And another slightly belated recruitment news, this time for Kasugano-beya: Minoru Kitani 木谷稔 is a graduate of (I think) Matsunami Middle School in Noto-cho, Ishikawa prefecture and was picked up by Kasugano-oyakata in his hometown on February 20th for the trip to Tokyo. His parents and various other family members were there to see him off at Noto airport, along with Mr. Yamasaki, head of the local sumo association (who might be this guy, though the first name doesn't match) who expressed his support for the youngster.

For his part, Kasugano-oyakata stated that he "wants to form him (into a rikishi) from the ground up", though it would appear that at least one lesson (namely what to say as a promising rikishi) will not be necessary: showing determination, Kitani proclaimed, "I would like to gambarize, all the way to yokozuna!"

Another Haru recruit for Nishikido-beya: it's junior high graduate Ryo? Honda 本多諒, announced on the heya blog about two weeks ago with a remarkably uninformative picture.

Incidentally, nothing new about their supposed other recruit Uchida since the original announcement back in December on the Mitoizumi blog...I suppose it's always possible with such early announcements that something came up to prevent their joining ozumo.

Edit (thanks to ja.wiki and other places): Honda was the national 6th-grade wampaku champion in 2005 and also won the All-Japan elementary 5th-grade competition in 2004.

Tokitsukaze-beya will be having its first new recruit since the Tokitaizan incident a year and a half ago. Masaru? Takahashi 高橋賢, a third-year student at Miyagi Agricultural High.

First inspection today. When asked of his aspirations, he said he wanted to be worthy of inheriting the "Tokitsuumi" shikona eventually. At first, after his sumo club adviser recommended "that Tokitsukaze stable" he was apprehensive, but after meeting the Oyakata he decided to join the heya. "We've had all sorts of recruits, but it seems we have a very enthusiastic one here.. I hope he keeps it up", said Tokitsukaze Oyakata.

One of the new recruits is Makuuchi gyoji Kimura Waichirou's eldest son Rintarou (15) who will be joining Takadagawa beya.

And twins again: Kataonami-beya has recruited middle school grads Akira 田村彰 and Akihiro Tamura 田村彰宏, from (I think) Okazaki-shi in Aichi prefecture. Unlike the Taka twins from last basho these two aren't quite identical in size...older brother Akira clocked in at 176 cm / 119 kg at today's examinations, while younger Akihiro was measured at 174 cm / 115 kg. They both prefer straight-up oshi-zumo and that's not the only thing they have in common; asked about their aspirations both immediately exclaimed, "Yokozuna brothers!"

Go Go Power Rangers:

Incidentally, the very nice homepage of Okazaki's sumo organization has local tournament results - Akira beat Akihiro twice in tourney finals this past year. Let's see if they get to repeat that in a playoff sometime soon. You can also see another pic of them here (second and third among the boys).

And after four months also another article about Tatsunami-beya recruit Shibata who did indeed join the stable in February. Not a whole lot of additional details over that old Yomiuri article (this one's from Sponichi), but it looks like he's grown a bit: now 176 cm / 108 kg, and he's turned 15 in the meantime. And now he prefers migi-yotsu, not oshi...umm, get yer story straight, will ya. :-) He's twice represented Hokkaido in the national middle school championships in his age group, and he'll be the first new rikishi from embattled city Yubari since Kitajishi in 1987. The shikona has already been decided on, and the newly-christened 北洋山 (Hokuyozan?) proclaimed that he'd "like to cheer up the people of Yubari by giving them something positive to talk about".

Flag gone already:

1.73/77 kilos, narrowly made the "normal" tier. "Since I was a kid, all I had was sumo", he explained. Associates are saying it is "perhaps" the first time ever a gyoji's son enters sumo. AFAIK, there is no rule about a gyoji judging his son's bouts. "I have never even dreamed about that.. The important thing is moving on", he answered when asked about that possibility.

