Not just 2 Ukrainians now to represent Europe, Baruto sent a new Estonian. News for Kyushu, but he has started the 6+ months kenshu period in Hidenoyama-beya in mid August - so Haru or Natsu for his shindeshi kensa debut, maybe together with Estonian descent Nicolas. 18 year old Anatoli Zadoroznõi (180cm, 124kg), wrestling and judo background and he started with sumo at age 12, was at the junior world championships (several videos of him on YT for greco-roman wrestling)

I am wondering if all the material on Battsetseg Ochirsaikhan should be moved over here. I am having problems accessing some forum pages but I think he is starting in November.

He already made his shindeshi kensa appearance in September, we've never reposted stuff to the next thread just because of the mandatory one-basho waiting period between kensa and maezumo.

I do wish I had pushed more forcefully for a separate "foreigners during kenshu" thread a couple of years ago, though...

From the Aki shindeshi-kensa, both Ochir and Oggie under their proper shikona will be in maezumo, but the names haven't been reported in the news yet.

Nakamura(Yoshikaze) was home in Saiki at Saiki Honan high school to get 2 3rd years as new recruits, from the sumo club Ryuto Takeda 武田琉斗 (170cm, 150kg) and Atsuto Ogata 緒方惇斗, Takeda as rikishi, Ogata as tokoyama. Takeda made it to a Kyushu tournament, he wants aim for sekiktori as an oshi specialist. The 2 will join the Kyushu training camp of the heya in Saga pref. tomorrow. Takeda is reported as the first new recruit for Yoshikaze's heya (surprising, but so far all had joined Nishonoseki first) - he's the first from the school to enter ozumo. Ogata wants to do the mage of Takeda in the future. Ogata was already on the NSK site for a while - Tokowaka from now on

With a bit more on the 2, Takeda here 170cm, 152kg, he started with sumo in 5th grade. Ogata wants not only to do the hair, but all kind of support for the rikishi.

Now at last an article that noticed Tokowaka and reported that he became an NSK member on Oct. 1st. A pity that they don't post his stats. He started with sumo as 4th grade, had an experience stay in the heya last winter and was fascinated by the work of the tokoyama. He was tokoyama apprentice for 5 months since May.

Takeda's direct connection is a participation in the local Yoshikaze-cup, in summer he had his first experience stay at the heya, was instructed by his admired oyakata and decided to join.

Yoshikaze is of course happy that his first ever Nakamura-beya shindeshi is from his hometown.

3 rikishi have applied for the Kyushu shindeshi-kensa which will be taking place on Tuesday the 4th. Sanspo reports that one of them is last year's student champion and All-Japan runner-up, Mongolian Tuvaadorj Bukhchuluun トワードルジ ブフチョローン whose entry to Kasugano-beya and future start in makushita were originally announced some seven months back at the start of his apprenticeship period:

Usually the maskushita tsukedashi are acknowledged right before the shindeshi-kensa, but the later articles make it look like he'll start his trainee period now, so he will be at the Kyushu shindeshi kensa  http://www.sanspo.com/article/20250327-X56EDOLCN5NINO2DKRY7KY645M/

Edit: It was pointed out to me that I neglected to mention Bukhchuluun's collegiate background - he's a Nippon Sports Science graduate. Presumably his MsTd start will be in January as per the usual one-basho waiting period, although I'm kind of wondering if the early acknowledgement of his tsukedashi status may have made a difference to his visa acquisition process. Probably not.

The other two applicants are the aforementioned Ryuto Takeda (18) for Nakamura-beya, and Hiromasa Seki 関 大将 (18) for Sakaigawa-beya. Seki hails from Sasaguri-machi in Fukuoka, so a hometown boy for the Kyushu tournament.

Incidentally, after we had an unexpectedly young Otgonbat/Tenshoyama in last basho's kensa, I see that Bukhchuluun is already 24 now and so must have been 23 as a senior-year university student at the end of last year, one year older than usual. Again I wonder how that has come about.

Takeda was 14 minutes late for the examinations. However, thanks to the kindness of the three Oyakata present at the examination—head of the shinpan department and director, Takadagawa Oyakata , vice director, Fujishima Oyakata, and Kumegawa Oyakata—they waited for his arrival, and all three new recruits met the minimum physical requirements of at least 167 cm in height and 67 kg in weight. At 1:14 PM, Takeda, with his plump frame at 170 cm and 158 kg, jogged to the examination venue. His voice trembled as he apologized, seeing the three senior shinpan, some of the most intimidating faces among the Oyakata. Even so, Fujishima Oyakata gently told him, "There's no need to panic. Your blood pressure will rise too." In fact, Takeda had been told that the examination would begin at 2:00 p.m.

 In the sumo world, there's an unspoken rule known as "sumo time," symbolizing a hierarchical society. In an effort to arrive on time before their seniors, there's a tendency to arrive earlier than scheduled, resulting in everything starting earlier than scheduled. In fact, it's customary for the shindeshi kensa newbies' examinations to begin once all the Oyakata present have arrived. While the "1:00 PM" start hour is official, it's not uncommon for the start to be more than 30 minutes earlier. However, a delay in the start of an examination due to a new entrant's lateness is almost unheard of. When Takeda hadn't shown up by 12:20 PM, a Sumo Association official called Nakamura beya. Takeda was still eating at his heya's lodgings in Saga Prefecture. He rushed over from there. "I'm naturally a very nervous person, but this made me even more nervous," Takeda recalled. Until the early Heisei period, when there were a lot of new entrants, he might have been disqualified and would have had to retake the exam the following tournament. However, it could also be seen as a lenient measure, especially as heya are currently struggling to recruit new recruits. Takeda, a native of Saiki City, Oita, is currently attending Oita Toyonan High School, and took the test this tournament at the request of his Oyakata, former sekiwake Yoshikaze, who is from the same hometown, and his own desire to make his debut at the Kyushu basho. Takeda said, "I'm really glad I wasn't disqualified. My ideal is Nakamura. I admire him being able to fight even though he was small," and finished with a smile of relief. Pending the results of the internal organs examination, the successful candidates will be announced on the first day of the Kyushu tournament.

I always assumed there was a rule which required shikona to be in the Japanese language. Have I just imagined this? If not, when does this kick in? Can you compete in maezumo with a Mongolian-language shikona?

No, but maezumo starts on  day 3 of the Kyushu basho - still one week to go, in which he(/the heya) won't need (to tell) his shikona

Buckchuluun's name consists of Buck for Bökh, Mongolian sumo, and chuluun for an unbreakable stone. He had originally aimed to become an Olympic wrestler and like Hoshoryu came to Nittaidai Kashiwa high as a wrestling exchange student. Soon after his arrival, his father died in a car accident and he had wanted him to go into ozumo. To fulfil this wish, he switched to sumo when he entered university. In high school he won several national titles in freestyle wrestling, as 2nd year the interhigh and kokuspo juniors in the 92kg class, in 3rd year a national select tournament.
