yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted September 26, 2012 (edited) OK, here's the deal: The following table shows the Career Income of all active (ex-)Sekitori. Plus that of a couple of recent retirees (in italics). The income is composed of the actual rank-dependent salary, the bimonthly basho bonus and the prize money for yusho and sansho. This has to be taken with several grains of salt. Firstly, I might have gotten some numbers wrong (especially in the basho bonus section). Secondly, there are a few active rikishi who actually have seen salary and price money increases. This I had to somehow compensate manually, so another source of error. Thirdly, the basho allowance for ranks below Juryo didn't go into this at all, as it's literally only a couple of Yen. Fourthly, I really don't know how the salaries around the Phantom Basho were handled, so the two extra months are not represented whatsoever. The figures are therefore pretty rough, even though they give the impression of being accurate. I simply didn't want to round anything in either direction. Lastly, for the $ and € equivalents I used some very rough multiplier that took the average of past exchange rates. Effectively, it's the Yen that is important. What's not represented at all is - of course - sponsors' money (also kensho) and other values that come for example with winning the Makuuchi yusho (there was a recent thread about that topic that I am going to link in here as soon as I have recovered from modeling the data into BBC). Kensho are probably a huge factor in Hakuho's actual income, for instance, so the top rankers are far better off than the table implies. yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted September 26, 2012 OK, after learning many things about "Regular Expressions" in Find/Replace routines, I'm now pretty positive that I can post an update of the table after every basho without having to kill someone. I apologize for the format of the last two columns. They should be aligned to the right, but then the BBC parser explodes.
Kuroyama 715 Posted September 27, 2012 (edited) Wow, good work! Shows pretty starkly how little these guys make compared to American athletes. A middlin-good MLB pitcher might pull down in a couple of years what Hakuho has made his entire career. (Also, possible typo. Is "Price money" supposed to be "Prize money"?) Edited September 27, 2012 by Kuroyama
yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted September 27, 2012 Yup, zhat's a typo. And "little" is a big word. As I already said, a lot of (significant) income sources are not represented at all. Kotoosu won't advertise the yohgurt for nothing. How much kensho does Hakuho collect in a typical basho? 250? 300?

Borislav 4 Posted September 27, 2012 How much kensho does Hakuho collect in a typical basho? 250? 300? Is kensho worth something like 30 000 yen, or about 300 euro?
Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted September 27, 2012 How much kensho does Hakuho collect in a typical basho? 250? 300? Is kensho worth something like 30 000 yen, or about 300 euro? In the context of these stats I say a kensho is worth 55,000 yen. 25,000 yen are withheld to pay taxes etc. I suppose for each rikishi a monthly calculation of taxes and other deductions from the gross income is done, and then he gets paid his net income (with the money in the kensho envelopes counted as prepaid net income). So, in fact, Hakuho will get a bit less per kensho then a lesser rikishi, just like he gets less net income out of any kinds of income (assuming a progressive tax rate). Since we only know about gross income, one kensho must count 55,000 yen. The advertiser actually pays 60,000 yen, but 5,000 yen go to the Kyokai for covering its kensho related expenses. yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted September 27, 2012 I'm just crunching more numbers. hakuho is rapidly approaching the 10.000 kensho border (which should be some record). This translates into 550.000.000 Yen. So if you check the table once more, the kensho have practically doubled his (gross) career income. Not to mention the 22 cars, 22 lifetime supplies of whatever etc. He might not have a salary like Johnny Majorleague, but he anyway could start to think now if he would like to take turns with Asashoryu in being Mongolian President and PM. Asashosakari 20,213 Posted September 27, 2012 Maybe, but all the money goes to the Kyokai, at least officially. Hmm, you sure...? If anybody's getting to play middleman in the money stream, I would guess it's the shisho. My impression was that the Kyokai only authorizes rikishis' commercial ventures but isn't actually a party to them.
botev1921 33 Posted September 27, 2012 Gosh, how can these guys even live normally. 4 years of sumo and you get the monthly salary of a football player in England? Sorry to say, but I find this disgraceful, considering how much more effort is required and what sort of commitment you need to show to even be in sumo for 4 years. Terrible! My impression was that the Kyokai only authorizes rikishis' commercial ventures but isn't actually a party to them. Not sure, but that's what I remember. I don't think anyone plays middleman or ever did. I was under the impression that everything goes to the Kyokai treasury, which does whatever it sees fit with the money, like passing part of it over to the shisho maybe.I don't think anyone in sumo is allowed to receive money from an outside source directly other than the Kyokai machine. krindel 688 Posted September 27, 2012 Gosh, how can these guys even live normally. 4 years of sumo and you get the monthly salary of a football player in England? Sorry to say, but I find this disgraceful, considering how much more effort is required and what sort of commitment you need to show to even be in sumo for 4 years. Terrible! Way of the world... The more popular a sport, the more money you can make out of it. It takes a huge commitment and effort to become a festival strongman or a circus acrobat, but the money in that is less than that of a darts champion... Football is watched by a billion or two people, sumo in Japan is behind baseball, football, K-1... and maybe some other sports. The Kyokai would be bankrupt in a month if they'd pay Premier League salaries to everyone. But then the PL is way overpaid.
Asashosakari 20,213 Posted September 27, 2012 The biggest allure for actually talented rikishi remains the possibility to stay as an oyakata after their active career, because that essentially means a secure $10,000/month job for the rest of your working life, as long as you manage to not be a complete idiot.

yorikiried by fate 2,038 Posted September 27, 2012 Personally, I think this is big money. I mean compare those figures with what a classical grappler can earn. Also not so much to get for Baruto in the bouncer business, I guess. Let's not compare sumo to multi-billion dollar marketing machines and Mickey Mouse sports. botev1921 33 Posted September 27, 2012 Not comparing, just being disgusted how unfair modern world has become.
dingo 1,473 Posted September 28, 2012 I think the perceived unfairness has more to do with overmonetization of some sports rather than with undervaluing some others. It's not only sports too, look at the whole 99% movement in the US. Sorry for the offtopic.

Asashosakari 20,213 Posted November 25, 2012 That should put all questions to rest why Miyabiyama doesn't quit early. His position on a career income table, how so? His per-basho earnings aren't that much higher than those of any other maegashira, maybe by 15%.
