Naganoyama 5,755 Posted March 13, 2006 I am sure you are right and it is an error. Possibly his shikona is meant to be Kagayama to avoid a clash with Kagaya of Kasugano. I guess the error will be fixed soon.

Jonosuke 28 Posted March 18, 2006 (edited) Here's a list of Ichiban Shusse, meaning they won all their Mae-zumo bouts, likely they only faced a minimum of two opponents. There is an additional Matsuoka who was not in the original list prepared by Nagano san so I have no information on him at at the moment. Edit: Sorry it was actually Matsutani from Matsugane, however he is not from Tokyo but from Fukuoka. Asashosakari 18,239 Posted March 26, 2006 (edited) Stuff: The Kagaya[ma] profile has been fixed now. Mori Tatsuo's shusshin has been changed from Saitama to Oita. And, for anyone that might care to adopt any of these, here's the list of shikona changes among these shin-deshi: Gorgadze Levan (Kasugano) -> Tochinoshin Homma Yukiya (Kasugano) -> Tochihiryu Honda Nobuyuki (Takadagawa) -> Tsurunoumi Kagaya Jo (Naruto) -> Takakagaya Kimura Masakazu (Tokitsukaze) -> Tokitenryu Miura Ayumu (Mihogaseki) -> Masumiura Nakano Masatoshi (Sadogatake) -> Kotonakano Okuda Sho (Sadogatake) -> Kotookuda Oshima Shinichiro (Musashigawa) -> Onoshima Oyama Shinichiro (Oitekaze) -> Daishoiwa Uebayashi Satoru (Kokonoe) -> Wakabayashi Uuganbaatar Delgersaikhan (Minezaki) -> Torugawa Sakai Kanetoshi (Hanakago) -> Wakahizen Suzuki Takuya (Shikoroyama) -> Suzukiyama Takaira Satojiro (Sadogatake) -> Kototakaira Watanabe Kentaro (Sadogatake) -> Kotowatanabe Watanabe Yuki (Takadagawa) -> Ryuden Yamaguchi Yuya (Sadogatake) -> Kotoyamaguchi Yamamoto Masaki (Kasugano) -> Tochinoshima Some guys that are still iffy are Ajigawa-beya's Takahashi (there's already ex-college rikishi Takahashi in Makushita of course, and normally everybody in Ajigawa gets a proper shikona anyway), and the two Mori's...their case is a bit special, as they don't use the same kanji and they're pronounced differently (long o vs. short o). Let's hope the Kyokai doesn't throw a curveball here by allowing both to stay with that name. BTW, I suppose that shindeshi Sakurai Naori is the brother of Jonidan Nankaio (Sakurai Hiroki), seeing as they're both from Kagoshima and in Nakamura-beya? Tsukinowa 0 Posted March 29, 2006 (edited) BTW, I suppose that shindeshi Sakurai Naori is the brother of Jonidan Nankaio (Sakurai Hiroki), seeing as they're both from Kagoshima and in Nakamura-beya? According to Sumo magazine, Sakurai is the younger brother of Nankaio. Hirata is the brother of Jonidan Isonokuni. Masumiura is the brother of Jonidan Miura. Suzuki is the nephew of former Makushita Atsumi(Miyaginobeya). Honda is the son of former Makushita Asahizuru. Katagiri is the grandchild of former Ozeki Nayoroiwa. Azumashida 1 Posted March 30, 2006 Last Thursday, day 12 of the basho, somewhere between Maeta's and Ikioi's bouts (high sandanme) I saw one of the three groups of mae-zumo deshi being presented to the audience. I naively thought it was the top guys but now have figured that it must be one of the other two groups (probably sanban shusse but I'm not quite sure). Anyway here's a picture I took: Can anyone confirm which of the groups it was? And when are the top mae-zumo guys usually presented?

Or is it pretty universal that if you have zero or even one win at your mae-zumo debut, you're doomed to mediocrity? Difficult to say since mae-zumo stats (of the past) are diificult to have. Well, Hakuho started with a make-koshi in jonokuchi and he made it to ozeki so far, so I could even imagine a poor mae-zumo debut 'making it'.

Or is it pretty universal that if you have zero or even one win at your mae-zumo debut, you're doomed to mediocrity? If you look back, these guys are all, except Terasawa, within a few months of their 15th birthdays. There is a potential age gap of 7 years between oldest and youngest, surely the older guys must have a physical advantage until the youngsters develope the skills to cope with bigger tougher opponents. Asashosakari 18,239 Posted March 30, 2006 And which one of the two Mori-boys is called Mouri (= Niban Shusse 11), which one Mori (= Shanban Shusse 13)? Mouri is Mori Tatsuo, Mori is Mori Nobuyuki.
Jonosuke 28 Posted March 30, 2006 The Sanban Shusse's Mori from Wakayama is with Tagonoura Beya and it is MORI while Niban Shusse's MoUri from Oita is with Muashigawa Beya. Actually they do have totally different kanjis - the first MORI is simply 森 as in a forest while the second is 毛利, the same as a Japanese astranaut or Motonari Mouri who was a well known Daimyo or Shogun during 1500. Generations of Mouri family controlled areas around Hiroshima and Motonari was a great strategist and had he lived longer, he could have defeated Hideyoshi Toyotomi during Japan's war torn strife era from 1400 to 1600. However he was a family man and lived to be 75 years old (even had a child when he was 71 years old). There is a well known story of him giving three arrows to his three sons at his deathbed. He picked up one and broke it. Then he told them if he put three arrows together and they were hard to break. He wanted to tell them it was more important to stay together and work together as brothers so that the family lines would continue and prosper rather than try to control the whole Japan and end up fighting with each other. Just getting back to Mae-zumo stats, I've been keeping track of them since the Hatsu Basho last year and hope to possibly to have them on SumoFanMag but it's gettting to be quite a work keeping up with all their records since their Mae-zumo basho. But one day soon I hope to be able to do so. I'd say roughly half of the new recruits from the last year's Hatsu and Haru are gone now.
Kishinoyama 578 Posted March 31, 2006 Some interesting names there, especially in the left-hand column. Yea one of my favorites is there and he had two 0-7 records and still made it to Makuuchi! I believe Kotoinazuma was a Komusubi for one tournament rather late in his career. (I am not worthy...)
