Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted December 31, 2011 Welcome to another round of the Makushita Game! Feel free to participate, there's still some space in Makuuchi division. The deadline is shonichi 8 AM JST. ================================== Here are the rules in short form: 1) Slice the Makushita banzuke into 15 equal brackets (ms1-ms4, ms5-ms8 etc.). 2) Pick one rikishi from each bracket. 3) Send your selection via the entry form (thanks to Gusoyama) 4) Done. Here are detailed rules for the rule-minded: 1) You collect win points for your picked rikishi, and these win points will be converted into a win-loss record. If a rikishi finishes with a MK, you won't get any win points. If a rikishi finshes 4-3, you'll get 0.5 win point for your overall win point tally. A 5-2 gives you a full win point, a 6-1 nets 1.5 win points, and a 7-0 adds two full win points (if a rikishi has an eighth bout, the win points depend on the result of this last bout: e.g. a 5-3 after 4-3 adds 0.75 win points; a 4-4 after 4-3 is treated like the 4-3, i.e. with 0.5 WPs). The sum total of win points across 15 rikishi amounts to the win-loss record for a player (if necesseary it will be rounded up or down based on banzuke requirements). 2) The player with the most win points gets the yusho. In case of a tie, brackets will be compared pair-wise (in descending order down the banzuke) until a winner can be determined. 3) Sansho prizes are awarded as follows (all sansho require a KK): 3a) Shukun-sho for the player who picked the yusho winner. In case of a tie, other 7-0 rikishi will be compared, followed by 6-1 rikishi in descending order etc., until a winner can be determined. 3b) Kanto-sho for the player whose rikishi have netted the most wins. 3c) Gino-sho: for the player with the most unusual picks - total sum of wins of a rikishi divided by number of players who picked him. 4) A kosho application is not necessary. In case of a single absence the player keeps his/her rank, if possible. The second consecutive kyujo basho will be counted as 0-0-15, and the third kyujo in a row leads to the retirement of the player. 5) Kyujo rikishi: Because there is little time between kyujo announcements and the start of the basho, players are allowed to replace a kyujo rikishi with a 0-0 rikishi or 0-1 rikishi until day 2 of the basho (8 AM JST). 6) Promotions (these rules might change): 6a) Ozeki promotion requirements: three KK in a row with at least 31 wins total; Sekiwake rank at the crucial third basho; alternatively, a 3-basho cumulative "position score" below 15 (if you finish first, your position score is 1; if you are tied for second place with three other players, your position score will be 3.5 etc.) 6b) Yokozuna promotion: Two consecutive yusho and overall good manners. Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted January 7, 2012 (edited) Uh oh! it's only a few hours until the Makushita Game deadline, and I was about to enter the picks. I was wondering why the number of entries was so low (only eight so far). At that moment I received a PM from crall who wondered whether his picks came through (he did not receive a confirmation mail). Upon closer inspection, I neither found the picks from crall in my inbox, nor the ones from Itachi (who sent a correction, using my regular e-mail address). It's almost certain that other picks were lost as well. I have no clue what happened here. I will ask Gusoyama whether he has a chance to retrieve lost entries. If you have the time it's better if you send your picks in this thread. However, if the lost mails cannot be found by Gusoyama on his page, I think it is in the spirit of fairness to cancel this edition of the Makushita Game... Here are the entries that arrived in my mailbox: Holleshoryu Fay Achiyama Kitanoyama Meyeryu kuroimori Gonzaburow Shiyonofuji Takanorappa (at 07:40 JST) Edited January 7, 2012 by Randomitsuki
Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted January 7, 2012 Hm. I've tried the form as well. There was a confirmation screen that a pick was sent to my e-mail address. However, it hasn't arrived yet (do you typically receive those confirmation mails immediately? As I do not use the form, I don't know). Perhaps they'll arrive with a delay - that has happened before. But then again, some entries that were sent today, went through. I'm at a loss.
Asashosakari 20,273 Posted January 7, 2012 Hm. I've tried the form as well. There was a confirmation screen that a pick was sent to my e-mail address. Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted January 8, 2012 Maybe it's related with the mail problems in the Salary Cap game? For what it's worth, here are my picks as I entered them: Chiyootori Sadanoumi Azumaryu Sakumayama Saishin Chiyomaru Kawanari Kazafuzan Chiyoo Tatsu Amatsu Takatoshi Hokaho Wakarikido Wakamisho
Flohru 178 Posted January 8, 2012 I also didn't get a confirmation mail (and my entry seems to have been lost) which I thought strange, so I resend my entry and made a screen shot of it. If that will be counted (and the edition isn't cancelled completely), I'm glad to send it to you. My team was/is: Chiyootori Sadanoumi Hishofuji Sakumayama Takanoiwa Chiyomaru Takageppo Kotoyutaka Chiyoo Kotomisen Notozakura Wakaryusei Nakanokuni Kotodaishin Wakamisho

Itachi 396 Posted January 8, 2012 Well, maybe we can score an unoffical contest if the missing picks get posted. Here's what I had sent (with the change that R-zeki received). Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted January 8, 2012 random, u didnt get my entry ? Nope, unfortunately not. The list of players above plus those who have shown their entries in this thread plus my picks plus Asashosakari's picks - that's all. I haven't heard from Gusoyama yet, but I am almost certain that the entries are lost. Unless you hear anything different from me, or unless someone convices me to do otherwise, the basho will not officially count. Nonetheless I will report the results from the 15 entries that I have. Gusoyama 105 Posted January 9, 2012 Unfortunately, the Makushita game entries do not store in any database. I should fix that, but have not done so thus far. Right now, it just spits out a couple of emails. My apologies, I guess that my host was not sending emails for a couple of days.

Itachi 396 Posted January 10, 2012 I like to work out my picks on paper and then submit them. This way, I always have a record of my selections. If you use a spreadsheet (such as the one I have been sharing), you could mark the players you selected in various ways without needing to generate a paper copy. Since no one expects this sort of system malfunction and yet they occur periodically, it makes sense to protect your investment of time and effort in making these selections by leaving a trail for yourselves. Shiyonofuji/Kaiopectate 2 Posted January 10, 2012 I use the Excel spreadsheet that Itachi offers, and boldface my picks, then prepare lists from that. Unfortunately, I did not save the spreadsheet after bolding, so I had to re-do all my picks and resubmit. Unfortunately, my picks WERE received: By the looks of things so far, I wish they hadn't been.

Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted January 15, 2012 Standings after nakabi: This is a high-scoring basho so far. It's halftime, and the scores need downgrading already. Nonetheless, eight out of 15 players have crossed the KK line. Shiyonofuji stays in the lead, with Ozeki Meyeryu trailing by half a point. With his third place, Sekiwake Randomitsuki might have achieved Ozeki promotion if this had been a regular basho. Randomitsuki 2,900 Posted January 19, 2012 Standings after day 12: The standings now include Torafujii whose picking patterns shamelessly robbed me of two sansho. But I believe in any late entries, although I might become a bit skeptical if a notorious someone (who never played Makushita Game) should suddenly claim that he picked Chiyootori-Wakanoshima-Hakiai-Sakumayama-Takanoiwa-Terashita-Kamei-Kotoyutaka-Chiyoo-Tatsu-Tamadaiki-Rendaiyama-Hokaho-Daishoiwa-Akinokawa for a total of 17.25 win points. Then again, high scoring seems to be the order of the day. 13 out of 16 players are in KK territory which would have turned banzuke making into something nigthmarish.
