Gurowake 4,147 Posted September 25, 2014 A moderator asked me to create a new thread for the continuing coverage. Here's the Day 11 part 4 I didn't manage to get done yesterday:

Gurowake 4,147 Posted September 26, 2014 Nothing to do with actual matches, but this yobidashi, who calls out the matches near the end of Makushita, has a voice that really stands out. The guy after him is just as mediocre as all the guys before him.
Gurowake 4,147 Posted September 26, 2014 I didn't have enough time yesterday to go over recent recruits' results, but most of them fought Day 13 as well. Those finished for the basho looking strong: Abiko: 7-0, Ms Yusho. 27-1 overall. Born 7/91. Estimated rank next basho: Ms3 Shiba: 6-1, loses against a 5-1 at the top of Sandanme. 19-2 overall. Born 12/91. Estimated rank: Ms48 Shodai: 6-1, lost to Shiba earlier. 19-2 overall. Born 11/91. Estimated rank: Ms58 Takagi: 7-0, Sd Yusho. 19-2 overall. Born 3/92. Estimated rank: Ms30 Kotaro: 6-1, lost to Shiba earlier. 23-5 overall. Born 12/95. Estimated rank: Ms46 Mizuta: 5-2, only losses to guys who went 6-1. 22-6 overall. Born 2/96. Estimated rank: Ms60 Rough birthdates included to give a sense of where these guys were coming in. The top 4 are college prospects who did not manage to qualify for a MsTD (I don't know if any of them were eligible at one point but passed up the opportunity like Jokoryu), the bottom two that are not quite doing as well but still making Makushita for their 5th basho are coming out of high school. Ishii, on the other hand, did not look very good in the mawashi battles he lost the last 2 days. He's good at not overextending when pushing people out, but apparently isn't so great if people manage to get a grip. 5-2 for the basho and 11-3 overall. Estimated rank: Jd3 Nagao, Shuji, and Narumi are 4-2 and still have their last bout to go. They are not going to make Makushita next basho. Harada is 3-3 after starting 3-0. He had a bit of a weird college career in that he was significantly more successful in his first two years than in his last two.

Gurowake 4,147 Posted September 28, 2014 Please only watch this if you are interested in seeing what happens when they need to take a break due to a bout taking too long.
Taigiin khuu 42 Posted September 28, 2014 (edited) It seems Takatoshi called a hansoku on himself (fight starts at 0:44). That was super sporting, and it must be rare because the gyoji seemed a little confused. Can anybody give more insight into what happened there. And: Thank you Gurowake for the lower division bouts. I really appreciate that you stepped in to do this. Edited September 28, 2014 by Taigiin khuu
Lost ballet fan 29 Posted September 28, 2014 My thanks as well, this was (for me) the best lower division coverage ever. Especially having the top MS and Juryo fights in a Kinta-like format is incredibly useful. If you found a way to continue to do this it would be much appreciated. There are some real gems in the other divisions too - one of my all time favourites is the day 13 JD 77 Tochigenbu vs JD 80 Harada fight, about 6 minutes in on part 1, which just may be the funniest Sumo bout I've seen. Is there a way to at least pay something towards your subscription fees? I for one would be very happy to do so.
Gurowake 4,147 Posted September 28, 2014 (edited) Check this video for an email address to send Paypal payments to. I'm not sure how to go about making something people can click on to make payments as I haven't looked into free web hosting since Yahoo shut down Geocities and it's not a high priority. I hope anyone with internet access would have a way to making a Paypal payment directly to a provided email address; I got one such payment near the beginning of the tournament but really haven't checked lately. And while it is a junk email address, I'm still hiding it inside a video because I'd like to keep the amount of junk in it manageable and not have it in text on a website. You can send me a PM and I'll get back to you if you can't read the text or can't use Paypal. Edited September 28, 2014 by Gurowake

You’re absolutely right– he stopped fighting as he realized he commited a foul and walked backwards until he was out by himself.

Yeah, I noticed the pretty obvious hair-pull and wasn't surprised that the rikishi then quickly stepped out on his own easily. I also remember seeing someone give up after their hands flew close to the surface and he must have felt one touch the dirt; the gyoji couldn't tell and didn't stop the bout but the rikishi clearly knew he should have lost. The honor component of Japanese culture is very endearing to me.

Naganoyama 6,024 Posted September 30, 2014 Thanks for all your work which has been greatly appreciated. I wonder whether it would be possible to ask you (if you are planning to do this again) to place your text against a background colour, to make sure it always stands out?
