Rikishi with cats

Recommended Posts

I laughed when I read this... the thought of intimidating and big men who just like cats.

Moru, named by Sokokurai, is just one the shisho's several pets. From Fukugoriki of Arashio beya.

More Moru and Mugi in the heya. Starts at around 9:15.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7drsQ46aHng

Quick summary

Moru 11 year old male, Mugi 7 year old male. Moru was adopted as a stray kitten while the heya had only 3 rikishi members at the time. Originally from Fukuoka when discovered during the Kyushu tournament, the Shisho and Okami took the cat with them back to Tokyo despite not having funds at the time to raise a cat. Named by Sokokurai, "moru" is the word for cat in Mongolia (муур). When he or his Mongolian peers saw it, they would call it "moru", thus the name. Since the beginnings, the okami allows Moru to freely walk in and out of the heya as he would always return. He is usually located on the first floor overseeing keiko with oyakata or the second floor partaking in chanko time with rikishi.

Mugi is shy and occupies the 3rd floor of the heya with his preferred friend Fukugoriki. He likes to stay in the quiet sleeping quarters of the building and dosen't like to venture outside. He can be seen on occasion at Fukugoriki's, or Tokkoriki's twitter feeds.

Hakuho paid a visit to Arashio beya for degeiko. When asked by the press to hold the heya's auspicious cat, Mole, the yokozuna hesitated, "I'm scared of cats, from getting scratched". He bravely held the cat for a moment anyway and did end up getting swiped at and scratched. Hakuho: "The real neko damashi. But, I'll forgive you."

If someone had told him how to hold the cat (or rather how not to) he might have fared better.

Genghis Khan was afraid of cats too. http://www.wisegeek.com/which-historical-figures-were-afraid-of-cats.htm

Apart from both being mighty Mongolian conquerors, another thing they have in common is that Genghis Khan didn't fight under his birth name either - it was Tamajin, or Temujin.

One thing they don't have in common is that there's no taken-from-life image of Genghis Khan and nobody knows what he really looked like, whereas we've all seen plenty of Hakuho. Another is that Genghis Khan never forgave anything.

Hakuho is 40 million times better - henkas, neko damashis, extra slaps and all. Don't believe you have to be horrid to be afraid of cats. Most animal phobias come from bad experiences - like getting scratched.

The photo-album "The happy cats in a sumo-beya" is on sale since the 7th, as part of the cat-boom in Japan. Fans (of the cats) gathered at Arashio-beya for a PR event. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1721908.html

The cat boom should be losing pace by now, but not for sumo cats (and I haven't heard what became of the "real" sumo cat as rikishi in the TV drama with Mainoumi as oyakata): 4 photo books are on sale now about the Arashio-beya cats, cat-oyakata Moru (12 ♂ ) and heya-guard Mugi (10 ♂ ). http://www.sankei.com/life/news/161105/lif1611050024-n1.html

"Arashio-beya's Moru & Mugi"

the other 2 are "Moru & Mugi - neko oyakata of a sumo-beya" and " - "Arashio-beya's sumo cats - Moru & Mugi and the 12 rikishi"

4 publishing companies within 5 weeks about nearly the same "trivia" - that's makes news as well - and all sold well at the start. Sokokurai now gets asked to sign those books at the jungyo. http://trendy.nikkeibp.co.jp/atcl/column/15/1032181/111500076/

I haven't seen any of that on YouTube yet - based in the manga "sumo-neko", which apparently still goes on http://www.sumo-neko.com/

the archive has it from no. 863 on: http://sumo-neko.tumblr.com/archive

The twitter has also many older ones: https://twitter.com/sumo_neko/media

The TV drama was on NHK-E, with the cat voice of Akebono http://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2039899/full/

All know thus that cats are not the thing for Hakuho - and consequently he rather got a dog as a present - an Akita-ken (made known in the world by the film "Hachi" in recent years - and Putin got one as a present) - as a token of Japan-Mongolia friendship. Hakuho apparently had mentioned that he likes this breed "I heard it's a dog close to the wolf". Registered name of the dog in the pedigree is Touki-go, and Hakuho is registered there with his real name - he calls it Shinba, using the same kanji that is in the name of all his children.

Hakuho took it for a walk at once: "Powerful. That's good keiko."
