Makushita Game Nagoya 2010

Recommended Posts

Welcome to another round of the Makushita Game!

Feel free to participate, there's still some space in Makuuchi division.

The deadline is shonichi 8 AM JST.

==================================

Here are the rules in short form:

1) Slice the Makushita banzuke into 15 equal brackets (ms1-ms4, ms5-ms8 etc.).

2) Pick one rikishi from each bracket.

3) Send your selection via the entry form (thanks to Gusoyama)

4) Done.

Here are detailed rules for the rule-minded:

1) You collect win points for your picked rikishi, and these win points will be converted into a win-loss record. If a rikishi finishes with a MK, you won't get any win points. If a rikishi finshes 4-3, you'll get 0.5 win point for your overall win point tally. A 5-2 gives you a full win point, a 6-1 nets 1.5 win points, and a 7-0 adds two full win points (if a rikishi has an eighth bout, the win points depend on the result of this last bout: e.g. a 5-3 after 4-3 adds 0.75 win points; a 4-4 after 4-3 is treated like the 4-3, i.e. with 0.5 WPs). The sum total of win points across 15 rikishi amounts to the win-loss record for a player (if necesseary it will be rounded up or down based on banzuke requirements).

2) The player with the most win points gets the yusho. In case of a tie, brackets will be compared pair-wise (in descending order down the banzuke) until a winner can be determined.

3) Sansho prizes are awarded as follows (all sansho require a KK):

3a) Shukun-sho for the player who picked the yusho winner. In case of a tie, other 7-0 rikishi will be compared, followed by 6-1 rikishi in descending order etc., until a winner can be determined.

3b) Kanto-sho for the player whose rikishi have netted the most wins.

3c) Gino-sho: for the player with the most unusual picks - total sum of wins of a rikishi divided by number of players who picked him.

4) A kosho application is not necessary. In case of a single absence the player keeps his/her rank, if possible. The second consecutive kyujo basho will be counted as 0-0-15, and the third kyujo in a row leads to the retirement of the player.

5) Kyujo rikishi: Because there is little time between kyujo announcements and the start of the basho, players are allowed to replace a kyujo rikishi with a 0-0 rikishi or 0-1 rikishi until day 2 of the basho (8 AM JST).

6) Promotions (these rules might change):

6a) Ozeki promotion requirements: three KK in a row with at least 31 wins total; Sekiwake rank at the crucial third basho; alternatively, a 3-basho cumulative "position score" below 15 (if you finish first, your position score is 1; if you are tied for second place with three other players, your position score will be 3.5 etc.)

6b) Yokozuna promotion: Two consecutive yusho and overall good manners.

It was reported that the Makushita Game entry form is not working at the moment. As a consequence, I haven't received any entries yet (but a nice pic from Kintamayama). I'll keep you updated on the current confirmation crisis. If you so desire, you could also send your picks

a) within this thread;

b) via e-mail (I think this works from the Forum); or

c) via personal message.

Sorry for the inconvenience (both yours and mine).

For the same reason as I retire from Sandanme Game & Jo-Game, I will also intai from Makushita Game.

Time issues made me lose interest in lower divisions. I will still follow a few potentials, but no longer whole divisions.

Thanks for the nice time the game has brought me for a couple of years.

Standings after day 2:

Wow, we have started with very low scoring for the second time in a row. There are a number of kadoban-Ozeki, so they should better watch out! Yes, I am talking about you, Randomitsuki...

On a much more positive side, I am delighted to see that shin-deshin kuroimori leads the things after two days. The pursuers are Asafan and Fay.

Standings after day 4:

Not much progress in terms of overall records. Just like after 2 days, the best score is currently a 6-9 record which is slightly worrying. kuroimori stays on top, but has to share the lead with Ozeki Meyeryu. Kintamayama and Rinshukai are close behind.

Standings after day 6:

Now this basho has turned from strange to bewildering (next stop flabbergasting). After two days, the best record was 6-9 (which is quite good). After four days, the best record was 6-9 (which is sub-par). And after six days, the best score is 6-9 (which is abysmal). Hence, there is a funny shuffle in standings on a daily basis. At the moment, Kintamayama enjoys the top spot. He leads over the trio of Imumaru, Randomitsuki, and shin-deshi shumitto.

I always wondered and just realized why Kintamayama was listed as an Ozeki in the standings - I couldn't remember handing him the corresponding papers. Of course, it was a hand-eye coordination glitch thingie mix-up with Ozeki Kitanoyama who took a basho off. The most recent standings are amended.

And here I was wondering why I'm not listed as a Yokozuna, which I feel I highly deserve as the person who was the first to have a site dedicated to Makushita results before the big corporation took over. My actual results in the game have no bearing, I feel..

Standings after nakabi:

None of us is heading for KK. If it goes on like that, there will be no sansho this time around. Kintamayama defends the top spot, and now former Ozeki Doitsuyama, Fay, and shumitto are being tied for second place.

crall, Meyeryu, and Randomitsuki are all kadoban-Ozeki amidst this mess, and it currently looks as if the number of Ozeki on the Aki Banzuke will be cut in half.

Standings after day 10:

Really. Who needs a kachi-koshi when there are so many other ways to have fun?

Currently we have a three-way lead between former Ozeki Doitsuyama, Ozeki of the hearts Kintamayama, and Ozeki of the future shumitto. They are all firmly located just below the KK line. Fun ensues.

It might be that the final records must be upgraded, but I am not sure how I should handle kadoban-Ozeki. I am tempted to demote them nonetheless (for doing something not so brilliant at the most inane opportunity). How do other banzuke-makers treat such cases?

For the lowest division banzuke, I calculate a ranking number based on their ranking going in and their score in the tournament relative to the median score. Then I sort them based on this result and those with the best results get placed first on the banzuke. An ozeki keeps his/her ozeki status unless they are kadoban.

My rule for S4 is that "fixed" targets (i.e. 8-7 to beat kadoban, 10-5 to achieve re-promotion) get adjusted for each full win that the average player's result falls short of 7.5 wins. In other words, if you're kadoban with a 7-8 and the average number of wins is 6.4 you get lucky, if it's 6.6 you don't.

Now, if only we actually had ozeki in S4...

Standings after day 12:

Wow, what a change for a change. All of a sudden and completely out of left field, no less than six players straddled the KK line, some of them decisively. Ozeki Meyeryu has taken the lead, while Doitsuyama and Kintamayama share the jun-yusho spot. New player shumitto, Ozeki Asashosakari, and jo-joing Imumaru are on the sweet spot of the arasoi.

crall has a good chance to escape kadoban at 7.25 WPs, whereas for me it's about time for a Sekiwake demotion.

Imumaru has the shukun-sho lead (if Asashosakari were eligible, he would lead in this category).

Doitsuyama and Kintamayama share the kanto-sho lead (which otherwise would have gone to Meyeryu).

Kintamayama leads for the gino-sho.

Side note:

Number of players who picked Jumonji (6-0): 0

Number of players who picked Gorikiyama (6-0): 0

Number of players who picked Shironoryu (highest ranked rikishi at 5-1): 0
