A kesho mawashi of the late Ushiomaru from his local Shizuoka koenkai, designed by himself, was donated to his hometown Shizuoka today by his widow: "I'll be extremely happy if he'd be remembered"

You can really see Ushiomaru's face when you look at his mother. If you'd showed me a picture of her and asked me whose mother she was, I might have got it.

Ushiomaru got the kesho mawashi for makuuchi promotion , with Mt. Fuji and tea plantations - typical Shizuoka motifs. The donation is meant to help encourage youths from Shizuoka to become rikishi, Ushiomaru/Azumazeki had the hope to raise a local rikishi.

The most expensive kesho mawashi ever was that of Wakashimazu, with an eagle holding a 10 carat diamond in its claw, and a 2 carat one as its eye - about 150 million yen 40 years ago

AS20230317001224.jpgo

DSEVUyhUIAAQA94.jpg:large

another expensive diamond decorated kesho mawashi was one for 70 million yen of an ozeki with 2 big diamonds for 30 million yen each in the eyes of a black panther (I haven't found a pic or any detail about that one), the kesho mawashi itself for about the top sum of 10 million yen, same value as those in the famous set of Hakuho

Hakuho will get a keshō-mawashi set from the Nishiarai-daishi temple, each at least 10 million Yen worth, with a design by Japanese painter Toshio Matsuo (87). The one for the yokozuna with the sun, for tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai with peony flowers like on the temple grounds.

Peonies are a specialty of the painter, for whom it is seen as the first keshō-mawashi design.

While looking for more info, I found another kesho mawashi of Kisenosato on display in Ibaraki pref, since July 1st at the Kawachi town Kawachi-mura tourist spot that sells local produce. This one he got from the Ibaraki local koenkai in the year he was promoted to makuuchi, he used it on day 1 of his first makuuchi basho. With a daruma and the kanbun phrase that is the origin of his shikona: 作稀勢 Saku-Kisei, transliterated mare naru ikoi wo nasu  稀なる勢いを作すcultivating extraordinary vigor. The shisho while active received that phrase from the Eihei-ji chief abbot Hata Egyoku 秦慧玉 and was determined to some day give the shikona Kisenosato to a deshi with the talent to make it to yokozuna. o

Nishonoseki in a talk-show on June 18th presented it to the public: when he received it his thoughts were both "at last it started" and "it's from now on" o

Asahi shimbun had a series on kesho mawashi - behind the paywall, so I haven't read most of them yet - it's tedious to read them line by line with the search function

A cheap kesho mawashi costs about 1.2-1.3 million yen to make

While searching for the expensive kesho mawashi of an ozeki, I found one at least expensive looking from Baruto, from Justin Davis jewelry, artist Fumio Inoue worked on it. Baruto used it when he got his yusho in 2012. Apparently he sold it when he left Japan, it is in private ownership. o

Worth noting that the hiragana for Hakuhō はくほう are used to compose the kanji. Most of the old timers probably already know, but just thought I'd leave it here in case anyone does a doubletake.

Chiyonokuni (Sanoyama) yesterday was at the Menard Art museum in Komaki, Aichi: his oni kesho mawashi is shown there, together with the original from the Momotaro oni drawings by Kazuyuki Takishita after the proverb "oni ni kanabo" - 桃太郎図 鬼に金棒, which is new on display https://museum.menard.co.jp/exhibition/index.html

They had intended to only put a photo of it next to the original, but Chiyonokuni let them have the real thing - till Dec.24th http://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/785187

My, that's a very sparse chon-mage Sanoyama-san's got now.

Are we having a poll on whether he'll go the Fujishima or Ajigawa route after his danpatsushiki?

Sanoyama on the 27th paid the artist a visit in his new studio in Misato town, Kumamoto - this was his last kesho mawashi. Takishita thinks about a collaboration for Chiyonokuni's danpatsushiki on June 8th, he met with the late Chiyonofuji on 2015 and since then has a strong connection to Kokonoe-beya, with his art on display at the heya. Chiyonokuni saw it there and thought it to be cute. o

For his juryo return in Osaka, Kitaharima appeared with the kesho mawashi he got for his 1 basho in makuuchi Nagoya 2016 from his koenkai Kitaharima-kai, with the calligraphy 百福是集 hyaku-fuku zeshuu by his late shisho Kitanoumi - the sign on the left, who had died November 2015. One favourite phrase of Kitanoumi, meaning "may much good fortune gather here". His goal for now: 10th return to juryo, extending his record.

Oshoma at the end of the basho used a keiba kesho mawashi which he got for juryo promotion, with the 2013 derby horse Kizuna (bonds, relation) - the name represents the bond between shisho and deshi and those with his family, heya members (he got it before the scandal) and supporters. The oyakata has connections to the North Hills farm in Hokkaido that breeds race horses and they donated the kesho mawashi. Kizuna is the father of many present race horses https://www.northhills.co.jp/en/?s=Kizuna

on day 13 - the Nihon Derby was on day 15, a bit PR from him as well - and like in a horse race he was trying a last spurt, then still joint in the lead

Oki has not yet decided what he will do, the reason for intai was the injury before Hatsu 23, that still plagues him. After the return, he had to use pain killers to fight on the dohyo and couldn't regain his strength. Another surgery with another 2 years blank was the option, he rather decided to retire: "It's meaningless when you can't aim for higher up"

The kesho mawashi made with the donations of 900 people from his village wasn't ready for the sekitori basho - he never used it. It shows the big snake from a local matsuri.

That he couldn't show it on the dohyo to the fans at home frustrates him, he wants to challenge at something new and give something back to the locals.

For once, Oki gave his kesho mawashi back to the locals in Sekikawa village, till end of November on display in the Sekikawa museum of local history https://www.sekikawamura.org/history-mansion
