Yeah the Great White Hope won. What a big upset for U and Kaio fans. Now Hakuho gotta get the Yusho!

No disrespect to Hakuho, but as well as him winning it, I think Kaio lost the bout. Once again he bottled it when the pressure got to be too much. I think if Hakuho were in the same situation (maybe in November next year?!), he would not be so cautious.

Kaio can still make Yokozuna, but he needs to get at least a jun-yusho, which means that Hakuho as well as Asashoryu need to start losing a bit for this to happen :)

I beg to differ. U was all business. Hakuhou almost lost it twice. He was just better. KaioU can lose and be OK at the same time. No need to make excuses for him every time he loses (injured, choking, hungry, whatever). He lost a bout to a rikishi who today was better than him. He's number three right now, and that's a fact.

I am not a U fan by a far cry, but I am rooting for him to fulfill his dream, even at the expense of my man Asa, or Hakuhou, for that matter.

Tomorrow-Asa-Hakuhou!! Can't get better than this for suspense.

Tomorrow's Asashoryu vs. Hakuho bout promises to be the match of the basho ;-) (Being unsure...)

I seem to remember a report that Hakuho was on top of Asashoryu in keiko recently. I don't feel that this bout is a foregone conclusion by any means.

7-1, to be precise. We didn't dwell on that too much then, did we..

And well, Asa didn't exactly look stellar in his last remaining "easy" bout against Shimotori....should def. be interesting tomorrow, but you'll get no predictions out of me (I am not worthy...)

I'll put my neck on the line and say that if Hakuho doesn't do some sort of terrible horrendous tachiai, then the victory will indeed be his...

I had to throw in the "if" (I am not worthy...)

I agree with Yoavshimaru! If he wasnt good, he would be 7-3 or 6-4!!! In Aki Basho, he wasn't good and he had 8-2 (on the 10th day), losing versus maegashiras!!!! Now he is 10-0... And Hakuho is very strong...He could be promoted to Sekiwake in January (IF he doesn't loose all his remaining bout... :-P but he shouldn't lose ALL these bouts... (Enjoying a beer...) )...)

sekiwake for Hakuho looks a bit tough cause there will be Tochiazuma,Miyabiyama and Wakanosato filling those places (by the looks of it)

and if Kotomitsuki makes a great finish who knows ..... he may be a candidate too for a spot ....

No, I think it will be impossible to keep Hakuho out of a sekiwake slot.

how many Sekiwake then would we have?

4-5 ?

i guess it can happen (there is no rule against it) but i cannot remember a similar occasion (i am not that old though ...)

Well if Hakuho wins the Yusho (a possibility if he can get by Asashoryu) he would almost certainly be promoted to Sekiwake.

On the other hand, even if Kotomitsuki wins 10, the kyokai could still leave him as a Komusubi. They have done that before (though granted the last time was 1991).

So I would be a bit surprised it there were more than 4 Sekiwake next basho though. Especially if Miyabiyama manages that 8th win.

No doubt this was one of the best matches we've seen this century (partly the hype, mostly the sumo!) I thought it somewhat unusual (and maybe uncharacteristic) for Kaio to come after Hakuho with an "oshi" attack (although he had been hinting he was feeling particularily strong in this area so far this Basho). While granted it was good to see him go out and be aggressive right off the bat, I just can't help but think his chances of loosing to Hakuho via "yotsu" would have been considerably less had he just gone for a grip on the mawshii as he's so good at doing. I dont think Hakuho is strong enough to go chest to chest with him, instead he maybe gave Hakuho a little room to manuever around and use his momentum against him which is just what he did. Either way while I'm a llitte dissapointed that Kaio did not win, it was nonetheless a spectacular match. All certainly is not lost however as there are a whole 5 days to go! "Kaio ganbare!" - Ryu

An excellent match today... and an impressive win. Kaio looked like he had it won. As for tomorrows match Asa vs Hakuho... I think Asashoryu will win.... even with the keiko results posted from before the tournament (7-1 for Hakuho). Maybe for a safer prediction I will be rooting for the mongolian rikishi..... :-D just kidding.

I was really quite disappointed when Kaio lost this one.

But on further review, I think he has nothing to be ashamed of at all. That was a really good match. Hakuho just won, that's all. Kaio didn't do anything wrong, he just got bumped out of position for a split second by Hakuho, and went down.

Great match.

I am officially on the Hakuho bandwagon.

And, just to poke a sleeping dog with a sharp stick....

Maybe I cannot comprehend the power of the Blue Dragon....But Hakuho can, and he scoffs at the power of the Blue Dragon....

(I am not worthy...) Have fun.....

Hakuho was also moving to keep his left hip as far away from Kaio as possible. Isn't migi yotsu Kaio's favourite grip?

More like hidari-yotsu I'd say... (right uwate gives him an especially powerful position)

Which term is it for inside or outside grip? I might be mixing them up...

I found what I was trying to remember...

After a string of fruitless bashos, Ozeki Kaiou won the Yusho in the September basho. The fans are hoping that he would leapfrog to the next plateau more motivated than ever.

The major change in the basho was in how he responded after he failed to grab the "migi(right)-uwate". Previously when he could not get the migi-uwate, he would resort to a "kote-nage" or "tsuki-otoshi" or in some cases he would bring his opopnent close in and dug his own grave in the process.

But in this last basho, using a powerful "ottsuke", he would float his opponent up first and then quickly turned into offensive. As he was facing his opponent right on, he was able to exert the pressure directly and more effectively.

In the past Yokozuna Kitanoumi used "ottsuke" skillfully when he could not get the uwate first. What Kaiou should aim for now is found in this maneuver. The Kyushu is his local basho where he receives a tremendous support. The key to the Yokozuna promotion may very well hang on just one thing only - how Kaiou would use his right.

Uwate is outside / overarm grip. Kaio needs the migi-uwate, which corresponds to hidari-yotsu. Migi-yotsu is when the right arm grip is inside (shitate).
