Which rikishi are married?

Recommended Posts

The English commentators were talking about Kyokutenho acquiring Japanese citizenship and in conjunction talked about his commitment to Japan (example: he did not marry a Mongolian girl) - all that got me thinking about, which rikishi are married, and which are not - for some I know, but does anybody have a comprehensive list?

Cheers

I'm the last man to ask on those matters, but according to www.japan-sumo.ru - the following active or recently active sekitori or past sekitori are married:

Takanohana (***)

Asashoryu (*)

Kaio

Takanonami

Tochinonada (*)

Tamakasuga

Kotonowaka (*)

Hayateumi (****)

Kyokushuzan (**)

Toki (**)

Kaiho (*)

Chiyotenzan (**)

Hamanoshima

Oginishiki (**)

Wakanoyama (***)

Asanowaka (*)

Tokitsuumi (*)

Kitazakura (*)

The asteriks naturally mean the number of children. This should be mostly correct, although quite possibly somewhat out of date.

We can add soon to be married Tochisakae and Oikari, as well as Akebono, since Takanohana is on the list..

According to Ozumo 2003.11 Asanowaka has two daughters, Chiyotenzan one son and Hayateumi no children (all else the same as the list).

Hayateumi's children came as a package when he found a woman who has 4 children and I guess has married her too. So Hayateumi doesn't have his own children yet I suppose.

Kotonowaka (*)

Koto has 3 kids I think.

Just curious, Kaikitsune-zeki: where did you hear or read that?

I've got a couple of pics of him with little Masakatsu, but I didn't know he had more children.

Former Kotonishiki has 3 kids too, former Kotoinazuma has 5 if I remember correctly... looks like Sadogatake stable won't have any problems with finding enough deshi in the future :-O

Wow, so Musashimaru, Musoyama, Miyabiyama, Dejima, Buyuzan are all not married? Something in the water at Musashigawa-beya? (I am not worthy...)

I can't remember where I got that but our Rijicho had similar impression so possibly true! Someone could confirm who has the knowledge.

Okay ;-) here's the information from the latest issue of Sumo ( 2004, Jan ):

Married sekitori ( * = the number of children ) in the Hatsu Banzuke order:

East side!

Asashoryu (*)

Kaio

Tochinonada(*)

Toki (**)

Tokitsuumi (*)

Takanonami

Kotonowaka (*)

Kitazakura(*)

Asanowaka (**)

Hayateumi (*)

Ooikari ( engaged )

West side!

Kyokushuzan (**)

Tochisakae ( engaged )

Kaiho (*)

Tamakasuga

Chiyotenzan (*)

Wakanoyama (***)

Oginishiki (**)

Hayateumi's children came as a package when he found a woman who has 4 children and I guess has married her too. So Hayateumi doesn't have his own children yet I suppose

.... I guess some of you still recognize Hayate's wife's name Endo Ako. Yes she once was Mitoizumi's girlfriend as far as being engaged. But little later some facts about her ( like, that she had already had 3 [ yes, I guess it was 3.. not 4.. :-| ] children which Mito didn't know of, or that she was lying about her age by some 3 years... ) were revealed and eventually they broke up with each other.

So.... I assume there may be much of thorny issues around their marriage ( I know one serious Hayate's Tanimachi man who would fiercely oppose his marriage... and he was not the only one ), and that could possibly be a reason why the number of their children would differ depending on what you'd refer to.

Thank you, Amanogawa-zeki. Although it has nothing to do with their sumo, I do admit that I like to read about these "trivia".

Kotonowaka (*)

So it is only one after all. Cute kid, isn't he, and the same age as my youngest son.

Whoa..... Looks like she really wanted a rikishi ;-) I can imagine many people were opposed to this marriage.... I think the news must have made Mitoizumi feel bad.

But in a way, I like Hayate's guts, to marry her anyway despite all this opposition, and by doing so suddenly becoming a father of three. He must have strong feelings for this woman. I hope that Mitoizumi did get over her, and that she's not just taking advantage of Hayateumi.

By the way - what is Tanimachi?

Auugh! Poor Haya... I got a really bad impression of his current wife from Mitoizumi-era. Maybe she even cost him (Mito) the title of Takasago-oyakata...

Hopefuly I'm wrong - I like Haya too much, so I wish him happiness in marriage since he had no luck in business/sumo B-)

Well, being a maegashira isn't too bad. I'd say relatively he hasn't been that unsuccessful in sumo.

Well... (un) fortunately not. (Sigh...) But I guess that is one reason why this "incident" has been lingering in my mind for so long -- that is, that her name is quite similar to mine. B-)

But it's coming to totally B-) (Sigh...)

The snippet came from me. I translated it from a newspaper. It's on my audiobanzuke page, which you probably haven't heard of..

try

Thanks. I will have a look.

Edit: been there now. Quite good I agree. Also I see there is some interesting stuff on your site. I can see I am going to be spending some time there!
