably).
