I have the results in table form from Achiyama :-D . I will put them here later today (to give a chance to the referees to announce the winners first.) As far as I can tell, 6 of the 8 matches were decided in normal time, one was decided in extra time, and one went to penalties, namely the cup match between Andonishiki and Kintamayama....

Andonishiki and Kintamayama penalty shoot-out....

Let's toss a coin to see who goes first. Heads will be Andonishiki, Tails will be Kintamayama.....

I will be using a Thai coin for this, as the modern Hong Kong coins, don't have any heads on them (and I don't have an old one - still in circulation - with Queen Elizabeth's head on it, on me...)

It's Heads! Andonishiki will take the first penalty kick.....

He pounds it into the far corner with Spain.

Andonishiki O????

Kintamayama ?????

Kintamayama is also looking confident....

Germany!

Andonishiki O????

Kintamayama O????

The keeper is trying to put Andonishiki off....

Uh-oh.... France.

Andonishiki OX???

Kintamayama O????

Kintamayama strikes it clean.... Spain!

Andonishiki OX???

Kintamayama OO???

It's an early lead... Andonishiki - Netherlands - sails way over the crossbar!

Andonishiki OXX??

Kintamayama OO???

Kintamayama - France, oops.

Andonishiki OXX??

Kintamayama OOX??

Andonishiki - Poland!!! Brave choice...

Andonishiki OXXX?

Kintamayama OOX??

Kintamayama can win it with his next kick....

England!

Andonishiki OXXX?

Kintamayama OOXX?

Andonishiki must score this one to stay in the competition...

Germany!

Andonishiki OXXXO

Kintamayama OOXX?

Lots of pressure on Kintamayama's next kicker....

Netherlands!

Andonishiki OXXXO

Kintamayama OOXXX

So, we go to sudden death....

Andonishiki - Russia!

Andonishiki OXXXOX

Kintamayama OOXXX

Kintamayama - Russia (same mistake!)

Andonishiki OXXXOX

Kintamayama OOXXXX

Andonishiki - England!

Andonishiki OXXXOXX

Kintamayama OOXXXX

Kintamayama - Croatia!

Andonishiki OXXXOXX

Kintamayama OOXXXXX

Andonishiki - Italy! Is that the winning penalty?

Andonishiki OXXXOXXO

Kintamayama OOXXXXX

Kintamayama - Italy! - No it isn't!!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXO

Kintamayama OOXXXXXO

Andonishiki - Croatia!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXO

Kintamayama - Russia!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXOX

Andonishiki - Czech Republic!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOXX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXOX

Kintamayama - Poland!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOXX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXOXX

We are now down to our 11th and final penalty takers (before re-start from number 1...)

Andonishiki - Ukraine!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOXXX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXOXX

Kintamayama - Portugal! It's in! The crowds go wild!!

Andonishiki OXXXOXXOXXX

Kintamayama OOXXXXXOXXO

Kintamayama wins 0-0 (after extra time), 4-3 on penalties. Phew!

wait a sec. why check rep didnt score my penalty ?

I think only the 4 teams that made it to the semis are counted. We both have France and it was not counted and I have England which was not counted either.

My view is that a tournament like the euro is a total crapshoot. All prior knowledge of anything (like, say, sumo..) won't help anyone. I'll just go with the flow and my gut feelings. I seriously don't think that in this format where there is no room for mistakes anyone can statistically deduce who will win.

Then, Germany wins.

Hmm, your view is not supported too much by the results... Prior events look darn similar to this Euro basho as the WC 2006 semifinals were exactly the same except France for Spain back then (and Spain may indeed have beaten France in a rather close game in the first ko round). I just hope that Germany will beat Italy for the first time in a WC or EC after four losses and three draws. I am cautiously optimistic as the current Italian team likely isn't better than the one from 2006 but the German team is much better, and it was a close game.

My memory was not quite right, I found a good page with all results, and it was four draws in four group games and three losses in three ko games, two of them after extra time (both WC semi finals). The only game out of seven decided in 90 minutes was just the WC 1982 final. Expecting a draw after 90 minutes might be a good suggestion for the Bench Euro game according to the history...

Cup: Jakusotso beats Xiao Tan 1:0

I might be wrong, but isn't it 2:0 due to Italy being my © team?

(Not that it matters much anyway...)

Okay, I need to do the following...

  1. Check all results from the quarter-finals
  2. Publish the confirmed results
  3. Show the match-ups for the next round - along with the referee
  4. Update the Outstanding Performance / Golden Boot Award
  5. Dig out and publish the rules for the semi-final matches
  6. Work out the rules for penalty shoot-outs for final matches. (Last time, we had two matches to predict on 3rd-4th play-off in addition to the actual final match.)
  7. Work out rules for the finals.
  8. I think that's it

Yes, 2:0, and Pandaazuma lost 1:0 only to Harinezumi.

Referees to be determined by tossing a coin.... Each referee will get either a Cup and a Saucer semifinal, or a Plate and a Bowl semifinal. They can't referee themselves....

After several tosses, Andonishiki and Achiyama are chosen for Cup and Saucer bouts. Chabonowaka and XiaoTan are selected for Plate and Bowl matches.

Okay, I still need to do the following... I'll work on 5. onwards tomorrow morning - about 12 hours away - after I have had some sleep, and so can think straight (the problem with the England match going to penalties, meant that I only got a couple of hours sleep last night / this morning.)

Edit: If another player has the time to dig out the semi-final rules from the Bench World Cup (before I wake up), please go ahead and publish them here. I can't remember them being changed....

(The final rules will need to be modified, due to one less match to predict on.)

Sorry for the big delay with this admin - I've been having problems!

