I believe the KK counts for Hakuoho and Oyamada have got a little ahead of themselves. ;)

I'm probably incorrect, but the 6 KK for Oyamada counts the 2-2-3 Corona basho; otherwise 5 KK in a row

No matter how how much I doublecheck the data, a few errors always creep in, especially with a long list like this one.  I appreciate the input.  It's fixed now.

Oyamada was 2-2 before Covid kyujo, so that basho shouldn't count as a KK by my reckoning.

Nagoya 2023, Senshuraku (Final)

I see a rivalry developing among Asahakuryu, Satorufuji and Wakaikari.  In their respective 3-basho careers, each has one yusho.  I wonder what will happen in Makushita?

For interest, should also mention former wallee Hokuseihō, who suffered his first proper MK this basho (i.e. not counting his injury-forced 0-2-13 in jūryō).

Definitely worth an honorable mention with 9 post-Wall KKs, which is longer than his time spent on the Wall!

Aki 2023 starting lineup:

The Wall welcomes sekitori debutante and former Ms10HD Onosato, and also of note, 13-1 Haruyama.   Congrats to the other sekitori debutante Takihashi.  On the other hand, Takerufuji just misses the Makushita-joi at Ms6e and will need a spectacular record and some banzuke luck to be considered for promotion.  Overall, The Wall gains 12 and loses 6, including Kiho and Kazekeno, who both just missed KK in Nagoya.

Aki 2023, Nakabi + 1 (Day 9):

I'm a day late with the mid-basho update.  Onosato, Asahakuryu and Gonoumi remain perfect, so we have yusho contenders here in three divisions!  Takerefuji fell out of yusho contention and promotion consideration with his first loss on day 9.  Toseiryu is in danger of ending the longest KK streak on the Wall, just short of "dai-Wallee" status.

J12w Takahashi: 5-4 (7 KK, 46-12) Jk, Jd yusho

I commented on Asahakuryu above, but there are several additional rikishi averaging less than one loss per basho:

Ms6e Takerufuji: 5-2 (6 KK, 37-5) Jd, Jk yusho

Sd45w Haruyama 6-1 (3 KK, 19-2) Jk yusho

Kyushu, Nakabi (Day 8):

So far this has been a lackluster basho for the Wall.  Only five rikishi have winning records as of today, and all of them are in the top six.  Onosato stumbled today in his quest for a Juryo yusho asfter just missing the mark last basho, and is now tied with two others.

J5e Onosato: 6-2 (3 KK, 28-9)

J9e Takahashi: 5-3 (8 KK, 54-18) Jk, Jd yusho

Really hate to rain on such a short parade, especially when I'm all for exceptions when they seem due, but didn't Shiroma technically hit the wall by going kyujo on his first appearance on the banzuke?

Yes -- I was debating whether to include him or not.  It was hard not to include someone who is undefeated after two basho, and kyujo at the first appearance seems like something that could be excepted since it doesn't interrupt a streak.  I may need to mark him with an asterisk like I did for COVID-kyujos.

Hatsu 2024, Nakabi (Day 8)

There's very little middle ground on the Wall after 8 days.  Takerufuji and Karuyama wasted no time in claiming their KKs.  Onosato, Wakaikari and Shiroma are one win away from KK, while Satorufji and Anosho are one loss from MK.

M15w Onosato: 7-1 (4 KK, 41-11)

J6w Shirokuma Takahashi: 5-3 (9 KK, 62-25) Jk, Jd yusho

Anosho had to battle back from 0-3! I'm sure staying on the Wall was a big motivating factor for him.

Satorufuji's yusho last time did him no favours, that was a massive leap in opposition quality he wasn't really prepared for. 3 wins was a very respectable outcome.

That's the thing about walls: you can tap them, bump into them, or hit them at high speed.

Winning Ms yusho from the lower half of the division is a deceptive result; you only get to beat a single top-half rikishi to do it (due to the way torikumi works in lower divisions).

There was no reason to believe Satorufuji was even close to being the best rikishi in the division when he did it.

Yeah, 3-4 in the next basho seems to be the median result for yusho winners from the lower half.
