Jyuunomori 226 Posted February 7, 2017 This guy, I swear... If Ura doesn't get injured I doubt he will ever drop out of Sekitori. He might also make a permanent recident in Makuuchi which is tremenous. Three double digit Juryo records, one bare KK and one losing record by an inch. I'd say he will be fine. gunner 10 Posted February 19, 2017 I believe he will have a short but exciting career. His sumo is effective because of his speed and flexibility. Top level body condition is hard to maintain look at him leaving the Doyo. This guy puts it all on the line except for the days he henkas. He is getting beat up pretty badly. Akaoni 1 Posted February 20, 2017 One also has to wonder whether his style of sumo will be effective against more fundamentally sound rikishi in makuuchi. Still, love watching his unorthodox sumo. Hope he's around for a while.
RabidJohn 1,858 Posted February 20, 2017 I've enjoyed watching Ura since he was brought to my attention as a rising star in makushita. He's a very entertaining rikishi. I would've expected him to remain on the fast and agile end of the spectrum, but no, he's packing on weight; 134kg last time and reportedly aiming for 145kg. He's aiming to be something quite different to what he was, and that's inevitably going to impact on the speed. If he can maintain his flexibility and sense of balance, though, he's still going to be an entertaining addition to makuuchi. However, (and apologies if this reference to a previous post means nothing to you) I think gravity might have to renege on their deal.
Katooshu 3,335 Posted February 21, 2017 His ability to stay on his feet in precarious spots is something else. Toyohibikii in particular must've been thinking that he had him.
Stelios 30 Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) Ura has three characteristics that could carry him a long way: - very strong legs - exceptional balance - technique that rivals Harumafuji's What he lacks is experience and I'm afraid we will see a short career because of injuries. Otherwise his potential is unlimited and not only to be a Makuuchi mainstay. Edited February 21, 2017 by Stelios
Benihana 1,937 Posted February 21, 2017 And what if he decides to change his fighting style and shows more straight forward sumo? There are so many variables in all this. Let's see what happens the next 2 or 3 basho.
orandashoho 720 Posted February 21, 2017 (edited) Well yes, when the body changes adjustments have to be made. Developing sumotori are constantly faced with the problem of finding a new equilibrium, they don't get much rest to get used to a platform where they can develop a style before it changes again. And again. Certain moves may well be unsuitable for the new body, carry too big a health risk, etc. But Ura has a few things in his favour : -- excellent ring sense -- all-or-nothing fighting spirit -- very strong lower body He is sure to have a long and prosperous career if he can avoid taking risks that "the new body" won't be able to handle as well as the "old body". d_golem 213 Posted February 21, 2017 Ura is the first rikishi I've followed in his entirety since his debut in Maezumo almost 2 years go. I joined this forum 2 months after that. It's been very....enlightening to see a young man changing And growing in a sport like ozumo, and makes you want to cheer for him and stay for the rest of their career.
