Kesho mawashi no longer new

Ura showed his new 4th one at the jungyo. He got it from the Urashima shrine in Kyoto, short Ura shrine - Ura in Urashima 浦島 is different, but in the short form Ura 宇良 is the same as his shikona - it's a shrine for Urashima Taro.

うらのかむやしろ Uranokamuyashiro is written on the mawashi under the shrine's symbol, that's an old reading for Ura jinja, Ura shrine.

This kesho mawashi of Ura is now on display in the hall of the Mizunoesato Urashima park in Ine-town, near the Ura shrine. This Mr. Nakamura (81) was the donor - he played as a child at the Urashima shrine and last April moved to Ine from Osaka - he regularly donated money for shrine repairs.

The kesho mawashi is woven as Hakata-ori, and to represent the Urashima tale, it shows a tortoise shell in a dark blue sea. Nakamura wanted to do something to cheer for the comeback of Ura and at the end of the year asked him if he could borrow it for this exhibition. http://www.kyoto-np.co.jp/sightseeing/article/20180121000103

Hakuho will get a keshō-mawashi set from the Nishiarai-daishi temple, each at least 10 million Yen worth, with a design by Japanese painter Toshio Matsuo (87). The one for the yokozuna with the sun, for tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai with peony flowers like on the temple grounds.

Peonies are a specialty of the painter, for whom it is seen as the first keshō-mawashi design.

This set is now on display at an exhibition for the late Toshio Matsuo - and looks like the news about Hakuho's were incorrect: the painter was a friend of 44th yokozuna Tochinishiki, they were from the same generation, and was head of the Tamanoi-beya Tokyo koenkai since the active days of present Tamanoi-oyakata and also had designed a kesho mawashi for him as ozeki Tochiazuma - this kesho mawashi is also on display, and the paintings on which the designs are based.

Coach Harumafuji today donated a kesho-mawashi (and a tsuna) to the Yahiko shrine, where Isegahama-beya is having a training camp now. One from Japan New Alpha, a chain of pachinko parlors that also runs Rembrandt hotels, with his shikona and frame colors for an ozeki.  http://www.kenoh.com/2018/08/26_hounou.html

Ex-Saigo is busy doing PR for the Saitama jungyo, he is a promoter, and for that he has started a Saigo 彩豪ちゃんねるsumo channel on YouTube

Saigo shows one of his 2 old kesho-mawashi; from the Nakamura-beya koenkai, blue, with his shikona and a great kinboshi/gold star surrounded by 15 shiroboshi=wins - white stars - but the rare thing is that he shows also the back in full

I have long been looking for a description of the structural parts of the kesho-mawashi.  I wish I knew enough Japanese to follow his discussion. One question I have is, "Must the back side of the mawashi always be red?" The back sides (as opposed to the backsides) I have seen during the dohyo-iris have almost all been red.

The back part is mostly red and gold - what Saigo showed in full is visible in part on top when the kesho mawashi are on display

Ex-Kotomisen donated the kesho mawashi from his locals back to his hometown of Izumo. It shows the Izumo Dome in the Izumo plains.

The kesho mawashi and other items of Kotomisen are on display in the city hall of Izumo since Dec. 7th, planned to be for 1 year. http://www.city.izumo.shimane.jp/www/contents/1544767879501/index.html

I really hope a good video will appear later of the NHK news Shibu5ji special on kesho mawashi yesterday - so far only an awful framed and bad video and audio one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tPfUwlgkDcU&t=46m50s

Many unique kesho mawashi were presented, especially weird were 2 of Asahiyutaka: one with illumination he had to turn on for the dohyo-iri, one with a real bottle (hyotan) dangling in front

What I really would like to have in more detail is the panel of 21 high school and university standard kesho mawashi shown in the end

The news mentioned that autistic artist Kousuke Ohta's work "himawari" (sun flowers) had been used as the design for a kesho mawashi 3 years ago. Searching for that I found it on the site of the artist http://www.kousuke-ohta.com/picture

20190802_003.jpg

and the kesho mawashi mentioned in media coverage http://www.kousuke-ohta.com/media

20181015_img004.jpg

so it was Amuru, thus we haven't seen much of this kesho mawashi - looking for kesho mawashi for Amuru I found it on the (ex-)okamisan blog of Onomatsu-beya  http://ameblo.jp/oonomatsu/entry-12524600132.html - the blog should be closed by now

She mentioned that the kesho mawashi of the heya's sekitori have the design of works of people preferred by the oyakata

Onosho has one with a leopard by graphic designer Shin Matsunaga (only a German entry: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_Matsunaga) - even the wikipedia article of Onosho mentions this kesho mawashi https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/阿武咲奎也#エピソード

Onosho.2015.03.jpg

his NSK profile now has that with the Aomori nebuta designed by nebuta specialist Shunichi Kitamura

20130005.jpg

The one with the kanji 咲 sho of his shikona (saku - bloom) is from a calligraphy by the oyakata https://ameblo.jp/oonomatsu/entry-12524600927.html

o0480085414585646742.jpg?caw=800

Onosho also has a keiba kesho mawashi https://banei-keiba.or.jp/tp_detail.php?id=1631

with the horse Fujidai Victory フジダイビクトリー号

Daido's simply was from his senshu university, which has a very nice design  https://ameblo.jp/oonomatsu/entry-12524596728.html

On the 11th an "Kashiwado - Oiwato" exhibition started in the Kashiwado memorial hall in Tsuruoka, the hometown of the 2 (their original ones were swallowed). 2 kesho mawashi of Oiwato are on display, visible the one from his local koenkai that shows Mt.
