Akinomaki 41,851 Posted June 12, 2013 At the Takushoku univ. Hokkaido campus they also want to produce Hakuho vegetables (potatoes, carrots etc.). Then they want to have together with the Hakuho rice a curry contest and make the superior entry into a marketable product.

Akinomaki 41,851 Posted June 16, 2015 (edited) It's the time of the year again for Hakuho to plant that Hakuho-rice - but it's getting tiresome: "My body is heavy and I sank (into the rice field)"Now producing also sake with that rice is planned.http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1492958.htmlAnother of his dreams still is to bring rice cultivation to Mongolia: global warming may lead to that possibility in 20, 30 years, and in 100 or 200 years, when the Mongolians are used to eat their own rice, they may remember that it was Hakuho who brought it there.http://www.daily.co.jp/newsflash/sumo/2015/06/16/0008126920.shtml?pg=2PR with miniature rice bales Edited June 16, 2015 by Akinomaki
Akinomaki 41,851 Posted October 24, 2015 On the 23rd, a new brand of sake made of Hakuho rice was presented in Sapporo: Hinoshita-kaizan, for the event of 5 years since Hakuho rice was created. Hakuho gave it that name: Hinoshita-kaizan is a title in sumo for a strong veteran rikishi of unequaled quality, not limited to a yokozuna.http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hokkaido/news/20151024-OYTNT50012.html

Churaumi 753 Posted June 12, 2017 Dumb question maybe, but is it officially Hakuho branded rice, or is it just a coincidence and he's doing PR for a company that has the same name? They sell a brand of rice at my local Asian megamarket called "Kagayaki," no relation.
Akinomaki 41,851 Posted June 12, 2017 (edited) In this thread you will find that Hakuho-rice is planted by Hakuho himself, he donates it to new recruits etc. and even sells it himself. He's not doing PR for a brand - his brand is PR for the city where it grows: On 17.2.2013 at 15:12, Akinomaki said: It's maybe even slightly different by now from the original rice variety in Hokkaido they took to "create" this Hakuho rice - his dream is to develop a rice to be grown in Mongolia: On 19.6.2011 at 01:52, Asashosakari said: - taking part in a rice planting ceremony in Takikawa-shi on Hokkaido on June 11 with local school children and... ...with his wife and eldest daughter (his son was also around, says Sports Hochi): (The headband reads "Hakuho Rice". Apparently I didn't post about it last summer - Hakuho has been organizing some sort of cooperative effort with agricultural institutes in Takikawa with the goal of finding rice varieties that can grow well in the Mongolian climate and ultimately introducing them there.) still the same on the headband, and now also on the t-shirt o Edited June 12, 2017 by Akinomaki

Kaminariyuki 519 Posted June 13, 2017 Rice paddy shiko, love it! And, I'd figured Hakuho for a tater guy... Five year thread on Hakuho rice, too. I'm guessing he probably has the hang of it by now. Very hard work to do that all day, although clearly this is mostly for the photos and publicity.
Akinomaki 41,851 Posted June 7, 2018 (edited) Time to plant Hakuho rice again: Hakuho was in Takigawa for the yearly event - the rice it is based on is "yumepirika", which got the top "special A" rank for the 3rd year. Akinomaki 41,851 Posted August 29, 2019 Not much was heard of Hakuho rice this year. Hakuho meanwhile on the 26th has helped with kids at another rice field, in Komatsu, Ishikawa - to harvest rice for the top member of the "gods of sake brewing" Nototouji 能登杜氏, Mr Noguchi 農口尚彦. vid o o o
