Kintamayama 47,159 Posted July 21, 2004 Since Touki, Asashouryuu's tsuyuharai during his dohyo-iri, is likely to be demoted, the new tsuyuharai candidate is Takamisakari. "Of course I'll do it, if I'm asked. I haven't been asked yet, so.. I have done it actually 2, 3 times- his first dohyo-iri as a Yokozuna at Meiji shrine, for instance.." A lively addition to the dohyo iri- the most popular rikishi in Sumo and the top guy. When asked, Asa replied,"Takamisakari? Yes, it probably will be him". But will his movements be robot-like? "This is an important job and a great honor. It does make me nervous though.. Still..", added the Cop.
Jakusotsu 6,382 Posted July 21, 2004 A lively addition to the dohyo iri- the most popular rikishi in Sumo and the top guy. Maybe a bit too lively. I would find it quite a bit irritating if the crowd gets wild in their usual way just because the most popular Tsuyuharai ever steps on the dohyo. I'd rather have them cheer for the Yokozuna, as would be appropriate. Wouldn't Hokutoriki be a more decent candidate?

Takanorappa 97 Posted July 21, 2004 When asked, Asa replied,"Takamisakari? Yes, it probably will be him". But will his movements be robot-like? "This is an important job and a great honor. It does make me nervous though.. Still..", added the Cop. I think the tables would be turned if Takamisakari were the tachimochi, instead, though. Given Robocop's poor eyesight & then handing him a sword, wouldn't Asashoryu be the nervous one? (Punk rocker...) :-D
aderechelsea 125 Posted July 21, 2004 can someone please explain (if it is not much trouble) why would Takamisakari be the next in line after Toki as a tsuyuharai ? i only knew that it should be from the same heya ....
Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted July 21, 2004 (edited) can someone please explain (if it is not much trouble) why would Takamisakari be the next in line after Toki as a tsuyuharai ?i only knew that it should be from the same heya .... The tachimochi (often "swordbearer" in English) and tsuyu-harai (often "dew sweaper" in English) are chosen from non-Ozekis/non-yokozunas Makunouchi rikishi. Primarily from the same heya as the Yokozuna in question and secondarily from the same ichimon (heya group). Asashoryu is from Takasago which has now only Asasekiryu in the top division after Toki drops. The ichimon in which Takasago-beya is included is the Takasagfo-ichimon which consists of Azumazeki, Hakkaku, Kokonoe, Takasago, Nakamura and Nishikido. This narrows the search down to Takamisakari, Hokutoriki and Kaiho. I'm not sure if there is a set criteria for whom to chose of them, but Takamisakari will likely be the highest ranked of the three next basho and furthermore has done his duty before. aderechelsea 125 Posted July 21, 2004 i didn't know about the "ichimon thing" ..... now that we have the three choices in front of us it is clear that KAIHO should be the one chosen .... (Punk rocker...) he is the oldest one of them and has the longest career in makuuchi... (not to mention that he is my favourite rikishi and this is his only chance of being in such a ceremony) BTW ..... thanks Yubi-san for the info ... much appreciated
Takanorappa 97 Posted July 21, 2004 (edited) can someone please explain (if it is not much trouble) why would Takamisakari be the next in line after Toki as a tsuyuharai ?i only knew that it should be from the same heya .... I'll give it a shot. Tachimochi & tsuyuharai are lower sanyaku/maegashira-ranked & picked from the same heya (1st choice) or same ichimon (2nd choice). Tachimochi must be higher-ranked than tsuyuharai. Those are the only rules I've ever heard. The heyas in the Takasago ichimon have the following possibilities: Takasago-beya has M10w Asasekiryu (11-4) & soon-to-be Juryo Toki. Azumazeki-beya M7w Takamisakari (8-7) Hakkaku-beya has Sw Hokutoriki (3-12) & M8w Kaiho (7-8) Nakamura, Kokonoe (Chiyo's too high) & Nishikido don't have any Maegashira-level guys. So Asa has only the following choices. Given their results of last basho & a very quick GTB-ish look, the order of these rikishi should be somewhere around here: ~K-M3(luck of the draw) Asasekiryu (11-4) ~M6 (maybe higher) Takamisakari (8-7) ~M4-5 (maybe lower) Hokutoriki (3-12) ~M9 Kaiho (7-8) I would suppose Asasekiryu gets the tachimochi, being the highest ranker. It would then come down to Robocop or Hokutoriki, as being next on the banzuke. It's all up to Asa to pick, though, I believe. He could even go with Kaiho, if I'm not mistaken. [Added] Yubi beat me to it while I typing was fact finding. Obviously, I agree with Yubi (Sign of approval) Edited July 21, 2004 by Takanorappa
aderechelsea 125 Posted July 21, 2004 thank you too for your effort Takanorappa-san .... and if i didn't mention it earlier...... . . . . GO KAIHO FOR TSUYUHARAI !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted July 22, 2004 Takamisakari also did the job back in 2000 for Akebono, in his short Makuuchi stint until his knee injury.

Takanorappa 97 Posted July 22, 2004 Sorry. I couldn't resist. I'm sure not all these guys were captured at their "stretchiest" (Clapping wildly...)
Chienoshima 0 Posted July 22, 2004 If you are interested to figure out how high Takanohana strech his righ leg, just see the following Dale's movies dealing the first yokozuna dohyo-iri made by Takanohana : Takanohana's first dohyo-iri Actually, this video freezes when Takanohana is at his strechiest. Cheers, Chienoshima
Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted July 23, 2004 Good reference to the video :-D I think he'd pick the highest ranking qualified rikishi for these roles as a matter of honoring them.
Kashunowaka 300 Posted July 23, 2004 Good reference to the video :-D I think he'd pick the highest ranking qualified rikishi for these roles as a matter of honoring them. If I am not mistaken, Asashoryu hasn't always chosen the highest ranked maegashira from Takasago-beya to accompany him in the yokozuna dohyo-iri.
