Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 14, 2019 (edited) The Jungyo is is Hitachinomiya, Ibaraki prefecture today. Takakeisho didn't do sumo, only basic training again to sweat a bit and to continue to forge his body. As it was reported he did start proper Keiko yesterday with Hokutofuji but this morning he only did push ups and other similar exercises. "I want to do more fundamental training in order to be in good shape. I mostly did basic training but I think it's good" he summed the 22 years old. He also stressed out that he is not fixated on doing actual Keiko. "There's one month left" he said calmly. https://www.nikkansports.com/m/battle/sumo/news/201904140000803_m.html?mode=all Edited April 14, 2019 by Rainoyama 1
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 14, 2019 Ibaraki is the home prefecture of former Yokozuna Kisenosato (32) who retired in January. He was invited on the tour and mounted the dohyo to salute his home crowd. As he was walking through the hana michi to get to the dohyo the fans were scanding his name or prasing him "You look good in a suit !" etc "Thank you so much for your support during 17 years. I want to thank specially the people of Ibaraki who supported it me so much that it became a real strength for me. Thanks to that I had the honour to be promoted to Yokozuna. From now on, I'll do my best to guide and instruct the next generation and I'll do my best to raise Yokozuna and Ozeki that everybody can love" he said as he was presented with flowers. The crowd applauded him loudly for a while. After that he had a moment with the fans and gave out autographs and handshakes. On standing on the dohyo in a suit " It's really precious, I'm really grateful to have been invited to the Jungyo". Retired Yokozuna performed dohyo If during Jungyo in the past but it's not really a thing anymore " It's a bit dissapointing that I cannot do a dohyo iri. I wanted to but of course it's already been a basho since I retired. Mounting on the dohyo for the first time in a while felt really great !" He is scheduled to performed a dohyo iri at the kokugikan on september 9 for his retirement "It'll truly be the final time I perfom it" he said calmly. Finally on not being active as the new Reiwa era is starting "I'm retired now and I feel good ans refreshed. New era, new sekitori. I leave the future to them" https://www.nikkansports.com/m/battle/sumo/news/201904140000802_m.html?mode=all 2

Akōgyokuseki 229 Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) On 06/04/2019 at 22:52, Kintamayama said: Takayasu will be joining the jungyo on March 15th. He was kyujo due to back pains. "My back is mostly better now and my body is getting into shape. I want to do sumo immediately after joining," he said. In the meantime he is getting into shape at the heya in Tokyo, training with the lower rankers. Well he's back and on the hunt for his first yusho. But before that, there was rehabilitation "I made an effort to care and train my body well" he says "it was a productive time, I'm raising my fighting spirit! At the jungyo I will do my best to complete it!". Takayasu is all fired up after watching shin Ozeki Takakeisho's rise up the banzuke and as always heid mind is on his first championship "My wish if for my first yusho, I think I have the confidence to finally grasp it" he said. https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/04/15/0012244357.shtml?pg=2 Edited April 15, 2019 by Akōgyokuseki never use a smartphone for posting material like this. 1
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 15, 2019 (edited) The Jungyo is at the very controversial Yasukuni Shrine today (Chiyoda ward Tokyo). Even Dai-Yokozuna Hakuhou is motivated by Tiger woods dramatic come back. 43 years old Tiger Woods recently won his first major title in 11 years (!) "As you can expect, I was thrilled ! It wasn't words, he just made a statement with his play" commented a wowed Hakuho. Hakuho apparently likes golf a lot and followed Woods' results this tournament very carefuly. Woods 43 overcame frequent and repeated injuries to manage this incredible come back. "We're not the same age (Hakuho is 34) at all but we both overcame injuries and we are both very hungry to win" declared Hakuho. (優勝は)のどから手が出るほど欲しかったのでは this is what he said in Japanese for those interested which is quite powerful to describe just how powerful Hakuho's drive to win is. Hakuho performed a "dezuiri" in the shrine for the first time in for the first time in 4 years. (Apparently Dezuiri is an old term to say dohyo iri but they seem to be different as he apparently performed a regular dohyo iri as well. Does anyone know the difference ?) https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201904150000520.html Edited April 15, 2019 by Rainoyama 2
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 15, 2019 Just like Hakuho, Kakuryu performed Dezu iri (手数入り) twice as well as his unryu style dohyo iri. He performed the the Dezu iri in front of the hall of worship then the regalar dohyo iri 15 minutes later. "Two performances in one day, it's a first for me. Especially in such a short time. No wonder why he looked tired " commented Shodai who was Kakuryu's tsuyuarai as usual. "It's the first time I perform a dezu iri at the Yasukuni shrine, it was a nice experience to do it to celebrate the 150th year since the creation of the shrine" said Kakuryu. Kakuryu was impressed by Tiger Woods' come back as well. "That was amazing wasn't it ? I was just an ordinary fan watching him" he explained with excitement. Kakuryu himself had quite a nice come back last year and won two yusho back to back (Haru and Natsu) just when people where starting to ask themselves if he was done. "I won a yusho when people were thinking that I wouldn't win anymore, the atmosphere around Woods' come back is similar to what I experienced. After watching this of course I want to do my best too !" https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201904150000691.html 2

Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) As mentioned just above the Jungyo was in Ota ward Tokyo today. While all eyes were on Hakuho, it was also fan's favourite Chiyomaru's 28th birthday. Chiyomaru was very happy to get a cake but things escalated quickly as Hokutofuji splashed the cake directly on his face. "I don't know what flavour is the cake" said Chiyomaru the face covered with cream and with a bitter laugh. "Chiyomaru tan" as he is nicknamed by his numerous fans got 10 wins while ranked J1W last basho and will be back in the top division next basho. "I'll be back in Makuuchi next basho, my objective is to climb up even if it's just one rank, I want to do my best to go has high as jo-i this year" he declared. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201904170000834.html Before and after, Chiyomaru tan and the birthday cake, a tragedy two parts. Kintamayama 47,359 Posted April 18, 2019 (edited) So Takayasu and Ichinojou are back to training in full swing. Takayasu faced Tochiouzan (5-4). "I'm still way behind in training. I still can't train for a long time, but I'm concentrating on the fundamentals and working on my lower body .I will be training while avoiding injury, and intend to return to my roots and achieve what I have initially set out to do" he said. As for Ichinojou, he was asked if he had the yusho in mind last basho. "Yes, I thought about it. I had a lot of bouts where i retreated and slapped down my opponents. I'd like to do more forward moving oshi and yori sumo," he said. He is assured a sanyaku return for Natsu. "I'm wondering how many bouts I can win and when I will get my kachikoshi next basho. Anyway, I'll give it my all," he added. Today, he faced some sekitori and was 3-4. "I was mostly checking to see if my pain is gone, and it is, so it's from here on, then.." he concluded Edited April 18, 2019 by Kintamayama 1

Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 19, 2019 The Jungyo is in Gyoda, Saitama prefecture today. Takayasu continued his training and offered guidance to young rikishi. After facing Tochiozan for 9 bouts yesterday, he faced Endo and Aoyama for a total 14 bouts today and finished 9-5. He lost all five bouts in a row against giant Aoyama who was excellent last basho. "It was good training, oppponents that with impact are the best" commented Takayasu. The Ozeki joined the Jungyo only a few days ago and plans to gradually increase the number of bouts. "I cannot do sumo for long yet, I'll continue to do proper fundamental training and concentrate if I can. I want to increase my stamina and fighting sense" he explained. Stamina has been highlighted as what he needs to improve most to be able to shift to the next gear for the second week of the basho. On giving advice to young Rikishi "I want them to become stronger and to become my partners for training. I've always had the desire to teach" he explained. https://www.nikkansports.com/m/battle/sumo/news/201904190000581_m.html 1

