Baruto needs yaocho lessons

Recommended Posts

Chiyotaikai should have made it easy on him by doing another henka. I'm sure Baruto with his inexperience was afraid of doing something to accidentally win such an important match.

Seeing Baruto's leg spring on the slow-motion replay, this is what I think:

- 70% chance the match was rigged. Considering that Baruto's relatively inexperienced, it's possible that he can't fake a fall very well either. I don't believe someone can jump so awkwardly in a direction opposite to the one he's being pushed.

- 30% chance Baruto was genuinely trying to compensate for the slap-down that was never finished, so he flew away in the other direction. Hard to believe, especially considering Chiyo's situation, but a faint possibility. And a funny one too.

30% is a bit generous to that option, don't you think (Neener, neener...) .

I was somewhere in between shaking my head with shame and laughing when I watched it. My roommate (not a follower of sumo) asked what was so funny, so I had him watch the replay. His response was "wow, it looked like the huge guy just jumped out." :-P

I never liked Chiyotaikai, but since he became sick and his career was on the line I actually started to become interested in him and cheer him on, but MAN was that some of the worst sumo I have ever witnessed... If Chiyo could have gone down fighting he would have left with a great career and I would have had a good feeling towards him forever. But now I'm not so sure...

You all piss me off and sumo pisses me off too (except the fact that the quality of sumo was very good this basho with a bunch of great stuff and techniques and fighiting spiritus!). And you are all dumb if you think rikishi need to act in bizarre ways to do yaocho or you have never done any real sports yourselves. It is ridiculously easy to defend well and even attack but just controlling the moves one bit not to win by accident. You can easily perform a head detachment tsuki in such way that it looks very genuine but just read the defender's position and control the power enough to make it easy enough to defend against that. Come on people...are you really saying that it is difficult? If so, you don't know what you are talking about. Shit. Life is full of crap and life is life.

Oh well it is all about th balance and tolerance of complete shit in sumou. Sumoforum rampage seems an apt procedure.

Before the match, when Taikai was still waiting in the hallway before walking down the hanamichi and he was laughing and joking with other wrestlers; looked as cool as a cucumber. No way a guy who seriously thought he was facing even the possibility of demotion would be that relaxed, especially considering his demeanor in previous matches. If we are talking about acting, Taikai himself could have affected a better lump in his throat..

He looked super calm on the dohyo as well. I guess I should revise my 70/30 number. It's more like 90/10

Btw, since the video was removed, if you look at the GIF, check out Chiyotaikai's right hand. It could be Jedi power.

.. and all is well with the world again. Ridiculous and pathetic cheating.

What I was concerned about was whether Baruto hurt himself with that stupid jump off the dohyo. Nobody falls like that on purpose, even on level ground. I realize that this basho was a poor one for him, but don't get silly and risk injury. He still needs to be good for July.

Having said that, this clip is one that is SO enjoyable to watch. Was glued to it for at least 5 minutes, thinking "How can this NOT be yaocho? Find a way to legitimize it." Nope. It's worthy of a Vince McMahon slapdown.

Baruto: "Oh god, I am winning, I am winning... I must do something, I must..."

*Jumps*

Still, I am not really convinced that Baruto did it on purpose.

He should've been under a great pressure, and maybe he wasn't sure if he really wants to win. Being uncertain may cause him to do some weird move :D Also, it is certain that many Chiyotaikai fans were chanting in their minds "Baruto, lose, Baruto, lose, Baruto, lose", although I'd prefer to believe they chanted "Chiyotaikai wins". He was affected by that black magic :( Ofc Baruto was doomed :-)

Baruto should try ice skating next. With a bit more training he'll complete the double-Rittberger.

It's worthy of a Vince McMahon slapdown.

Vince's trademark call from his commentating days seems oddly appropriate here: "What a maneuver!" (Holiday feeling...)

Incidentally, I enjoy pondering the fact that without the apparent screwup in the Osh-Taikai bout, every non-yusho'ing ozeki would have finished 8-7...

At first I thought that Chiyotaikai's Days 2-14 were actually competed and the Kyokutenho and Baruto bouts were rather embarassing.

However, I have just been reviewing DVR of the Baruto bout and this is the way I understand it:

It is known before the bout that Baruto has a bad right ankle. In any event he is clearly no longer competitive in the basho.

At tachiai Chiyotaikai applies a nodowa and stands up Baruto, who thens circles to Chiyotaikai's left.

As he attempts to complete this movement Baruto plants his right foot while his left foot is still in the air.

The right foot begins to roll inward (I believe this is called "pronation," but someone may correct me) in what seems is an unnatural and painful angle

and Baruto immediately lifts his right foot off the ground. At that point Baruto has no feet on the ground and has not be able to stop his circling

movement. This causes him to spin out of the ring virtually untouched. So, the bout was actually competed in a sporting manner.

It would seem that the choice to match Chiyotaikai against Baruto on the final day was a gift to Chiyotaikai.

Probably a better match would have been Kisenosato. A problem with that though, is Kisenosato would have to win to remain within reach of the yusho, however a win by Kisenosato would have demoted Chiyotaikai to sekiwake and would have prevented Kisenosato's possible promotion to sekiwake.

It looks like someone may have given both Chiyotaikai and Kisenosato a gift.

I just don't see how that would happen. A pain in the leg would cause it to give way, not jump along with the rest of the body. Plus Baruto wasn't in any pain just 5 seconds later when he walked back into the dohyo. The motion actually starts from his left arm and his torso, with both legs completing the piruette. It's a conscious movement directly away from the opponent and out of the ring. It'd actually be less embarrassing for Baruto to admit cheating than to admit he made such a clumsy move.

My charitable take on it is that Baruto was attempting a desperation, righthanded, roundhouse nodowa and was surprised when Taikai blocked it low with his left arm. Bart may have been expecting to end up with an okuri position. Or, to put it another way, Baruto telegraphed a clumsily executed sidestep, and Taikai caught him at it. Hey! Anything is possible!

From the other forum:

Welcome to Kyokai Sumo School of Dance.

Here is an example of the pirouette known world-wide as the Tuileriere De Baruto. Notice the fine example of footwork, the delicate pivot on the right foot which takes you into a full Fois Gras. The finish is a graceful Bombe a la Planchet.

This move can be made with or without a partner, and is widely recognized as one of the more difficult moves. This can occasionally be accompanied by another move, called Schmecking Dem Touchas Auf Der Menchen.

After viewing and reviewing the full captured NHK video of the match, the snip found here lacks a bit of perspective on what immediately preceded it. Baruto came out too high, and after the initial contact, Taikai did an inashi followed by a slap on the back of the head. This sent Baruto falling forward, and he did a spin to avoid a rapid exit. The clip picks up after Baruto starts his forward fall. When he completes his spin, Taikai is ready for him, and gave him a little bump to help him out. When viewed as a whole, it is an unbalanced Baruto trying unsucessfully to regain a fighting posture. I now vote "no yaocho."

Like the spin you're doing to avoid admitting that this match was not legit? (Holiday feeling...)
