Bix Poku 1 Posted July 17, 2006 ROHO have did well.Another time any rude sumotory will thinck about his words. I thinck ROHO will kick averybody who will attatempt insult him on dohyo next time with large possibilities. CIVILE LOW must prevent any public insulting among rikishi. This is a bit hotheadedly said. That's the problem with Roho also. Insulting fellow rikishi are very bad manners. But answering that insult and becoming violent are much worse. Wise man can be greater of any insults without stepping down to his opponent insulting him. Beating photographers is nothing to do with honor.
Asashosakari 20,249 Posted July 17, 2006 TAIKAI should be arrested first for public insulting. Oh man, the entertainment around here just keeps getting better. As they say: If OY didn't exist, we'd have to invent him. (Eating...) (I dunno...) (In a state of confusion...)
_the_mind_ 0 Posted July 17, 2006 Worst case scenario,I knew a foreigner who, after punching out a bar owner (who insulted the gaijin then reached over grabbed said gaijin's tie and blew his nose on it), was arrested, locked up for 4 days, released to find out he was fired from his job, then when he went to immigration to get a re-entry permit his visa was literally ripped out of his passport. For one punch, not unprovoked. wow, just wow. how did the police justify not arresting the bar owner? was it just because he was the owner??
SalParadise 0 Posted July 17, 2006 MODERATOR - You should know that - "'Public Insulting' is not a crime in itself. ( by SalParadise )". There are specific laws regulating speech. I am very familiar with them in US law. I am not as familiar with the Japanese law. I do, however, know enough about Japanese law to know that insulting someone is not a crime in and of itself in Japan. The exceptions to this rule generally involve things like soundtrucks (specifically those belonging to politicians, as laws are designed to prevent strong-arming politicians from speaking out/being properly represented in an election). However, this is in reference to public places in Japan and the US. It does not apply to this message board, as you seem to be indicating that it is. This message board is not public. It is private. You are free to speak your mind until the moderators feel the need to shut you up. You have no right to infringe on the rights of the owners of this private forum. _the_mind_: While Japan may seem like a bastion of first-world liberties, there is a seedy underbelly of life and the law in Japan. Let me state very clearly that most people involved in enforcing and upholding in the law are not racist, and that racist cops and the like are the exception rather than the rule. However, there are racist/xenophobic police officers who would come to address a situation as the one in the story, and take the word of the Japanese person over that of the foreigner, either subconsciously or consciously. There is also a very big line that is crossed when physical violence is used that is not explained away by provocative speech. The situation sounds like it ended very poorly, and perhaps unfairly for the foreigner, however, anyone living in a foreign country -- Japan or otherwise -- should realize how thin a thread their continued existence in that country depends on. There are many foreigners in Japan who get deported every year for doing something stupid and getting caught. Those of us interested in maintaining good standing with our jobs and the law in Japan tend to act with more caution so as to not risk our good standing. Tetsuzukiyama 0 Posted July 17, 2006 wow, just wow. how did the police justify not arresting the bar owner? was it just because he was the owner?? For blowing his nose on the guy's tie? Exil 301 Posted July 17, 2006 I think everybody has had the chance to give their two cents worth about this. (I am not worthy...) (I am not worthy...) (I am not worthy...) You are free to continue discussion about Japanese law in the Japan-Japanese subforum. We can all now feel better about ourselves and move on.
