Akinomaki 41,839 Posted February 24, 2017 (edited) Local Ura visited 3 primary schools in Kyoto - as part of the project "Kyo-sports dream-bank" to invite local pro-athletes to schools. So Ura could use the usual talk of Hakuho as a hint what to tell the kids, but it didn't sound as enthusiastic as from the master: "Not giving up in hard times is bound to lead to the fulfillment of dreams." No talk of bouts with Ura afterwards, only photo shoots. http://www.kyoto-np.co.jp/education/article/20170224000037 23 hours ago, Akinomaki said: Takekaze visited a primary school in his hometown Kita-Akita-city and promised the kids: "I'll gambarize for still quite a while." he rather did ude-zumo(arm wrestling) with them He did that also the next day at 2 schools in Akita-city http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASK2R4RWGK2RUBUB005.html Edited February 24, 2017 by Akinomaki

On 3/13/2016 at 03:32, mikawa said: As Asashosakari mentioned, Nagao Yuki is Tochiseiryu, currently hovering between Makushita and Sandanme. The kid who defeated Yuki in the documentary (Furukawa Haruki) is about to enter university. Kurihashi Ryu (aka 'Nice Guy Ryu') hasn't done anything of note since then (his record in wanpaku is qualified twice, losing in his first bout both times). Shinpo Kyoya has decided to enter Koyo University, starting this year. Iwamoto Ryuta (aka the slapper) may or may not have continued to do sumo since entering middle school, there's very little information about him nowadays. The kid who won in that famous wanpaku bout during the ending credits is none other than Sato, who is the one that's most likely to replace Onosho as the youngest sekitori. I saw this documentary for the first time a few years back. Early this year, while sorting my computer files looking for sumo related content, I chanced upon my copy of the documentary and re-watched it. After the re-watch, I was wondering if any of the kids featured on the documentary went on to go pro. The first time I saw Onosho in the top division, I thought "This guy seems familiar". After encountering this thread now, I finally reconciled this nagging feeling why Onosho looked familiar. Was that really Sato, now known as Takakeisho, in the credits bout? It's ironic that we see him a few times charging at his opponent ala what he did to Hakuho last basho. At least back then it worked for him. Hakuho must have seen the footage and was prepared if Takakeisho used it on him. Haha. I believe this documentary is at least or close 10 years old. It's right about now that a lot of the kids in the documentary who pursued sumo as a career to re-emerge and make their professional debuts. Onosho and Takakeisho (formerly known as Sato) had an early start as they dropped out of high school and skipped university respectively. Worked out for them so far. Yuki "The Genius" has got some work to do to catch up with those two. I wonder what Shinpo "The Giant" looks like now and is he still going to pursue pro sumo after university? Would have loved to see Ryuta "The Slapper" go pro too. Boy things in the sumo world are much different now. It's interesting to see how far some of the featured rikishi has done. Kyokutenho went on to win a yusho in five years time and now frequently commentates on sumo coverages (edit: And apparently, he's a stable head as well). Futeno struggled later in his career and is now a coach. Hakuho has just become Yokozuna back then. This documentary is an amazing time piece. Sato / Takakeisho has used that same fighting style ever since his wanpaku days, which has gotten him the Middle School Yokozuna title back in 2011 and now all the way up to Makuuchi. Shinpo Kyoya is currently in his 4th year at Toyo University, but isn't good enough to make it onto their all-conquering team. Here's a photo of Shinpo with his mum from 2014: Word has it that Ryuta no longer does sumo for one reason or other, I've certainly not seen his name pop up since wanpaku.

That's Sato / Takakeisho's signature move I guess. He's a pusher-thruster kind of guy according to the commentators in the NHK English broadcast so yeah. Damn! He grew a lot since the documentary. Well, it has been 10 years at least and he was at puberty so yeah. Biology hooo~~ Shinpo not making his university's sumo team? Is his sumo skills not on par with the best in university sumo in Japan now or Toyo University just have an abundance of good sumo wrestlers that even if he is good, there was just not enough room for him in the team that will compete in the tournament? I hope he gets better and make a good run at the pros. I guess Ryuta had a change of heart in the 10 years since his wanpaku days. Maybe the face slaps woke him up and realized he's interested in other things. All the best to him!
