He'll drop to Makushita on the next banzuke, stating that he won't retire after this basho, and will make a decision on his future depending on how the surgery goes. Jonidan gyoji Kimura Ryunosuke seemed to be struggling with a sore throat today and ended his shift a little early, Kimura Keitaro stepped up to give the kachinanori for his penultimate bout and then officiated what would have been Ryunosuke's last one. Ryunosuke is kyujo from tomorrow. Edited September 14 by Yubinhaad 1
Vancouver BC Sumo Fan 69 Posted September 14 Does anyone know what happened to Matsugashima? He hit his head really hard and looked unconscious for a bit. He was taken out on a stretcher (Takakeisho helped pick him up) in a neck brace.
Yubinhaad 11,986 Posted September 15 Three Jonidan rikishi withdraw from the basho ahead of Day 3: Jd42e Matsugashima - I haven't seen the bout where he was injured but I've read that later on the broadcast it was mentioned he was conscious and talking. Jd78w Chiyoryusei - looked like a dislocated shoulder the way he was favouring his arm after his Day 1 bout. Poor guy seems to be made of glass. Koorifuu 1,121 Posted September 15 Pleasanty surprised that Kazuto hasn't made the list, after showing some clear signs of discomfort - struggled to move his arm.

Yubinhaad 11,986 Posted September 17 Mostly mentioned already, half a dozen rikishi have withdrawn from the lower divisions ahead of Day 5: Ms14e Gyotoku (fusenpai Day 4) - I've read that he was unwell before the basho so probably isn't feeling fit enough to continue. Ms39w Tochiseiryu - seems to be a right knee injury, he was taken away in the wheelchair. A Makushita constant for about eight years. Ms53w Fukai (fusenpai Day 3) Sd17e Yurikisho Sd77w Oatari (fusenpai Day 3) - really sad, this was his Sandanme debut after 10 years as a rikishi. Jk25w Higohikari Ms25e Tokitenran and Jd22e Chiyotenfu both had fusenpai on Day 3, but haven't withdrawn from the basho at this stage. 1

Yeah, I've commented something along those lines a few times as well. That bad injury ruined him, just as he had taken a makushita yusho and was looking good in the joi. Limping every bout for multiple basho is not a great sign. Of course he never looked anywhere near the same. Edited September 17 by Koorifuu
Kintamayama 47,413 Posted September 18 Makushita Narutaki fell off the dohyo and seemed to be seriously injured in his loss to Matsui.. Everyone was running around for a good ten minutes trying to get him up and out. First the mammoth wheelchair, then the stretcher. Finally they got him on the stretcher. Don't know what the injury was exactly but it looked bad. I don't remember ever seeing it take so long to get an injured rikishi out of the venue.
Shikona 171 Posted September 18 I don't think he hit his head, so no worries there. It looked like his left leg buckled as he was falling, so my guess would be something pulled or torn in the knee or hip. He looked to be in a lot of pain, which may explain why it took so long and why they put him on a stretcher instead of making him stand up to get in the chair. RussReimroc 31 Posted September 19 Kyujo updates for Day 7 Ms11 Narutaki withdraws(no surprise to anyone here I'm sure) On the flip side... Jk8 Sadanojo will be entering the basho(previously kyujo from Day 1)

