Biggest bust...

Recommended Posts

Whom do you think was the biggest bust rikishi? The one with the highest potential, most praise early on, who just didn't pan out. Maybe due to injuries, or maybe other causes...

Kotonowaka, hands down... :-)

Oh, Konishiki had the biggest bust by far.

But despite this, I'm inclined to say that the biggest bust at least during the few years I have followed sumo, would be Kushimaumi, current Tagonoura-oyakata. As a college rikishi he broke ever amateur record there was, but in the pros he never even reached sanyaku

I'm not familiar with the story of Kushimaumi -- why didn't he make it higher?

Why didn't Kotonowaka? :-)

Seriously, I think Kushimaumi had a few injuries in his time, but essentially he simply didn't live up to his potential. He is supposed to be a really nice guy and I suppose that is not necessarily a good thing in sumo (Laughing...) But if anyone knows more, it'd be interesting to hear...

I seem to recall that Kotonowaka was seen as such a good prospect that he married the daughter of his oyakata and so was being groomed to take over Sadogatake. Not too sure though.

Well, it's good to be a nice guy at least  B-)

Well, maybe it didn't help him in his career as a rikishi, but an important reason why I like Kotonowaka so much, is that he is said to be such a nice guy. I like that kind of men: so big and strong they could crush you, but on the inside they are so kind and gentle they wouldn't even crush a spider :-)

Ehh.... this sounds exactly like a description of my hubby..... (Sigh...) (Heart)

Am I the only one who was disappointed when opening this thread, and finding out what the subject line REALLY meant?? (Sigh...)

Cheers!

Hayateumi. Light skillful rikishi with yotsu-magic

Knees, gout harrassed and down he went which was tragic

At the end of the tunnel no more bright sanyaku light visible

But still juryo yusho and promotion to makuuchi should be feasible

He had amazing yotsu-skills and good dose of power to go with it. That unexplained domination in many of his yotsu-bouts was something that never ceased to amaze me.

:-) HA HA!

I bet you thought it had something to do with Chiyotaikai's girlfriend...... (Protesting...)

Well, I wasn't *dissapointed*, but I did think the same. :-)

Kotonowaka and Hayateumi, huh? Two of my (Protesting...) I bring bad luck to my favourites! :-) (In love...)

I should have used clearer, less slang terms than a bust I suppose (Protesting...) Rikishi who's wasted potential was greatest... :-)

I must go dig up some old videos of Kotonowaka and see what the fuss is about...

I realize it might still be a little premature but my vote goes to Chiyotaikai. Or even Kaio. They are both such chokers that it's like watching a slow trainwreck to eventually being considered the greatest bust. Especially Chiyotaikai.

Colour me confused, but how does "dropping from Sekiwake down to Juryo for one basho after a series of injuries" equate with "most disappointing rikishi in recent history"? (In a state of confusion...)

Actually I didn't even limit my question to "recent" rikishi -- I purposely wanted to include as candidates rikishi from older times... (In a state of confusion...)

I agree 110 percent, absolutely.

I've been a sumo fan since I was a kid and a serious one since '86 and he's the one hyped rikishi that was groomed for the top. But he turned out to be an even bigger bust than Kotonowaka, who at least made sanyaku.

When I was a kid, there was this guy named Onishiki who won all the sansho in his makunouchi debut basho. His sophomore basho was at komusubi... It might have been his ONLY basho in sanyaku, for all I know.

Anyway, those are the two that come to mind.

Yes, of course, I should have thought of him (Applauding...)

I have a few old Japanese sumo magazines from the early 1970s filled with pictures of Onishiki, including those where he holds all sansho awards after his shin-nyumaku basho. And of course, that was pretty much the end of his career B-)

His komusubi basho was indeed his only sanyaku basho during a 15 year sekitori career. No more sansho either, but a bunch of Juryo yusho and Makunouchi promotions (4 Juryo yusho, 12 Makunouchi promotions)... I doubt that is what people thought after that spectacular shin-nyumaku basho. :-D

You've got old sumo video's? Lucky you! Try Nagoya basho 1996, the one I missed because the cable company stopped broadcasting Eurosport in that year B-) (Applauding...) He earned two kinboshi in that basho, against Akebono and Takanohana. Boy, I would have loved to see that...... :-D

Maybe not the end, but certainly the highlight. B-)