Penalty Takers for the Finals

You need to send me your penalty takers for the 'finals' / last round of this game.

These need to be sent to me before kick-off of the first Semi-final match (Wednesday, 8:45 pm, Poland time).

Please arrange in the order of the final positions of the four teams.... 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

Please also send me the time of the first goal in the finals. If no

goals are scored in normal and extra time, the first goal will be

considered to be the first penalty scored in a penalty shoot-out. A

prediction of '46 minutes' (etc) will be considered to be the 1st

minute of the second half, unless stated otherwise.

The penalty shoot-out will be as follows....

3 penalty goals awarded for predicting the World Cup winner, 2 penalty

goals for predicting the runner-up. 1 penalty

goal for predicting the 'third placed team'*. 0 penalty goals for the 'fourth placed

team'*. The sudden death starts after the first two slots. If no

winner can be had during this time, there is an extra penalty goal to

be awarded to the player whose prediction of the time of the first

goal in the match is the closest to the actual time of it being

scored.

*The third placed team is determined as the team that did best whilst losing in the semi-finals. This will be based on 90 mins, then 120 mins, then penalties. So, if one match goes to extra time, the losing team automatically defeats the team in the match that lost in normal time. Goal differences, goals scored etc will be taken into account.

If it is impossible to separate the two losing teams, as they end up with identical losses, then no penalty goals will be awarded for either team.

Finalised rules for the Semi-finals

These are the rules for the semi-finals

I think we won't allow any further extra teams to our squads. Otherwise too many of us will have all four on their squad. Also, you can still win your match (on penalties), if you have no teams left!

We are now breaking the matches into 'three' parts.

Namely the results of the first half, the results of the second half, and the results of extra time (if no extra-time, this counts as a 0-0 draw). Penalty kicks are not included.

NB: This is the results for that time period 'only' (not accumulative), so if we look at the 'real' results of the quarter finals, it would be as follows:-

Czech Rep vs Portugal

1st half: Czech Rep 0-0 Portugal (Both teams draw)

2nd half: Czech Rep 0-1 Portugal (Portugal win)

Extra Time: Czech Rep 0-0 Portugal (Both teams draw)

Germany vs Greece

1st half: Germany 1-0 Greece (Germany win)

2nd half: Germany 3-2 Greece (Germany win)

Extra Time: Germany 0-0 Greece (Both teams draw)

Spain vs France

1st half: Spain 1-0 France (Spain win)

2nd half: Spain 1-0 France (Spain win)

Extra Time: Spain 0-0 France (Both teams draw)

England vs Italy

1st half: England 0-0 Italy (Both teams draw)

2nd half: England 0-0 Italy (Both teams draw)

Extra Time: England 0-0 Italy (Both teams draw)

Players need to label which part of the match they are predicting. Remember that you predict for all parts of the match for the teams still on your roster. So if you have all four teams, you will have 12 slots in total. Label as follows:- (1st) = first half, (2nd) = second half, (ET) = Extra time.

Also remember to highlight your (E) team (from the previous round - if still in), your © and ® teams - if you are lucky enough to still have them!

However.... Special rules for special teams ® and © teams. These have their 'special powers' only once, for the first slot that team is in the player's line-up. After that, they are treated as normal (N) teams for their other two slots.

Example line-up... Let's pretend that Spain is my ® team... It only has its special rules for where it first appears in the line-up.

Jejima: 1. Portugal (E)(1st), 2. Spain ®(E.T.), 3. Portugal (E)(E.T.) 4. Portugal (E) (2nd), 5. Spain (2nd), 6. Spain (1st)

Comment: B'ah!

Normal time rules.

As before.

Extra time rules.

The chain restarts for extra time from the slot after the one that ended the normal time results.

Penalties:

I have your lists already.

Drone rules...

All teams already knocked out of the World Cup are removed from the

drone's line-up.

Drones order of their squad will be first team (1st), first team (2nd), first team (ET), second team (1st), second team (2nd) etc, where 'first team' means the first team in their previous line-up (for the quarter-finals) still in the Euro 2012.

Semi-drones....

If any player omits to give the 'time' for the match, E.g. 1. Spain, 2. Germany etc, it will be assumed to be 1. Spain (1st), 2. Spain (2nd), 3. Spain (ET), 4. Germany (1st) etc

I think that's all points covered. Please send me any queries quickly :-)

I wouldn't allow extra teams for the semi final round already in the Bench Euro. With only 16 teams to start with (compared to 32) the top selection groups (yokozuna, ozeki, sekiwake) are much smaller, so even one extra team was enough for several players to get all semi finalists (I for example and I am not even doing well thanks to Ireland). With a second extra team many players will have a complete squad I think, making the game less interesting.

Edit: Oh, I see you changed the rule already to that effect...

first, thanks to jejima for posting the results to the bouts i was supposed to be gyojiing in the quarterfinals. i checked into the forum a couple of hours after the post, and seeing that done tried to come up with an interesting spin on the results, but fell short, so just left it as is. second, i'll be sure not to repeat my disappearing act this round. and finally, i'm refereeing XiaoTan vs Rannohana in the Plate, and Harinezumi vs Mischashimaru in the bowl. i already have teams from XiaoTan, Harinezumi, and Mischashimaru, and await that from Rannohana. i got Rannohana's lineup in email last round, so expect the same this time. i'll send him a note to be sure.

I am waiting for Jejima's squad.

Kameumi,

Your squad is incomplete. You didn't use all 3 teams left in your squad. If I don't receive your revised line-up till the deadline (1h before the kick-off of the match) I have to use a Drone squad.

Kintamayama,

Please, doublecheck your squad. You are supposed to use the ® symbol only once. If you want to revise your squad do it by the deadline (1 h

before the kick-off of the match).
