Top 10 Sumo Records July 2020

Recommended Posts

While we are still in the midst of the Covid pandemic, sumo managed to provide us with a very entertaining and suspenseful basho all the way up to the end! It looks like you need to trim some retired wrestlers from this list (Italicised)

This is really cool to me as a fairly new fan. Before this year, the last M17 to win was in 1939. Now, we've already had two in the first half of the year! I wonder if we'll ever see an M17 winner  beat a Yokozuna on the way to victory?

As a sumo fan since 1987, I also appreciate Wakatake's post-basho stats. I also appreciate your point about M17 yusho winners, but July & August fall in the second half of the Julian/Gregorian calendar...

Never say never and all that. A beast like Terunofuji coming back from injury (i.e. former ozeki and previous yusho winner) could probably beat a yokozuna - if there was one to beat. But most M17s are not Terunofuji. We saw nerves completely undo Kiribayama when he faced Hakuho. Imagine what it would be like for an inexperienced makujiri having to face a yokozuna for the first time, with a yusho at stake.

so phrase it "2 in the first 3 basho of the year" - for any usual year that would be the same

Considering there's only ever been 1 before, I believe 2 in a year is sufficiently extraordinary.
