Hatsu 2022, Day 10:

Six KKs have been claimed since Day 8, while our bottom two have gone MK.  Atamifuji stands on the cusp of sekitori status with a 3-3 record, having won both of his crossover matches in Juryo.  Once again, there will be no new wallees coming out of Jonidan, although former Sd100TDs Kinbozan and Suguro have made their second KKs to join the list for Haru.  Former Ms15TD Oshoma currently sits at 3-2.

Ms1w Atamifuji: 3-3 (6 KK, 39-9)

Ms9w Kanno: 4-1 (6 KK 31-9)

How about Mukainakano for March - he did have an 0-0-7, but that was COVID imposed and he didn't lose his rank: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=12709

Thanks!  And reviewing the results again, I find Raiho down in Jonidan to add to the list as well.

Day 13, Haru 2022:

All fates have been decided, save for Atamifuji.  Will he prevail in his last two bouts to avoid MK and also a beheading of The Wall?  Congrats to Kinbozan for earning his second yusho while on The Wall.  He also took the Sandanme yusho in his first basho at Sd100TD at Kyushu 2021.  He stands to replace Atamifuji at the top of The Wall after only his third KK.

There is a back-and-forth trend developing.  Losses at Kyushu were heavy at the top of the Wall, and at Hatsu it was mainly the low rankers.

Next tourney's leader Kinbozan will be in the meatgrinder, so a "scalping" is a possibility.

I like Kinbozan's chances though

from what I can tell, it should be a less tough group that Kinbozan might be able to squeeze past/go through

I tried guessing who might be in the makushita joi in the promotion/demotion thread; let me know what you think.

It's been a while since we've had any honorable mentions among former Wallees.  I think there are a few candidates, if not worthy after Haru, would certainly be with another KK, so are worthy of attention in Natsu.

Kitanowaka: After charging to 8 straight KKs Kitanowaka hit a rough patch, going 3-4 in three of the following four bashos.  Since that time, he has reeled off 5 straight KKs with his 11-4 in Haru putting an exclamation point on this active streak to date.

Nishikawa: Starting with 4 straight KKs, Nishikawa succumbed to injury in Aki 2021, going 2-3-2.  Following that up with the Makushita yusho in Hatsu, his KK at 4-3 in Haru proves the yusho was not just a fluke.

Osanai: Osanai's three straight KKs to start include the Jonidan yusho, and otherwise total up to 19-2.  Following a marginal MK at 3-4 in Aki 2021, similar to Nishikawa he achieved a 7-0 yusho-doten in Sandanme, following it up with a 4-3 KK in Haru.

Hoping to see more excitement from these three!

Natsu 2022 starting lineup

Following the carnage in Haru, we find a very abbreviated Wall listing for Natsu, led by Makushita yusho winner Kinbozan.  Will Kinbozan prevail in the meatgrinder and win promotion to sanyaku in his first opportunity?  All told, there are three rikishi making their Makushita joi debut, to include Chiyosakae and Kamito.  In his sophomore effort, Nishikawa holds the envious position of Ms1w, while Tsushimanada and Roga round out the group of hopefuls.  Hokuseiho and Kotoyusho, unsuccessful in their recent Juryo debuts are looking for redemption.  Meanwhile, Juryo veterans Chiyonoumi and Hakuyozan have their sights on a return to the paid ranks.  Ganbatte!

Ms4e Kinbozan: (3 KK, 19-2)

Ms32w Mukainakano: (5 KK, 24-11-7)*

Ms47e Kiryuko: (5 KK, 27-8)

Ms54e Nobehara: (5 KK, 26-9)

Ms59w Suguro: (3 KK, 15-4-2)

Ms60e Miyagi: (5 KK, 26-9)

Sd42e Raiho: (3 KK 17-4-7)*

Jd48w Aoifuji: 4-3 (2 KK, 9-5)

Natsu 2022, Day 10:

It's only day 10, but all fates on The Wall have been decided, save for Miyagi who holds onto hope at 2-3.  The Wall also welcomes 9 new sophomores, whose efforts are anything but sophomoric, :-P to fill the the spots vacated from last basho's slaughter.  These include three(!) rikishi off to a 12-0 start!  That's something to keep Wall aficionados interested for the last 5 days, along with Kinbozan's promotion hopes.

Ms4e Kinbozan: 4-1 (4 KK, 23-3)

Ms32w Mukainakano: 4-1 (6 KK, 28-12-7)*

Ms47e Kiryuko: 4-1 (6 KK, 31-9)

Ms54e Nobehara: 4-1 (6 KK, 30-10)

new Ms59e Kanzaki; 5-0 (2 KK, 12-0)

Ms59w Suguro: 0-0-5 (3 KK, 15-4-7)

Ms60e Miyagi: 2-3 (5 KK, 28-12)

Sd42e Raiho: 4-1 (4 KK 21-5-7)*

new Sd65w Hatsuyama: 5-0 (2 KK, 10-2)

new Jd21e Kototebakari: 5-0 (2 KK, 12-0)

new Jd21w Kotokenryu: 5-0 (2 KK, 12-0)

new Jd42w Daiseizan: 5-0 (2 KK, 11-1)

new Jd43e Wakanosho: 4-1 (2 KK, 10-2)

new Jd72e Hanafusa: 5-0 (2 KK, 10-2)

new Jd80w Toseiryu: 5-0 (2 KK, 9-3)

Very interested to track the progress of Mukainakano and Raihō. They've made steady and above average progress up the banzuke, but haven't stayed perfect, so haven't attracted quite as much attention as Hokuseihō or this current crop of excellent recruits. Miyagino might not implausibly have 5 sekitori by the end of the year or the start of next, which would make Isegahama ichimon one of the most disproportionately represented in terms of sekitori because of their otherwise small size.

Think Mukainakano is a lock for Sekitori, Raiho I'm not 100% on due to size and the lack of watch time in my end. Will wait to see him in Makushita before a full-fledged opinion.
