Kintamayama 45,567 Posted July 25, 2011 The secret with Takanoyama is to never let him get hold of you. A Miyabiyama-like tsuppari attack might be successful night after night, simply because there's simply not enough body mass on the Thin Man to take that punishment at that level. I was thinking the opposite-get him into a bear-hug yotsu-don't let him jump around you, and he's done. At least that's what happened in most of the bouts he lost this basho. aderechelsea 125 Posted July 25, 2011 It took him 10 years to gain 12 kgs ( 27lbs).I seriously doubt he will make it to 130.... let's imagine the reasons. you come from the Czech Rep. and you get stuck in a heya for the most part of your day. Since you are skinny by nature and you come from Europe, you concentrate on weight training along with the traditional keiko. You hate the local food but there is not much to do about it. You don't get a salary. your Oyakata and your mentor tell you that you need to gain weight but you are thinking "i may put on some belly but no one guarantees i'am going to be successful in sekitori promotion, so i am gonna be stuck with the tsukebito duties, the zero salary and a body i dislike and the ladies dislike too." but then you manage to become a sekitori your way and this is a much bigger victory. Now you get other people being your tsukebito. You have money to spend and more ladies to share your body. Suddenly logic tells you to do whatever it takes to stay in the top division. You gain weight and start looking like Tochinoshin. You stay at the sekitori ranks for years and retire happily ever after. (the above story is totally fictional.) Igordemorais 75 Posted July 25, 2011 I truly hope this new position gives him the focus and drive necessary to do what it takes. :)

But.... Let's continue to pretend. In some other dimension, he squares off with Hakuho. Or Baruto. Or Aran. Or any of the Crane family. As he currently is today, Takanoyama would last as long as they would allow the bout to last. When your mawashi is bigger than you are, and one of the above has absolutely NO trouble lifting the likes of a baby elephant out of the ring, the guess is just how far the Thin Man's butt will travel. My very first impression of him was that of a young kid wearing a black inner tube, the kind you wear when going to the pool or the beach. But he's definitely got the moves. He just might not have the time.
aderechelsea 125 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) i don't want to sound like i am the biggest fan of Takanoyama but your argument has just one small problem. In order to fight the above mentioned wrestlers he needs to dominate the lower makuuchi first or post consecutive small KK in a matter of 6-9 months. Both ways will be either indicative of him being too good for the makuuchi-juryo meatgrinder or it will give him a lot of time to beef up. he just needs to win more than lose against the likes of Shotenro, Sagatsukasa, Tochinowaka, daido, Kitataiki etc etc ... not THAT unbelievable after all. shumitto 418 Posted July 25, 2011 You don't get a salary. A salary they don't have but they do have some money to buy some "stuff" they want. And however little, without bills to pay and with everything free, this money can be used the way they wish.

shumitto 418 Posted July 26, 2011 the difference is quite a lot. Japanese and foreigners alike have gained weight through life in heya and you suggest his case is different and that "at liberty" he will finally achieve what he hasn't in the last decade or so. Good if you are right, I like his sumo and would be pleased to watch him regularly in Makuuchi, but I doubt it.
aderechelsea 125 Posted July 26, 2011 if you read my post again you will get my point. i'll boil it down to one sentence. The new life that his sekitori rank can provide can be luring and convince him finally that being "pretty" is not his top priority anymore, but he will gain the weight needed in order to maintain that particular lifestyle of more money, less chores, people doing yours instead and even more ladies to meet. Kintamayama 45,567 Posted July 26, 2011 I distinctly remember reading an interview with him a few years back where he said he did everything he could to gain weight but just couldn't. He ate and ate and drank and drank but simply couldn't add the weight. Anyone else remember that? Jaruslav?

Pikenoyama 27 Posted August 2, 2011 Before the Nagoya basho Takanoyama has visited the Czech Republic for the first time in 10 years. This obviously being possible thanks to his reaching of Juryo division and becoming sekitori. On June 14 he met Japanese ambassador in Prague Mr. Kunikata in his office. For those fluent in Czech here is the link on ambassy pages: http://www.cz.emb-japan.go.jp/cz/bunkanewscz.html. (Welcome...). I

sekitori 492 Posted August 3, 2011 (edited) I enjoy watching small athletes compete successfully in sports dominated by very large ones. I always was a fan of Calvin Murphy who played in the NBA for thirteen years and did extremely well against much taller and larger men. He averaged almost 18 points and over 4 assists per game in just over 1,000 games played. At 5 Edited August 3, 2011 by sekitori
Igordemorais 75 Posted August 25, 2011 Any word on whether he was promoted to Makuuchi for the September basho? I still think that we will see him gain weight very soon, no disrespect, but there is no man on earth that can keep from gaining at least 10kgs with a 2-month 500mg a week testosterone cycle + hypercaloric shakes. Being a small foreigner or a big Japanese has no bearing on the decisions. The records are what count, and I personally think he has the numbers easily. Kintamayama 45,567 Posted August 26, 2011 "If I do get promoted, I will be sending my parents the banzuke. The last time I sent them a banzuke was so long ago I don't remember when it was. I marked my name on it so they can see, but the letters were so small it was sad. This time, the letters will be much bigger, and I think my parents can recognize my shikona by now..," said Takanoyama after keiko yesterday. If he does get the promotion, he will be only the third rikishi to pass through Juryo in one basho since the 6-basho system was established in 1958.
Jaak 7 Posted August 26, 2011 If he does get the promotion, he will be only the third rikishi to pass through Juryo in one basho since the 6-basho system was established in 1958. And the previous two were unlucky indeed. Ichihara was in makuuchi for a total of two basho (best result 8-7 at M16e, best rank M13w), and never returned despite turning into Kiyoseumi. Daikiko was in makuuchi for a single basho (5-10 at M15e), and never returned (also was Hayashi and Terunoumi). The last before that was Yonekawa. And he never returned to juryo; for he soon turned into Asashio and spent a total of 8 basho in maegashira.
Igordemorais 75 Posted August 26, 2011 That does not bode well. Perhaps going slow is better to raise confidence instead of jumping into the deep end. Jesus Christ lets not forget the original point of this topic: he is a 100kgs man ( 225lbs more or less) fighting men with 40% more body mass than him. Perhaps going slow is better to raise confidence instead of jumping into the deep end.Jesus Christ lets not forget the original point of this topic: he is a 100kgs man ( 225lbs more or less) fighting men with 40% more body mass than him. 101 kg and 187 cm. Next lightest juryo is Shironoryu at 115,2 kg, 178 cm. Lightest makuuchi is Sagatsukasa, 128,8 kg, 177 cm. But the next lightest makuuchi is the yusho winner Harumafuji at 129,1 kg, 185 cm. Ama was just 113 kg on his juryo debut. Spent 4 basho in juryo, with 1 juryo yusho and 1 makekoshi. Never returned to juryo after makuuchi debut, started makuuchi with 4 straight kachikoshi and never fell below M11. Ama was still 113 kg on his komusubi debut (4-11). By his return to sanyaku, he was 124 kg - and then stayed in sanyaku for 11 basho straight.
