Some observations from Aki 16:

Vaughn goes from very jerky to very smooth.  There seems to be a geographic or ISP variance.  Some get excellent video while others are getting barely usable reception.  Chrome seems to be a better choice for smooth viewing than Firefox, but neither is close to a guarantee.

We have an alternate site for viewing the UBS coverage.  Good quality video and no sign up required.

For me, Vaughn is pretty much unwatchable, and I'm on chrome.

The alternative UBS site seems good though.

Effective November 6, it appears that NHK has shut down its channel on Vaughn TV.  The NHK and Sherming22 links both display a message saying "Channel Closed by Copyright Holder".  All of the other Japanese channels covered by Vaughn remain available. We may again be down to the UBS links and the Chinese q link found during Aki for live sumo coverage.

I just quoted myself above. It's happened before. Sherming 22 replaced Sherming 777, so perhaps Sherming 22 will be replaced too.

NHK-G is back on Vaughn.  It is on NHK and is now on Sherming9  rather than Sherming22.

Edit:  For now, the Live Chat option seems to have been disabled on all Vaughn site

Great big thank you to you for finding it. You're an ace.

I imagine the Sherming sumo channel will be closed and re-opened for every basho. Fingers crossed.

Here's hoping the chatline will be restored too.

I just went to Sherming9 and signed in. The chatline was functioning.

I am getting the chat on Vaughn on Chrome, but not on Firefox or IE.  Might be a problem with my configuration.  Working on it.

The UBS alternate is no longer working. It cannot acquire the UBS signal.  Normal UBS is still OK, but it still needs a login.  Sherming9 video and chat are still good on Chrome and IE.  I am getting video only on Firefox.

It seems somebody, whether it be the Kyokai, NHK, or some other interested party, has been making the rounds on Youtube killing channels that put up sumo for the world. I've lost at least three since the basho.

Does anybody know if the Kyokai actually has a media officer of some sort? I'm fairly new to the forum, so if there is another thread already addressing this please point me there, but has there been any concerted effort by fans to contact the Kyokai and make them aware of us who would gladly pay something to watch overseas?

1/28/2017 - Using Firefox, I am getting a certificate error when I try to login to UBS.  IE and Chrome allow the login to go forward.  Anyone else having this problem?

Update:  1/29/2017 - UBS is again active on Firefox.  Alt-UBS is still not working on any browser.

Something strange is going on with the Vaughn Japanese TV links above.  For all of the non-sherming links except TBS and Tokyo, I am getting a notice that I am geographically blocked for the link.  All of the sherming except 666 are still available for me.  666 has apparently been blocked by Fuji TV as a copyright infringement.

Note: Some of the non-sherming links (including NHK) have been restored for me.  Sherming666 is now Sherming9998 for Fuji TV.

Update:  In an Email exchange with Vaughnsoft, I was told that the mov3.co links do not belong to Vaughn.  Someone else has set them up as pointers to the Vaughn system.  The link bans I am seeing are probably between Vaughn and the mov3.co site.  The bans seem to come and go.

Update 2:  Had a long and interesting chat with a Vauhgnsoft techie.  My problem with chat on Firefox is a configuration glitch between my Firefox and my Flash Player.  Would require a deep uninstall of one or both to fix it.  I can live with Chrome for chat purposes.

I found this guy on youtube,  he posts the NHK English recap. I searched for his name in the sumo forum and I didn't find it. He posts each day, looks good. I will always watch Kinta's too of course.

In April, UBS appears to have gone to full subscription again.  After login, I am getting the screen listing the subscription rates.  The rates seem reasonable, but, as far as I know, no one outside Mongolia has succeeded in getting an active subscription.  During Haru, UBS was getting frequent short freezes which made it basically unusable for sumo watching.

UBS may be returning in a new form.  UBS still exists as a subscription service which seems to be unavailable outside Mongolian.  Alt-UBS also seems to be moribund.  Shortly before UBS went to subscription, a UBS Stream site began appearing that looked usable, but it went under when the base UBS disappeared.  On June 30, UBS Stream is back with no subscription required.  It remains to be seen whether Sumo will still be covered.

Update:  As of July 4, UBS Stream has been showing a notice that it cannot connect to the (UBS?) network.
Update 2:  UBS Stream was active again on July 7.

Developments during the recently completed Nagoya 17 basho:

Sherming9 (Vaughn TV) remains the most reliable live stream of the NHK audio and video coverage.  Coverage is beginning at 3:10 PM JST in mid-Juryo.  News events or political activity may preempt the start of sumo coverage.  Something new is that adding a /old to the end of the URL for the sherming site brings up what seems to be an older version of the site software. This may be an alternative if the main link gets froggy. The Sherming site includes a live chat that is used by some of our forum members.

qq remains a viable choice for live streaming of the NHK video coverage.  Audio coverage remains a mixture of Japanese and some Chinese commentary.  The daily start up time is unpredictable.  Makuuchi is always covered (even if news or political activity preempts sumo coverage on NHK/Sherming9).  Coverage may start anywhere from early Makushita (1:30 PM JST) to mid-to-late Juryo (3:30 PM JST).

UBS has gone to a full subscription service which does not seem to be available outside Mongolian; however, there is now a UBS Stream service which provides login-free access to the UBS signal.  Sumo coverage still starts at about 4:10 PM JST and is limited to Makuuchi only.  It provides the NHK video signal with Mongolian audio commentary. The video signal seems to have a lower resolution than the Sherming and qq streams.

For me, the new version of Sherming9 does not work on IE11 or Edge.  It does work on both if I add the "/old" to the end of the standard Sherming9 URL. Both versions of the URL's work well on both Firefox and Chrome.

Update:  I am getting occasional short freezes on all browsers when using the /old version of the URL.  The new version is basically freeze-free.

I updated the tips and tools to reflect the Sherming changes - I don't know yet if the playlist servers will still change from day to day and if always 2 servers will work. I didn't check if the other Sherming channels follow the same playlist URLs pattern, but I guess they will.

One stops the recording with ctrl-c. You need to do that before ffmpeg freezes, which happens after 2, 3 minutes if the browser doesn't keep the connection alive. You have to then rename the .part file to some proper .mp4 name and can start another recording.

If it freezes, ffmpeg doesn't react after one time ctrl-c - 2 times interrupts youtube-dl as well and the recording gets corrupted,
Recording may lead to more stops in the live view in Firefox, buffering is all that's shown then, but the recording should be OK. One command-line set example:

Vaughn had changed server numbers each day, hls-ord-1a., hls-ord-2a. or hls-ord-3a. - but now the playlists have disappeared from the Firefox network analysis. 1 and 3 seem to work, 3 with sometimes better quality.

The recoding may stop properly by itself, to be sure to have it continue, this set to paste into the cmd-line window is better:

The "" quotes for the URL are not necessary for youtube-dl, but to prevent the forum editor from making it a link

*** stands for the proper path to youtube-dl

Without rename, a properly ended recording causes youtube-dl to exit at once with "already downloaded", and an interrupted .part recording gets deleted by the new recording. Careful to change the names of the next recording -  to rename to - in the lines you paste, else also one recording is lost.

It seems that also when the stream isn't watched in the browser, ffmpeg has no problems to record now  - but the video may freeze for  several seconds. Server 1a has the same quality as server 3a today, 1300kbits/s. After maybe 20min the recording stopped "properly", but that may happen anytime.