Yubinhaad 11,986 Posted September 19 Narutaki suffered a left ankle injury, according to the press. Matsugashima suffered a concussion in his fall from the dohyo and will take the rest of the basho off as a precaution, however he was able to celebrate his 23rd birthday today.
Kintamayama 47,413 Posted September 20 (edited) Hakuouhou defeated Kirishima today but a very worrying incident occurred after the match. Hakuouhou was 3-3 and Kirishima was 4-2. Hakuouhou started this bout with a strong tachiai and a morozashi but Kirishima grabbed both of his arms and threw him around. Still, he continued to apply pressure with his feet, at some point Kirishima lost his patience and went for a pull, but was finally pushed out of the dohyo. Despite his impressive performance and the win, Hakuouhou showed signs of concern about his right arm immediately after the bout. After being declared the winner and leaving the dohyo, he looked at his right arm, which was unnaturally swollen around his biceps. According to a post-match statement on NHK's broadcast, Hakuouhou stated that he "thought it was torn." While there was no indication of a kyujo as of the end of Day 7, it appears he may have suffered a serious injury that could lead to an immediate withdrawal from the tournament on Day 8. Hakuouhou, now 22, is one of the rising stars of the sport, having achieved the fastest promotion to Juryo in just one tournament and the fastest promotion to Makuuchi in three tournaments. However, his career has been plagued by frequent injuries, and he missed the entire Aki and Kyushu bashos last year due to surgery on an old left shoulder injury. During the 2024 Natsu Basho, he tore his right biceps. However, he has continued to compete to this day without taking a break or undergoing surgery for his right arm injury. While the pain worsened during the 2025 Natsu basho he competed in some matches with taping. It's possible that his continued push to compete may have contributed to the current accident. Takerufuji, who belongs to the same Isegahama beya continued competing despite injuring his right arm on the sixth day of the Nagoya tournament. However, his condition worsened, and onday 13, he submitted a medical certificate stating that he had a "ruptured right biceps tendon and required two months of rest and treatment," and withdrew from the tournament. He underwent surgery in August after the tournament, but was unable to compete in the ongoing basho, and a fall to Juryo is inevitable for Kyushu. The nature and details of Hakuouhou's injury are still unknown, but it's conceivable that he may be forced to miss not only this basho but also the entire Kyushu basho. Regarding day 8 and beyond, the majority of fans are of the opinion that he should not push himself too hard and should withdraw, but attention will likely be focused on what decision he and his Oyakata Isegahama will make. The Sporting News Ex-Wakanohana on Abema's sumo broadcast: ""It only took an instant for his right arm to be locked in in a kime hold. But it must have hurt. If he'd been shaken around some more, his arm would have broken. Not wanting to be outdone, (Hakuouhou) kept thrusting." Hanada continued, "Oh, did you get that?" and added, "His little finger...it really hurts. The pinky. That's why it's cramping when he moves it. It's scary...I'm worried about what will happen from tomorrow," showing concern for Hakuouhou's condition regarding tomorrow. Afterwards, Hakuouhou waited to give the chikaramizu to the next rikishi on the dohyo but even while holding the ladle, he had a look of agony on his face. After completing his role, he lowered his gaze to his right elbow and walked down the hanamichi, but a surprised voice was heard from the broadcast booth, saying, "Doesn't something seem strange about his forearm? It looks a bit swollen!" Edited September 20 by Kintamayama 1

Yubinhaad 11,986 Posted September 21 I don't think I've heard of a rikishi leaving on a stretcher and returning to the basho a few days later, but here we are! One rikishi is back in action, but three others have to withdraw ahead of Day 9. Returning: Ms11w Narutaki (withdrew Day 7) Withdrawing: Ms43w Naya Jd22e Chiyotenfu - had a fusenpai back on Day 3 but didn't withdraw, two more losses since then and now kyujo. Jd28w Tamatensho (fusenpai Day 8) Sd12e Kotetsu had a fusenpai on Day 7 but hasn't withdrawn from the basho at this point. Oh, and Jonidan gyoji Kimura Ryunosuke returned to duty on Day 7.

Yubinhaad 11,986 Posted September 23 Two rikishi withdraw from the lower divisions ahead of Day 11: Sd5e Kinotsukasa (fusenpai Day 10) - a sprained right ankle in his last bout, he heard something pop at the end and hobbled away, he can walk but not able to do sumo yet, according to Ikazuchi-oyakata (former Komusubi Kakizoe). Sd12e Kotetsu - had a fusenpai on Day 7, lost his next bout on Day 10 and is now kyujo.
