Oh man, she got right up on the edge there! (thanx for the vid link Tikozan)

If Nish is correct regarding the rules, that's cause for a new episode of "pimp my dohyo".

Streakers in ozumo... Never thought about that possibility - but it seems it is just a matter of time:-)

this was of course irony, you always seem to have difficulties with it

Your "irony" always seems to go over my head.

Be so good as to tell me was your "technical" analysis of Gagamaru or the Kotooshu -v-Toyonoshima bout also ironic?

(In a state of confusion...)

Totally off topic - sorry

If you don't agree about Gagamaru, I don't care, but what did I say about the Kotooshu-Toyonoshima bout (In a state of confusion...)

In the video she did get up on the dohyo rather ponderously as if she didn't have proper control of her body. And her notebook looks like it has lots of scribbles and things. She probably just wanted to explain something to the guys up there.

When I worked in the Japanese embassy every week or so we'd get a letter written in different coloured inks and in circles etc. with diagrams of how Einstein and Newton got things wrong or how to build the super battleship.

I watched this unfold before my eyes and was astonished!! (In a state of confusion...) YIKES!!! (Shaking head...) That old gray haired guy was trying to pull that woman down from the dohyo by her leg and then Takamisakari was right there to help! (Shaking head...) I could hardly believe my eyes!

I understand that the lady had a bunch of flyers that she was distributing to the people there to watch the matches... They never said what the flyer was about. I'm very curious to know what it said.

The "dohyo climbing woman" looked a bit like she was drunk from too much sake or drugs or just incoherent... Just too strange of a "happening!" Goeido and Takekaze was looking to see what was going on, but managed to get their kokyu together and the best man won!!

Yes, it will be interesting to find out what the kyokai will do about the Dohyo after she climbed on it.... (Order, order!) That binzuke smell will get ya every time!! (In a state of confusion...)

I could be wrong but for the actual impurification to take place, wouldn't the woman have had to cross into the tawara of the inner circle. From the photos she touched the dohyo within the outer-line bales, for sure, but not inside the dohyo proper. The ring was not broken. The Ring is the magic shape, no?

Judging by the various quotes in Jonosuke's Rikishi Talk, the "desecration" of the dohyo seems to be a non-issue. Perhaps just another urban myth that is taken much more seriously among foreign fans than it actually is.

its not even an issue in japanese media? No one has brought up some of the things mentioned here in the thread? (cleaning dohyo, rebuilding, etc.?)

There was a only a short excitement around me, people were quite impresssed by Takamisakari's quick reaction, then everyone focussed on the Goeido bout and it went on business as usual with Takamisakari. A lot less excitement than in this thread. And if someone thinks there is any need of a "purifying" - for what - I can only imagine they do it secretly early in the morning when the doors are still closed and no feminist activist can watch it (Whatever above, it is funny...)

She was obviously a mentally unstable woman as even the police can't figure out what her motive was. The Kyokai is not planning to press any charge at this point.

Unfortunate thing is more and more things like this happen, more and more rikishi will be separated from the spectators. I recall those female guards were not as nuisance as they are now before Kotooshu loudly protested some guy slapped him on his back while walking back on Hanamichi.

Even in a hon-basho, if you go around the back of the Kokugikan or the side, you see even Makunouchi guys walking back and forth. I wonder how long they will keep doing that instead of them going through the underground garage like ozeki and yokozuna.

If you ever want to take pictures of them at close range during a hon-basho, there is nowhere better than waiting for them at one of the side entrances as they get off a cab and on the way to the dressing room. Of course they won't talk to you or anything but at least you can get within meters or so to take a good picture.

One of the great things about going to see Ozumo live is that you can get so close to rikishi and that may not be so true in the future.

I remember one time five or six years ago their security was so lax that I literally walked into the dressing room by mistake and no one stopped me.

All too true! I really hope this is an isolated incident. I'd hate to see the intimacy of sumo changed because of a kook like this one.

It was on the front page of at least two of the sports newspapers this morning.

And at least 6 online papers ran articles about it.

I think yamaneko meant the "desecration" aspect of it. That the incident itself is in the news isn't too surprising.

Just to merge this discussion with the concept of irony: true irony would have been if this event happened during the haru basho in Osaka!!

The most detailed report so far described a middle-aged woman attempting to climb onto the dohyo during the Goeido-Kakizoe bout. She got both knees and hands on the edge of the dohyo when a gray-haired spectator grabbed one of her legs and prevented her from going further.

At that point, Nishikido Oyakata, who was in his shimpan seat, rushed over as did Takamisakari from his on-deck position. The two of them along with several yobidashi managed to pull the intruder away from the dohyo towards the hanamichi. In her hands was a stack of flyers with a lot of mumbo-jumbo written on them. The only decipherable message was a plaintive "Help!" that was scrawled across the sheets of paper.

The woman apparently purchased a masu-C ticket for ¥9,200 and waited for an opportunity to make her move. There were six female guards along the hanamichi but the intruder ignored their "Please stop!" warnings. Shimpan are normally not allowed to leave their duty station, but Nishikido said, "I made eye contact with Hanaregoma Oyakata and then went to stop the woman. She was close to being on the dohyo, so I thought I better do something quick. [When I grabbed her] she was making some kind of moaning sound."

As for Robocop, he was his usual self. "[That kind of thing] is bad for the heart," he said still agitated. "I was wondering what the commotion was when I saw this "older fellow" [sic] coming at us. My immediate thought was what the heck was [this person] doing at our [place of battle]?"

The woman was first taken to an empty room at the KK and then handed over to the local police. Throughout, she was muttering incoherently. The police later released her to the custody of her relatives. Isenoumi Oyakata, NSK Chief of Security, said, "We have no intention of pressing charges. I'm just glad that security was not breached. Everyone took proper action right away." The article mentioned that the oyakata was relieved that the intruder did not enter the center ring of the dohyo where the actual bouts take place.
