Soccer has risen to a position just behind baseball and could even overtake it in the next decade or two if it continues growing. When I first came to Japan, basically every kid was doing baseball and soccer only late had it's first anime series to make it popular, early eighties Captain Tsubasa I think, then in the nineties Shoot! Japan qualifying for the 1998 World Cup then hosting the 2002 edition poured gasoline on those flames. The post 2010 explosion of Japanese players going to European leagues has further solidified soccer's growth. Baseball here still has the lead in money, live viewing figures, and online fandom but soccer has been rapidly closing the gap. As you said that was unthinkable 30 years ago.
