Asojima 2,874 Posted March 31, 2022 All of the heya listings have been updated for corrections, omissions and inconsistencies. It is currently my intention to do a final cleanup of the Tweaks and Heya Lists following the wrap up of the Natsu basho and then move on to find new ryus to slay. Comments on and correction suggestions to the current listings are strongly encouraged via posts to this topic or by PM. The fat lady is warming up for her finale. 1

Kamitsuumi 402 Posted March 26, 2023 I mainly double checked what I thought were shusshin-based shikona. Fujishima stable: Koshinoryū: koshi should be from the old province name Mugendai: his shikona evokes 無限 mugen infinite, much like his shisho Musōyama evoking 無双 musō without equal Futagoyama stable: Kotakiyama: Kodaki (with the same kanji) is a place name within his shusshin city Isenoumi stable: Narutaki: it's a place name within his shusshin city Kise stable: Shokeima: *keima* is a piece name in shōgi Musashigawa stable: Naniwamusashi: Naniwa is an alternate name for Ōsaka Takekuma stable: Kanzaki: the kanji are wrong Kumanoryū: I hadn't noticed him before. This probably means *kuma* is going to be a secondary heya mark Shibatayama stable: Komanokuni: Koma is a place name in his shusshin town. It's also the Japanese name for Goguryeo/Goryeo Wakahizen: Hizen is an old province Shikihide stable: Itakozakura: Itako is a city near his shusshin, across Lake Kasumigaura Nihonmatsu: It's his shusshin Saionji: the last kanji is wrong Shikoroyama stable: Miyata: It's his real name Takadagawa stable: Ai: a clipping of his shusshin Ōnojo: It's his shusshin Shōnannoumi: Shōnan is the name of the region around his shusshin Tatsunami stable: Taranami: Tara is the name of the town (same kanji as the pre-merger name) next to his shusshin Yamahibiki stable: Hatachijō: hatachi from Hatachiyama, his old stable Ienoshima: from Ieshima, an island within his shusshin city Ieshima: ditto 3
Yarimotsu 592 Posted December 14, 2023 Has there ever been an effort to catalogue the history of kabu names in English? Where that kabu name originates from, how much we know about the early days etc?

Where that kabu name originates from, how much we know about the early days etc? The origins of most of the kabu (and gyoji) names are buried deep in antiquity. I suspect that a lot of them are derived from all or part of the family names of the original holders. I read somewhere that Kise came from parts of the family names of the two gyoji who founded the heya. It is likely that research into most of these names would require access to some very old and very obscure sumo documentation.

Kimura Sehei is still the full name of Kise - there were other gyoji-beya as well, most if not all other toshiyori names were shikona of past rikishi, you can search the DB for them. Sometimes the news tell about former holders not in the DB - the kabu lists for most start with numbers above 5. Takasago is one of the few with full coverage.
