a mongolian told me...

Then I guess we should be talking to his friend.

Actually, at the top of the thread you will find a post by amgaa who says he READ that article.

Blue Wolf seems to know something too, so maybe the interview was published in Mongolia only.

Well, come September we'll know the truth.

I say it's total nonsense. And your reasoning behind the Mongolian jungyo thingy sure sounds solid to me..

That's all? Not much to fuzz about here. The only thing he's saying is that he won't retire before the jungyo, so he's basically saying nothing at all. Much ado about nothing.

Thanks for clearing this mess, Calvin! (Sign of approval)

?????? ?????????, ???? ???????? ?????????????? ???? ???? ???????? ?????? ?? ??????? ?? ???????????.

Calvin, thanks a lot for translation. Mongolian sentence that you left untranslated sounds:

....the oyokata was very happy also for my record number of kimarite as well as number of straight basho appearances.....

You know every rikishi talks about retirement after a bad basho or series of injuries or age. I am not even sure how many times I heard that from the current ozeki group save one.

All oyakatas are used to listening to them saying this or that all the time (as he himself probably said that many times while active). Things change after having a good basho especially something like getting a Sansho. After a good basho it's all water under the bridge.

Kyokushuzan may retire not so far in the future as he is one of more senior Makuuchis now but at the same time as Oshima oyakata said he could go on for a little more (3 years is stretching a bit though).

If I recall, Kyokushuzan unlike Kyokutenho has not acquired a Japanese citizenship and as he has no Toshiyori Myoseki asssured as Kyokutenho, he will not likely be staying with the Kyokai after he retires. He could continue his study at Waseda University to get a diploma while working in Mongolia in some sumo related work but he won't likely be a permanent resident in Japan.

Although I beleive he would qualify for permanent resident status, allowing him to come & go/stay/work in Japan as much and as long as he likes.

can somebody please explain what happened with konishiki?
IIRC, after losing bout #13 against Kotonowaka in Kyushu'97 to fall to 5-8, he told the press that he would go intai after the basho. Alas, he wasn't even allowed to compete on day 14 after that announcement and Misugisato got a fusensho for Konishiki's very last non-appearance. Sale was pretty upset about this because he really wanted to complete his last basho.

If I recall correctly, the real tear-jerking part of this story was that Konishiki paid for his parents (either or both) to fly out to Japan from Hawai'i to watch him fight on senshuraku (day 15), which (of course), he wasn't allowed to do. Why tear-jerking? Throughout his whole career, this was to be their first time to watch him do sumo live..... :'-(
