Wakanoho and the wall, Part 5

Recommended Posts

Well, anything can happen. Im just hoping for the best. Hokutoiwa has been on a mini-roll of late, winning 4 of his last 5.

I do not believe it. THREE STRAIGHT juryo matches to close the tournament. Im going to watch the makushita ranks more to see how often something like this happens.

I don't understand it, too. Why do they have him face a guy who is fighting for the same banzuke area he is fighting for? He already had two Juryo bouts, so it would now be time for a Jonidan rikishi to even it out. My first pick would have been Hokutonada, but at 2-4 he is about as positive in his score as Hokutoiwa is so Masuamami sounds like the better choice. But the fact that they did not pick him is a proof that the NSK is racist and wants to keep Wakanoho out of the Sekitori ranks. If he makes it to Juryo he will probably face Asashoryu on all 15 days! (Whistling...) get real...

If only he had lost his bout against Goeido, then he wouldn't have to deal with yet another Juryo opponent for Day 14...

Why did that matter?

Assuming you are actually serious with that question...

The torikumi makers tend to match up Makushita rikishi on the verge of promotion with Juryo rikishi fighting to hold their place in the division, hence the fact that 3-3 Wakanoho and 3-3 Shiraishi are fighting Tamaasuka and Hokutoiwa, both of whom are in danger of dropping from Juryo. These type of bouts are generally refered to as exchange bouts.

If Wakanoho had lost to Goeido, he would be 2-4 with no promotion hopes whatsoever. Thus it would be far less likely for the torikumi makers to match him with another Juryo opponent as there just wouldn't be any reason for it. But he won and put himself in position for promotion, thus another bout against a Juryo rikishi came his way.

Well, wouldnt situations like this happen all the time? Why havent i seen many others with 3 in a row juryo matches lately?

Whatever the case, i hope he pulls it off. I expect the wall to either be fully heatted today, or next basho, in juryo which is fine for me because if he gets into juryo next basho he will have 15 of his most difficult bouts ever, with the possibilities of going against some makuuchi mainstays due to tall the demotions, and it will be great learning experience for him.

Don't you think that is overstating things ever so slightly?

Well, he has had how many bouts? 60-70. How many of those have been against solid juryo guys? Im sure hes had about 5-10 bouts with guys who were almost at juryo level when going against them like his recent kageyama bout, recent hakuba bout, but even if he had 10 bouts theoretically at this level (theoretically since still they would have taken place in makushita), id say more than doubling that total is quite significant.

Especially so since he will be in one of the deeper juryos in my recent memory (if everyone comes back healthy), with the current guys like goeido, tochiozan, wakanosato, and other juryo mainstays like shunketsu, satoyama. And then you have all of these demotions due to injury such as hokutoriki, hakurozan, and more strong guys like kitazakura, etc.

Almost all of his bouts will be against strong opponents, IMO. I think this is where we will start to see improvement from him as far as technique goes.

If he wins his next two, I'd say Hakurozan will pull off a miracle and stay in Makuuchi.

true. I think if he wins he does stay. But not sure if two oseetians in one tournament can win everything when loosing even one more means demotions. :-(

Wakanohou is just one win away from becoming the youngest foreign rikishi to make it to Juryo. The record is held by Hakuhou who made it at 21 and 8 months.

Just to fix an error-Hakuhou's record is 18 and 9 months-the original article had it wrong. But no matter, it's a record anyway- 18 and 5 months.

I wonder how this is calculated... Wakanoho will be 18y5m in December, so as far I am concerned, he's still 18y4m. But maybe that's just me since it seems that's the way Japanese media is doing it.

Wakanoho has gained a lot of attention and fans and appeared to be the most popular makushita rikishi. At least he got a lot of applause during his dohyo time. He secured his promotion by lifting Hokutoiwa's center of gravity at the tachi-ai and once Hokutoiwa started to go forward, Wakanoho slapped him down with hatakikomi "I was able to go with all I got at the tachi-ai" Wakanoho said. Back at the shitaku-beya he was embraced and congratulated by Hakurozan. "I wanted to get up the banzuke fast. Want to become the kind of yokozuna my oyakata was!" he said with a Russian smile, manly sweat decorating his skin.

Banzuke publication decides. For example demoted ozekis become sekiwakes only after the publication of the next banzuke. Edited by Kotoseiya Yuichi

FWIW, the Kyokai uses the banzuke release date. Hakuho was listed as 18y 9m 13d old in the 2004.01 banzuke topics.

Edit: Hmm, beaten to the punch by Kotoseiya.

Will having a sekitori now help recruitment at all? This heya really needs to get some more guys. If the website information is correct they will have 1 juryo, 3 makushita, 5 jonidan and 1 jonokuchi. When is the last time they even had a recruit? Was it wakanoho?

There latest recruit is the one not in your list - Yasumiya who entered 2005.07 and just now had his mae-zumo... Also Shunba still can get to sandanme with a win tomorrow. Before Yasumiya the last entrants were Wakanoho and Nara in 2005.03.

I think as much as Magaki may need a new recruit, they will need an okamisan or someone to take over the role.

The oyakata appears he still has not gotten over the loss of his second wife, Yuko who passed away some months ago.

He retired around 30 years old and was still looking he could continue as he had a career 11 wins 11 losses record against yokozuna Kitanoumi but due to a widely reported scandal but not many from the Kyokai tried to make him stay at the time. Many thought of it as a good riddance.

While married to his shisho's daughter, Magaki oyakata had a physical relationship with an older "hostess" and subsequently he divorced his first wife to marry her. He had put the affair of his heart ahead of the Kyokai and that obviously did not go well with the establishment at the Kyokai then.

Yokozuna Wakanohana II has been always my all time favorite rikishi.