Kintamayama 47,359 Posted April 20, 2019 Endou just had his first keiko bouts this jungyo. No reason given for that, but some kind of injury for sure. "I decided to go for it during the dohyo iri today," he said. He faced Takarafuji and Ryuuden for 7 bouts going 4-3. Then he was called out by Takayasu for an additional 4 bouts, losing them all. "I will be mounting the dohyo from here on whilst consulting with my body," he summed. 1
Kintamayama 47,359 Posted April 20, 2019 (edited) Or maybe some of them just decide to start doing sumo during keiko later than others. First Haru jungyo sumo during keiko for Goueidou and Kakuryuu today as well. After the under-sanyaku boys wrapped up their keiko, Goueidou mounted the dohyo, facing Shoudai and Nishikigi for 11 bouts, winning them all, going for the front of the mawashi maemitsu attack a lot. Immediately after that, Kakuryuu mounted the dohyo, facing Shoudai for 7 bouts, winning them all, mostly checking out his moves. "Tachiai-that's the important thing. The rest is how my body responds and moves. I'm totally OK. I was planning on starting seriously during the second half of the jungyo anyway so I was building my body towards that. It was totally OK ," he said later. "It's been a while since I did sumo so I was checking out how my legs are moving.. It's not perfect yet, but it wasn't that bad. I will do serious keiko and will up the pace from here on. It's going to be a basho people will take notice of (new era, etc.), so I think I will be aiming for the yusho," said Goueidou. Kintamayama 47,359 Posted April 20, 2019 (edited) Busy day at the jungyo today, it seems. Takakeishou had promised Tochinoshin they would train together. Takayasu decided to join. Three way session. Takakeishou 5-8, second time doing sumo after a week. Strong sumo at first, tired out in the end and out of breath. He hadn't done much sumo till now, concentrating on the fundamentals. "It was good keiko. The feeling as I hit my opponents cause my power to surge. It was much better than a week ago. I have to take my body one step further and it will get even better. It's not often that we (the Ozekis, you know what I mean..) can train together," he said, seeming happy with his performance. Tochinoshin was 7-5, beaten easily once by Takakeishou's pushes, 4-2 against him in all. "I want to be able to do my own sumo against opponents I am having difficulties with.. " he stated. Takayasu was 7-6. His lower body is still lacking balance and he was seen pulling a lot. "The content was not good. I want to do better keiko. My stamina is OK and so is my physical power. I could have done more, but the content.." he said. New Ozeki-old Ozeki: Edited April 20, 2019 by Kintamayama 2

Rainoyama 1,157 Posted April 22, 2019 The tour is Sano, Tochigi prefecture today, as often lately no real big news to report. Local boys are the twins Takagenji and Takanofuji (21). Both were raised in Ibaraki but they're born in Tochigi which is also where their father's home town is. "It's the first time I come here since I entered sumo, the countryside is great isn't it ?" explained Takagenji who enjoyed "Sano Ramen" the local specialty. "I remember eating it a very long time ago, it was nostalgic. The flavour is wonderful" he commented. "I'm glad that our teacher from nursery school came to see us" said first born of the twins Takanofuji. Takagenji finished last basho 8-7 while ranked J4E and is as close as ever to his makuuchi's debut. In fact he may be selected from promotion if he is lucky enough given how many the demotable rikishi are. His brother on the other end finished 6-9 for his return to juryo after a year down climbing back after he was suspended for beating his tsukebito and is very likely to fall back down to Makushita once again. Newly promoted Ozeki Takakeisho is one school year older than the twins but entered sumo one year after them. "It's very vexing. He beat me to the spot and reached a prestigious rank beofore me" commented Takanofuji ( well Takakeisho didn't beat his tsukebito and didn't struggle to stay in Juryo...) While there is frustration of course, Takanofuji said there are a lot of things he can learn for his stablemate. " During good times as well as during bad times he his never feels down and always goes forward. He is only one year older yet the difference is so great. I want to follow his example and have the mental strength to get wins at important moments like he does" "I wonder what position we'll be in when we cut our mage" said Takagenji hinting that even if Takakeisho is well ahead for now the end of the race between stablemates is not over yet. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201904220000513.html 3