Unless Rintarou breaks all the records for speedy promotion it is unlikely in the extreme that Waiichiro will referee his son's bouts.

Why Ichiro is only 49, so is it really that unlikely? Isn't the retirement age 65?

Sure. It is remotely possible but I'm looking at likelihood not remote possibility. Waichiro (sorry about the miss-spelling, I still think of him as the 16-year-old Hideki I first knew back in Kuramae days) will arrive at sanyaku-kau long before the son is sekitori, assuming he gets that far.

Well, he still can amble along to fight a sanyaku in about 15 years from now which wouldn't exactly equal breaking speed records as you said in the first post...

Likelihood now? You said "unless (he) breaks all records for speedy promotion" (In a state of confusion...) Odd to write this lad off before he has even begun. Hakuho started with a 3-4 in jonokuchi IIRC. Not exactly a stellar beginning.

And one more (from a week ago actually, I just forgot about it) - Chiganoura-beya has recruited 15-year-old Daishi Teratani (or Teraya) 寺谷大志 from Sayo Middle School in Sayo-cho, Hyogo prefecture. He's 174 cm / 115 kg and will be competing as Masukoma 舛耕磨. A large kid all his life, Teratani had attracted the attention of Chiganoura koenkai members from the town a while ago already, and he was sent off to his new life on March 3rd with an encouragement party attended by family, the shisho and about 50 town citizens. "I struggled with whether or not to go to high school, but I felt strong enough mentally and physically, so I decided to go for ozumo", the youngster commented. "I'd like to form him into an upstanding member of society", Chiganoura-oyakata added.

Tatsunami-beya's Kazuhiro Shibata taking part in a keiko session with his old club yesterday, as he's back home briefly for his middle school graduation ceremony. He's looking forward to his first mae-zumo bout in a few days: "It's the first step in my dream of becoming yokozuna. A win is a must!"

As Katayama, a Senshu U. grad leaves ozumo, another Senshu product takes his place.

It has been reported that Giichi Arikawa (有川義一) has dropped out of college and will be taking the secondary shin-deshi test for Haru Basho.

And same for Asai at Irumagawa-beya, it seems...he's name-checked a couple of times on Senshu's website in sumo results from 2007.

Dewanoumi's recruit Nakano also appears to have a Senshu connection - I've found some information that he was a member of the Senshu University Hokkaido Junior College sumo club back in 2006/07, though I'm not sure if he went on to Senshu University proper after finishing the juco or has done something else in the intervening years.

Hi! I have pictures but as usual we are just getting back & trying to download!

We were screwed in Maezumo today my friend Hamazaki-san confirmed we could watch it, even got someone's name they promised we would be able to enter before it. But when we got there lined up at 7am we were allowed in it was 825 and we dashed in quick for the 830 start they promised us as regular bouts started at 845 but they were nearly finished already!

Damn Kyokai! (Neener, neener...) (Shaking head...)

We try again tomorrow!!!!!

Oh & amazingly they said the names so fast & unclear that even my Japanese friends had a hard time knowing who was who!

Well try again!

They're going with the usual Osaka split-schedule maezumo again this year, despite having only a bit more than half the usual number of applicants. The first 20 were active today on Day 2, including the Tamura twins. Older brother Akira (now 玉東陵 Tamatoryo?) had an unexpected loss after being in control of the bout, while younger brother Akihiro (now 玉西陵 Tamaseiryo?) managed to score a win.

Nice idea. Unfortunately, there already is a Rikishi fighting under that name (Naruto heya), so he'll probably get a new Shikona or we'll see one of these prefix/suffix adjunctions. Maybe something like this (???): 大山本 (Oyamamoto)

Not big deal, at one point there were two Mori's compeating at the same time. But also Motoyamamoto can be a good friend for Yamamotoyama ;-)

True, but they used different kanji. There won't be two 山本 on the banzuke for sure. ;-)
